Katherine Low Settlement is a busy, local charity that has been serving Battersea and the wider Wandsworth community since 1924. We are dedicated to building stronger communities and enable people to challenge and find ways out of poverty and isolation.

We run a range of our own community services to support local older people and children, young people, and their families from refugee communities. We campaign for social change. We incubate and support other charities and social businesses to thrive. Each week we work with 30+ charities and community groups supporting more than 1,000 people.

We’re looking for a dynamic and strategic Operations Director to play a key role in shaping and supporting everything we do at Katherine Low Settlement. Sitting at the heart of our leadership team, this role is all about making sure our charity runs smoothly, sustainably, and with purpose — so we can keep making a difference in the lives of those who need us most.

Role Purpose

The Operations Director is a critical leadership role responsible for ensuring the efficient and effective running of all operational aspects of Katherine Low Settlement. This role oversees the day-to-day operational leadership of the charity, ensuring that its systems, processes, and teams are aligned with strategic objectives and compliant with relevant legislation.

This position will lead on programme delivery, financial management, human resources, IT infrastructure, risk and compliance, governance, and facilities management, ensuring that the organisation operates smoothly and sustainably. The post-holder will act as the Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL), embedding a strong safeguarding culture across the organisation, and also be responsible for policy development and culture and wellbeing. 

As a key member of the senior leadership team, the Director of Operations will work closely with the CEO, Board of Trustees, funders, partners, and staff to drive organisational effectiveness and ensure that the charity can continue delivering high-impact work.

Key Responsibilities

Operational Leadership & Organisational Strategy

• Provide strategic leadership for all operational functions, ensuring alignment with the organisation’s mission and strategic objectives.
• Develop and implement efficient systems, processes, and policies to improve operational effectiveness.
• Work closely with the CEO and Board of Trustees to ensure that the charity is resilient, agile, and positioned for sustainable growth.
• Oversee cross-departmental collaboration, ensuring that operations support and enhance programme delivery.

• Ensure all programmes and services are effectively designed, resourced, and evaluated to achieve the best outcomes.

Financial & Resource Management

• Oversee financial planning, budgeting, and management in partnership with the Finance Team and CEO.
• Ensure financial policies, processes, and controls are in place and adhered to.
• Work with the fundraising team to ensure grant and contract funding is effectively managed and reported.
• Ensure long-term financial sustainability through effective resource allocation and cost efficiency.
• Support the development of business models, funding strategies, and income diversification.

Safeguarding & Risk Management - Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL)

• As the Designated Safeguarding Lead (a role delegated by the Chief Executive), ensure robust safeguarding policies, procedures, and practices are in place.
• Provide training and guidance to staff on safeguarding responsibilities and best practices.
• Oversee the Deputy Safeguarding Leads, acting as the main point of contact for safeguarding concerns from them, ensuring they are appropriately reported and addressed.
• Embed a strong safeguarding culture, ensuring that all programmes and services prioritise the safety and wellbeing of beneficiaries.

Human Resources, People Management & Wellbeing

• Lead the HR function, ensuring best practices in recruitment, retention, staff development, and performance management.
• Champion diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), embedding a culture of fairness and opportunity for all.
• Develop and implement HR policies and procedures, ensuring compliance with employment law and best practice.
• Promote staff wellbeing, fostering a positive and supportive working environment.

IT Infrastructure, Systems & Data Management

Essential Experience & Skills

• Proven experience in a senior operational leadership role, ideally within the charity or non-profit sector.
• Strong understanding of programme management, financial oversight, HR, IT, and governance.
• Demonstrable experience of managing budgets using complex Excel spreadsheets.
• Experience with Salesforce or another complex CRM system, including implementation, reporting, and data management.

SANE is a UK-wide mental health charity working to improve the quality of life of anyone affected by mental illness. It aims to raise awareness and understanding of all mental health conditions; fight to improve frontline mental health services for individuals and carers; provide support, information and guidance through SANEline, our Call Back service, email and text support; and promote and host research into causes, treatments and therapies through its Prince of Wales International Centre for SANE research.

