The Senior Research Manager for Research Management and Impact is responsible for the allocation and management of all external Marie Curie research awards and for supporting and evidencing their impact on policy and practice. The Research Management Team at Marie Curie oversees and manages Marie Curie's external research investment from setting the strategic direction and research priorities, allocating and monitoring research projects and programmes, to establishing and publicising their impact. Our research priorities are informed by the views of patients, carers and health and social care professionals and we strive to ensure that research findings inform policy and practice to improve end of life experience.

This is a key post in the Research Management Team that is responsible for the allocation and management of research grants such as project grants awarded as part of the Marie Curie Research Grants Scheme, our Research Impact Fund, commissioned research, and reviews of our Marie Curie Research Centres. This includes monitoring grants through the review of annual and final reports, statements of expenditure and Researchfish submissions as well as developing relationships with the research teams to ensure that the next steps of research, notably the impact on policy and practice, is considered from the start of the project or programme.

This is an exciting opportunity to join the Royal College of Physicians at a crucial time. The RCP is the oldest medical royal college representing doctors in over 30 specialties from cardiology and gastroenterology to geriatric and respiratory medicine.

The senior public affairs and policy manager will help us to understand the key policy issues in health and healthcare and lead our influencing work, developing the RCP’s networks, particularly in parliament and government.

You will help manage and oversee a portfolio of high-profile work across a range of topics, proactively identifying opportunities for the RCP to influence the agenda and working with RCP fellows and members to shape and progress our campaigns. You will lead and manage our public affairs work, contributing your expertise to design and lead influencing strategies, campaign planning and policy development for a range of issues.

You will have demonstrable experience of developing and delivering successful influencing strategies, using a range of parliamentary influencing tactics to achieve policy change. You will be as comfortable speaking to parliamentarians and briefing senior leaders for meetings as you are writing consultation responses and policy briefings. You will be able to engage with the policy detail, while appreciating the bigger political picture and our place in it.

You will lead and manage the organisation’s stakeholder engagement to uphold our position as a leading health and care organisation. Central to that will be maintaining a network of contacts across the sector, in parliament, including political advisers, and the civil service. You will work with the president and senior officers to develop policy positions and advocate for them to external stakeholders within UK Government, Parliament and the wider health and care sector.

Supporter Engagement and Stewardship

1. Establish systems, procedures, proactive stewardship, and an engagement programme to provide the highest levels of service to Pecan’s supporters.

2. To be responsible for thanking all supporters and managing a supporter engagement journey – ensuring that effective processes are in place and driving levels of satisfaction and loyalty.

3. Act as the ‘first point of call’ for all supporters and managing complaints and issues, ensuring they are reported centrally within agreed procedures, that they are resolved or escalated as necessary and maintaining excellent communication with supporters throughout these processes.

4. Develop and implement stewardship programmes including reactivation of lapsed donors.

Database Management

1. Assist with setting up our CRM database with responsibility of developing and maintaining the database, ensuring efficient, appropriate data capture and analysis for the purpose of effective stewardship, fundraising and communications.

2. Maintain data management standards, assisting with the implementation of processes and policies ensuring best practice is followed.

3. Train other staff members to be able to use the database sufficiently.

4. Ensure all records, fundraising data and fundraising administration is kept up to date and all information is GDPR-compliant.

5. Reconcile fundraising income with the Finance Manager, including Gift Aid claims, missed, failed payments and Direct Debit cancellations.

Individual Giving

1. Develop an Individual Giving and Acquisition strategy that drives growth for individual giving across multi-channel campaigns and initiatives.

2. Lead all individual giving streams such as direct mail appeals, online donations, regular campaigns and appeals to maximise income generation.

3. Work with the Marketing Manager on fundraising communication and to ensure donors are kept up to date on the difference their support makes.

4. Develop campaigns and messaging that engages new segments and audiences.

Church Giving

1. Inspire churches to journey with us as we transform lives in Peckham.

2. Pioneer and develop a broad range of relationships with churches, organisations, and denominations across Southwark.

3. Work strategically with denominations to inspire partnership and engagement with Pecan across their networks and congregations.

4. Build a team of speakers who will host and speak at meetings with churches and Christian networks in Southwark.

5. Be willing to represent Pecan at external events, including Christian exhibitions and festivals, church talks etc…

6. Increase income from churches.

Fundraising Appeals and Campaigns

1. Work alongside teams and Partnerships Manager to project manage fundraising appeals and campaigns including Pecan at 35yrs; Christmas Campaigns etc.

2. Overall responsibility for Big Give Campaigns.

3. Oversight of Enthuse campaign pages.

4. Establish a corporate fundraising strategy with an accompanying narrative, alongside the Partnerships Manager, to explain the work of Pecan to potential company supporters.

5. Tailor campaigns and appeals for different audiences and supporters alongside Partnerships Manager to target corporates; smaller local businesses; individuals and churches.

Staff and Volunteers

1. Support with recruiting fundraising volunteers as appropiate.

2. Management of a part time Partnerships Manager with responsibility.

3. Work closely with Head of Services and Head of Food Services to ensure all fundraising is coordinated.

Wider organisational responsibilities

· Attend Pecan team meetings as and when required, including meetings where there may be a time of prayer and reflection.

· Read and adhere to all policies and procedures.

· Lead on applications to charitable trusts or statutory bodies with support from the Head of Services.

