Job description

We are seeking a freelance Digital Engagement professional to help us grow our public profile and creatively engage with our audiences in order to build our global supporter base, increase engagement and participation with our work.

Our plan is to grow our supporter base by reaching new audiences and engaging people both in the UK and our overseas visitors. Engaging communications (across all media), a vibrant events programme and a strong narrative on the significance of Antarctica will be key in developing our audiences. It is our ambition that we build enduring relationships with a growing membership so that they inspired to pursue a lifelong interest in the last wilderness on Earth.

2020 is going to be an exciting year for UKAHT as we embark on a major programme to mark the bicentenary of the discovery of Antarctica. This is why we are looking for a Digital Engagement freelancer to join our dynamic team to develop and optimise our digital communications, ensuring the online experience serves and supports our audiences and meets our programme, fundraising and marketing goals.

You will support our small but dynamic team in Cambridge taking responsibility for all of our digital output – website, social media and other projects, to bring to life the extraordinary stories of human endeavour in Antarctica for a global audience in this landmark year.

The role is freelance and flexible with regards to location, but there will be the occasional requirement to work with the team in Cambridge.

Job Title: Digital Engagement Officer

Reporting to: Chief Executive

Location: The post can be home-based but there will be need to visit UKAHT’s office in Cambridge

Fee: £24,000 fixed annual fee

Expenses: All reasonable travel costs incurred as part of the role will be reimbursed as per UKAHT policy

Job Role: To develop and implement a compelling digital, web and social media strategy that increases the quantity and quality of our digital engagement, communications and fundraising and helps us convert online audiences into financial supporters.

To improve the effectiveness of our digital communications output, through careful evaluation and analysis using analytics tools and techniques

To support teams across the organisation with their digital communications, providing training and advice on a range of digital communications platforms



  • To guide and support the renewal of our website, to grow support (including membership recruitment and retention) and income through online giving and the online shop. Ensure the online experience meets the requirements of key audiences and external stakeholders, to increase audience volumes, engagement and loyalty.
  • To undertake the day to day management of the website ensuring that it is engaging, fresh, high quality and up to date.
  • To liaise with our PR agency to proactively develop the website so that it is innovative and constantly improving.

Social Media:

  • Manage the development of digital assets and campaign planning, including the production or commissioning of rich media content to support the delivery of our communications campaigns and promotions on the website and on social media.
  • To use a range of social media tools to reach our diverse audiences and engage them with our work so that they increase in number and increase their support of the Trust.
  • To work with our PR & Marketing agency to develop a social media plan supporting our public programme.
  • To identify and stay abreast of emerging technologies and monitor competitor/industry activity, implementing changes when appropriate

Additional Duties:

  • To lead on the development, implementation and maintenance of an image library for the Trust and to carry out other internal communications tasks and initiatives as required.
  • To explore digital initiatives to engage more people with our remote heritage, including new media, virtual reality and digitisation.
  • Develop, schedule and deliver our programme of email communications and marketing by managing the organisation’s mailing calendar and enhancing our email communications and marketing
  • Proactively support colleagues from across the organisation in adopting digital channels and
  • To present a positive and welcoming image of the Trust to everyone
  • To be willing to work flexibly as the role requires – including occasional evenings and weekends

What are we looking for?

  • A talented and creative individual and avid social media user
  • Demonstrable success in delivering social media campaigns and creating exciting content
  • Outgoing, open minded and creative mind when approaching projects
  • A highly organised forward planner
  • A keen eye for new developments and trends in digital media
  • Good knowledge and experience of managing social media communities (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube).
  • Working knowledge of edit and graphics manipulation packages
  • Some experience of filming for social platforms
  • Creative storytelling ability and excellent writing standards.