About the role:

We are seeking a dedicated Wellbeing and Training Officer to support the wellbeing and development of our SANEline volunteers. This role is pivotal in ensuring that our volunteers feel valued and supported to provide a high standard of emotional support to our callers.

Working closely with the Training and Volunteer Manager, you will help ensure that all volunteers receive timely, appropriate and emphatic support. You will also play role in delivering welfare support, planning and delivering training sessions and promoting volunteer engagement and retention.

This position offers an exciting opportunity to provide valuable, hands-on experience in delivering wellbeing support and training for volunteers who provide emotional support to vulnerable callers.

Salary: £27,000 -29,000 pro rata, depending on experience

- You must have proven experience of providing emotional support, counselling or therapy to adults.

- You must have proven experience of designing and delivering training in a professional setting.

- You are a warm and confident communicator with the ability to build trust and rapport with people from diverse backgrounds.

About the role

With demand for our services growing, we are seeking a Trusts and Foundations Manager to help power our mission through strategic, long-term funding partnerships. The Policy and Public Affairs Manager will monitor and map the criminal justice policy landscape, tracking developments across the system. They will engage with MPs, civil servants and key stakeholders, bringing evidence from our membership and the voices of those impacted directly by the criminal justice system to government to influence change.

The postholder will have excellent written and verbal communication skills and have demonstrated evidence of impact in policy and public affairs. Main responsibilities

Public Affairs (50% time)

• Develop and implement the CJA’s public affairs and influencing strategy to advance the CJA's objectives.
• Work with CJA members on influencing specific legislation, including campaigning around bills, writing amendments, and working with MPs and Peers to promote them within the legislative process.

Context and purpose of the role

You will join a small, high-performing team responsible for generating £5 million per year from individual giving, legacies, grants and corporate partners, all to deliver the Ramblers ambition for a future where everyone can enjoy the benefits of walking in nature.

Working closely with the Product & Innovation Manager, you will play a key role in delivering the fundraising strategy, leading on the delivery of our individual giving and legacy marketing campaigns across a range of channels. You will create high-quality, compelling campaign materials and ensure an excellent donor experience.

Key Responsibilities:

Income generation

• Play a key role in the implementation and delivery of the individual giving and legacy marketing strategy
• Support the growth of individual giving income in line with annual targets
• Develop and deliver regular cash and legacy marketing appeals to a high level, including:
  • Developing propositions and cases for support
  • Create compelling direct marketing materials, including writing persuasive copy and developing strong creative content
  • Project management to ensure delivery on schedule and within budget
  • Managing relationships with agencies and suppliers including design and print
• Manage a portfolio of affiliate fundraising campaigns

Donor stewardship

• Ensure the Customer Relationship Management (CRM) system is used effectively to facilitate accurate supporter stewardship and reporting
• Effectively manage communications with supporters, including ensuring that donations are thanked appropriately, managing fundraising inboxes, and responding to queries
• Working with the Production & Innovation Manager, identify a pipeline of potential mid- and high-value donors for stewardship and conversion

Data and reporting

• Produce campaign and programme level reporting and analysis
• Work closely with the data team to ensure selections are accurate, timely and relevant to our various audiences, and use income data to make recommendations for future campaigns
• Maintain accurate, up to date and compliant records of individual giving campaigns and appeals
• Provide regular financial reports and reforecasts to the Product & Innovation Manager and Head of Fundraising

Relationships

• Build strong working relationships with staff within various functions of the Ramblers
• Work with other members of the Fundraising, Communications and Supporter Care teams to ensure that all supporter communications are part of an integrated supporter journey

The Person

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

Essential:

• Experience working within a target-driven fundraising or direct marketing team, ideally within an individual giving context
• Experience of managing fundraising or marketing projects across a range of channels, such as direct mail, social media and email
• Experience of data-driven marketing campaigns, including segmentation and campaign analysis to meet objectives
• Excellent communication skills, with the ability to tailor communications to a wide range of audiences
• Excellent creative skills, including the ability to write compelling, accurate and persuasive copy across a range of channels
• Competent in the use of IT tools including Word, Excel and PowerPoint
