We are looking for a warm and dynamic Clinical Director to lead our team of dedicated therapists as we work to reach more women in need of our support across London. With a strong track record in delivering trauma-informed mental health services, the ability to support and manage a diverse team working part-time, and a keen eye for detailed clinical monitoring and reporting, you will work closely with the CEO and Trustees to develop our services with a focus on creative and inclusive women-centred support.
The Maya Centre is a unique women-only charity based in Islington, offering free specialist psychotherapy and holistic support to women on low incomes, whose mental health and wellbeing have been affected by experiences ranging from deprivation and isolation to racism, exploitation and Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG). 65% of our clients come from Black, Ethnic Minority and Refugee backgrounds and we adopt specifically intercultural and intersectional approaches in supporting them towards greater voice, choice and control in their lives. Offered in over 13 languages, our trauma-informed services are BACP accredited and include:

- Strategic & operational clinical leadership within a small organisation, department or unit.
- Experience of managing assessment, intake and allocation of clients with mental health issues.

We mobilise our knowledge and expertise, in partnership with civil society globally, to address cutting-edge contemporary issues – including the weaponization of counter terrorism measures to close democratic and civil space, the use of emergency and securitized measures in response to the global health pandemic and other non-terrorism related threats, the impact of national security measures on children and vulnerable adults, including those held in IS-associated detention camps in Northeast Syria, the unlawful use of lethal force in the context of counterterrorism, and the proliferation of non-criminal counter terrorism measures.
RSI carries out its work through innovative and high-quality research, strategic litigation, collective action with trusted partners, and advocacy at the domestic, regional and international levels. Through its work, RSI has become a critical reference point and central hub of expertise and action on issues of national security and human rights. Our work has brought about important systemic reforms and justice for individuals, and consistently informs the work of the UN, governments and other influential stakeholders.
We have received wide acclaim for our work including receiving the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) Human Rights Prize for ‘outstanding civil society action in the defence of human rights in Europe’, the Irish World Damien Gaffney Award, and the Beacon Prize for Human Rights and were shortlisted for the Columbia University Global Freedom of Expression Award for Best Legal Services 2018.
The work of RSI is becoming increasing relevant given the stark rise globally in national security measures that silence dissidents, disproportionately impact and/or target vulnerable and marginalised communities, or otherwise close civic and democratic space. In parallel, the obstacles for victims to access justice have significantly increased as governments hide behind the well-worn cloak of national security and at the same time are systematically dismantling vital legal protections and other safeguards.
As the Legal and Advocacy Director, you will help lead the organization and make an impact worldwide as we increase our work with international partners and implement our exciting and innovative new strategies.
This position reports to the Executive Director. It may entail personnel management responsibilities.
Person Specification:
- RSI is looking for a passionate and experienced human rights professional who:
- Has a post-graduate qualification in law, preferably including coursework in several areas of international law.
- Has a minimum of 5-7 years of experience in human rights, preferably including at least some experience with issues of national security.
- Has experience managing individuals or small teams.
- Is highly self-motivated, creative, open-minded, and a strategic thinker.
- Has a proven track record of promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion.
- Has advanced skills in strategic litigation, legislative advocacy, UN advocacy, or grassroots activism, including the development of detailed strategic plans.
- Has experience building coalitions, ideally internationally.
- Has a demonstrable record of completing successful, complex projects in a timely manner.
- Has a strong commitment to working in a collegial and respectful manner with colleagues as well as a broader range of partners and stakeholders.
- Ideally, has expertise in gender rights.
- We are especially – but not exclusively – interested in receiving applications from candidates with expertise in the law or political context of Northern Ireland, and with an ability to conduct research and advocacy related to that context.
- You must speak and write English fluently, and fluency in other languages is a plus.
- You must have a right to work in the United Kingdom.
Responsibilities:
- Work with the Executive Director to create and implement strategic plans for specific projects as well as the organization as a whole.
- Draft and review expert legal materials on matters of international law such as international and regional human rights law, international humanitarian law, and international refugee and asylum law.
- Draft and review expert legal materials on issues of UK law.
- Develop and implement law reform and litigation strategies.
- Create and lead efforts to inform and shape public opinion, such as by drafting opinion pieces and calls to action.
- Build and strengthen an international coalition of civil society organizations and academic experts addressing national security issues from a human rights perspective.
- Build effective and lasting relationships with other key stakeholders.
- Potentially, manage a small team of law and policy specialists.
- Be a strategic leader and thinker in the field of national security and human rights.

About you

To perform the role successfully a creative and entrepreneurial approach will be required. This newly designed role will give you the flexibility to make the role your own and develop alongside the business; working collaboratively with the team to produce a broad portfolio of relationships and investments within the housing and social sector.