· Undertake responsibilities associated with being a member of the Pecan team.

· Perform all the duties required by the post in line with Pecan’s ethos and values statement, its commitment to a policy of equal opportunity and its aim of serving the community in a caring and practical manner.

This role will develop existing relationships with high-net-worth donors, as well as developing a broader major donor product offering including a patron’s programme and harnessing the potential of the hospital’s clinical networks. Key duties include:

• Developing relationships with new and existing High Net Worth Individuals to understand their motivations and desires to advance care for heart and lung patients.
• Account managing existing major donor relationships, giving at a 4-6 figure level.

​Main purpose of the post 

We are seeking to appoint a Business Development Coordinator to join a wider team that spearheads RUSI’s research fundraising efforts. Reporting to the Director, Research Business Development, the successful candidate will enhance the institute’s business development activities by providing administrative and coordination support for business development, contracts, and risk management. Working closely with research groups, central services teams, and the senior management team, the successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring that RUSI is well-placed to spot and respond to new funding opportunities and that our contracts are high-quality and executed efficiently. 

This is a highly collaborative role that involves building very strong internal relationships at all levels of the organisation and managing competing priorities and deadlines. We are seeking a team player with a pragmatic and positive attitude and excellent attention to detail, who will enjoy taking on new challenges, using your initiative to solve problems, and seeing your work directly contribute to meeting our short- and long-term goals.

​Key tasks 

Tracking, identifying, and sharing new funding opportunities:  

• Conduct research to identify potential funders and grant opportunities, populate and maintain a prospects tracker. Ensure we have an accurate and current map of relevant funders at all times to draw from.

• Manage the Business Development email inbox, ensuring we are registered to all relevant portals and that we are regularly checking funder portals that do not send notifications. Share summaries of relevant opportunities with the BD Director along with suggested dissemination plan, agree next steps and follow up with appropriate Research Groups.

• Support research colleagues to identify funders to invite to RUSI events and draft outreach emails.

Providing administrative and coordination support on bids, contracts, and new business activities: 

• Assist the Bids Manager with compiling information about RUSI as an organisation, its registrations, policies, organisational structure, banking and insurance details, financial information, and other generic details to be included in bid submissions and for due diligence. 

• Support the Bids Manager/Director of Research Business Development with administration and coordination of specific components on large bids.

Maintaining and improving business development processes and systems: 

• Ensure the business development team trackers (action log, new funding opportunities etc.) are accurate and up to date. 

• Work closely with RUSI’s Legal and Contracts and Finance teams to finalise funder contracts and ensure that final copies are saved centrally, and key information is distributed to relevant teams. Ensure that relevant and accurate funder information is tracked by the finance system for ongoing analysis. 

• Review drafts of subcontractor agreements and work closely with RUSI’s Legal and Contracts team to manage the process for preparing, securing approval, finalising, and sharing sub-contracts. 

• Act as central point of contact for the research funding pipeline, ensure it is functioning as needed and respond to ad hoc questions.

• Manage the team’s Sharepoint page, ensuring that it is useful and relevant for research colleagues, with high-quality templates and guidance.

• In coordination with colleagues on the Communications team, update RUSI’s customer relationship management (CRM) system with accurate, relevant and up-to-date funder information and develop and promote best practice for CRM usage for BD.

• Update RUSI funders on the website annually, ensuring that they are accurate and that we have appropriate permissions to acknowledge them publicly.

• Assist in preparing training materials and internal presentations, including by conducting data analysis. 

• Schedule regular catch ups with research groups, take and share notes in appropriate formats, update trackers. 

• Take accurate and useful minutes and share and follow up on action points after Business Development meetings.

• Establish strong working relationships with research teams, central service teams, and senior management.

• Assist with administrative tasks for the business development team as needed, including setting up tech (Zoom/Teams) meetings, coordinating diaries, and booking meetings.

Managing the institutional Risk Management process:  

• Be responsible for ensuring that risk registers are maintained and updated across the Institute to track risk within the organisation.

• Attend all Audit & Risk Committee meetings to update members on changes to the risk register, and take minutes for each meeting. 

• Work with the COO and Business Development team to ensure that RUSI has in place all policies and procedures across the Institute that are required by funders on various projects. 

• Assist the COO in keeping up to date with all Charity Commission guidance on charity operations and compliance.

​Essential Skills and Experience:  

• Professional experience in charity administration, business development, customer service, events management, account management or similar.

• Previous experience in grants administration or project management. 

• Basic knowledge and awareness of common requirements for bid submissions including such items as statements on duty of care, quality assurance, supply chain management, gender, and diversity, equity, and inclusion. 

• Experience in contract administration and completion. 

• An undergraduate degree or equivalent in business, international relations, or related field.

• Team Player – a genuine enthusiasm to help others, collaborate across multiple teams, and to see your work contribute to the benefit of the organisation. 

• Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work with different personalities and manage confidential information with sensitivity. 

• Strong written and verbal communication skills, able to communicate clearly and professionally on video calls, Teams chat, email and in person. Able to produce clear, accurate and insightful written output, meeting the highest quality standards. 

• Excellent organisation and attention to detail – you can maintain, implement, and improve systems, processes, and databases to ensure that our data and outputs are accurate, thorough and up to date.

• Strong IT and Microsoft skills (Excel, Word, Outlook, Adobe and PowerPoint)
