Substance Misuse Practitioner (Mid area)

Permanent contract but funding for this role ends on 31st March 2030 (with the potential for extension for a further 2 years)

The Children's Society has been helping children and young people in this country for over 140 years. We run local services that support young people when they are at their most vulnerable and in desperate need of help. We're there for young people, every step of the way. 

This role sits within our children and families directorate, which works to provide immediate one-to-one and group support for young people who urgently need support. Your role will be to help us maintain and develop innovative practice to support our work in our services within the Essex area. 

We wish to recruit a Substance Misuse Practitioner to join the established All Age Recovery Co-ordination Service (AARCS), which we deliver in partnership with Open Road, supporting young people, adults and families affected by substance misuse.

You will undertake individual assessments and risk assessment with young people up to the age of 25, developing a person-centred care plan specific to that young person and their needs and supporting them through their recovery journey with the service. This will be delivered through a range of tailored interventions, in both a one to one and/or targeted group work capacity.

-You will have substantial experience in working with vulnerable young people either in a paid or unpaid capacity.

-You will have experience of carrying out individual and group work interventions with young people & adults.

-You will have experience in using Microsoft Office Applications and other relevant data systems.

-You can demonstrate the ability to work on your own initiative as well as part of a multi-disciplinary team.

Right now, one of our partners, Aquarius Action Projects, is looking for a Practitioner to join their Family Support service in Derby. Living with someone who has a drug or alcohol problem can be worrying and stressful and the service runs a young person’s programme called Choices for young people aged 5-18 years who are affected by a family members alcohol or drug use. The service provides young people with a safe place for them to talk about their concerns and help them to develop coping strategies to manage difficult situations.

The Role

As a Practitioner, you will deliver 1:1 and group interventions to young people in both community and school settings around a variety of topics. These will include confidence and self-esteem, hobbies, school (attending and enjoying), age appropriate drug & alcohol knowledge, how parental substance misuse can make young people feel, planning for their futures and positive peer and adult support.

Skills and Qualifications

An energetic and confident self-starter, you have a qualification in health/social care, youth and community work (e.g. NVQ Level 3 or above, DipSW, Mental Health Nursing, Counselling, Addiction Studies). Alternatively, we’ll consider candidates with experience of working in the substance misuse field with a commitment to complete NVQ Level 3 Health and Social Care. As well as good knowledge of alcohol/drug and health related issues, you're used to liaising with voluntary and statutory agencies and health professionals and comfortable engaging with clients in a variety of service delivery settings. What’s more, you have a flexible approach, a commitment to the principles of confidentiality and excellent record keeping and Microsoft Office.

Aquarius is a charity that helps people and communities overcome the harm caused by alcohol, drugs and gambling. We are part of ‘One Recovery Buckinghamshire’ (ORB), a partnership between Inclusion (MPFT NHS Trust), Aquarius, and Build on Belief providing support for alcohol and drug issues across Buckinghamshire.

The purpose of the role is to engage people in a variety of interventions, using a person centred approach, empowering them to reduce risk, increase resilience and achieve positive outcomes.

All Complex Needs Practitioners (Recovery Worker) work flexibly across the community and within our multi-agency partnership settings. The caseload will include a mixture of community and multi-agency referral pathways including health and social care. You will join our caring multi-disciplinary teams, to help empower you to provide quality psychosocial interventions to our diverse client groups. 

A core part of the role will be working with people to address holistic support needs across all aspects of the person’s substance use and wellbeing. This could include diverse work related to physical and emotional health, meaningful use of time, family and relationships, community engagement and activities, accommodation, physical and emotional health, offending as well as substance use (drug use and / or alcohol use).

Skills and Qualifications

Liaison and Diversion Service Manager

Location: Spennymoor, County Durham

Salary: £30,280 - £43,570 per annum

The Role

We are looking for a Service Manager for our Liaison and Diversion Service. Covering both Durham and Cleveland Constabulary areas, the service works collaboratively with Liaison & Diversion mental and physical health practitioners, and other partners, to act as a point of referral and offer assertive follow-up for men, women, and young people identified as vulnerable on arrest.

This covers a range of factors including their physical or mental health, because they use drugs and alcohol or because they are homeless. The aim of the service is to ensure they are supported to engage with a range of community and support agencies to meet their needs and reduce their contact with the criminal justice system. 

The role has additional responsibilities for the Cleveland Dependency and Recovery, and Durham Footsteps, services that support people on Probation. You will use your excellent management and partnership skills to oversee these key community Criminal Justice Services, manage staff, and develop and deliver high quality services for the people we support.

The salary advertised above demonstrates the full earning potential for this role, starting salaries will allow for pay progression within the pay band.
