We're looking for an ambitious and influential Manager, Physics Workforce on a full-time, permanent basis, to lead research, insight and engagement that helps our stakeholders better appreciate and understand the value of physics skills, the workforce challenges facing physics-powered sectors, and identify solutions that make a lasting difference.
Physics for our future. From clean energy and advanced manufacturing to healthcare, defence, digital technologies and emerging industries, physics skills are critical to economic growth, innovation and solving global challenges. Yet, at the same time, the contribution of physics skills remains poorly understood and often invisible in national workforce conversations. The Institute of Physics is determined to change that.
Why this role matters. Our vision is a world where physics transforms lives, creates opportunity and helps tackle society's biggest challenges. The Manager, Physics Workforce will play a central role in building evidence and supporting the translation of insight into action.
This is an exciting opportunity to shape national conversations. You'll uncover evidence that informs decision-making, develop thought leadership that challenges assumptions, and support the building of partnerships that drive positive change across industry, education and government.
What will I be doing? As Manager, Physics Workforce, you'll help position the IOP as a trusted authority on workforce and physics skills issues. You will:
- Lead high-profile workforce and skills research programmes across the UK and Ireland.
- Develop compelling evidence and insight that supports change and informs decision-making.
- Translate complex evidence into clear, persuasive narratives that inspire action.
- Produce influential reports, briefings and thought leadership.
- Identify emerging workforce trends and opportunities.
- Contribute to skills and workforce activity across our strategic priorities of Skills, Science and Society.
In doing the above you'll help:
- Raise awareness of the economic value of physics skills.
- Influence workforce and skills policy and investment at national and regional levels.
- Support physics-powered sectors to thrive.
- Raise the visibility of pathways into physics-powered careers.
- Ensure evidence drives action across the physics skills ecosystem.
- Help create a stronger, more diverse and more future-ready workforce.
Who will I work with? You'll engage with a diverse network of influential stakeholders, including industry leaders and employers; sector bodies and workforce experts; policymakers and strategic influencers; members of our physics community, and colleagues across the IOP.
This is a role for a strategic thinker, someone who enjoys collaboration and working across organisational and sector boundaries.
About you. You're naturally curious, motivated by impact and comfortable navigating complex challenges. You know how to turn evidence into influence and insight into action.
You may already be working in:
- Workforce development, skills/STEM policy or public affairs, or labour market research and analysis.
Most importantly, you'll bring:
- Exceptional research and analytical capability, with the ability to create compelling narratives from data and evidence.
- Domain knowledge and understanding of the complexities of the skills ecosystem.
- Strong project and programme leadership experience.
- Excellent stakeholder engagement and influencing skills.
- A track record of delivering work that informs decisions and drives change.
Why join the Institute of Physics, the professional body and learned society for physics in the UK and Ireland? The IOP is a friendly, inclusive and ambitious organisation, where diversity and inclusion are central to how we work. We focus on supporting our people to thrive, offering competitive pay, great development opportunities and a generous benefits package.
Some of our benefits include:
- An excellent pension scheme
- Private medical insurance, life assurance, dental insurance and a healthcare cash plan
- Eye care vouchers, annual flu vaccinations, long service awards and access to an employee assistance programme
- 25 days’ annual leave as a standard, rising to a maximum of 30 days with continued service, in addition to floating bank holidays (that can be taken flexibly)
- Exceptionally flexible working opportunities (see below for more details)
Our current strategy, Physics for our future, is built around three priorities: Skills. Science. Society. Everything we do is focused on creating positive impact through those priorities. As a core part of our Workforce and HE team, you will have an opportunity to make a tangible contribution to all three.
If you're excited by the idea of combining research, influence, stakeholder insight and thought leadership to tackle some of the most important workforce challenges facing physics-powered sectors, we'd love to hear from you!
How to apply. Alongside your CV, please include a cover letter explaining how you meet the person specification. Where possible, please give examples of thought leadership you have developed and the impact it had.
We’re committed to creating a welcoming and inclusive culture for everyone. If you need any reasonable adjustments during the application or recruitment process, please let us know as we’re always happy to help.
Please note whilst we are unable to offer visa sponsorship for this role, we warmly encourage applications from candidates who already have the right to work in the UK and Ireland.
How will I be working? We operate a flexible, trust based working model that gives colleagues autonomy over how, when and where they work, while recognising the value of in person collaboration. You will be assigned a base office, with hybrid working offered as standard.
You will engage in regular in person collaboration with your team (as operationally appropriate), as well as with colleagues across the wider organisation, to ensure effective operational alignment and to support our inclusive approach to working.
As an organisation we also meet in person once a quarter at our Head Office in the Kings Cross area of London.

Could you turn bold ideas into campaigns that inspire people to give, volunteer and take action?
Mercy Ships UK is entering an ambitious period of growth and we’re looking for an exceptional Head of Marketing to help turn that ambition into impact.
This is an exciting opportunity to support the operational engine room of marketing at Mercy Ships UK, ensuring our fundraising, volunteering and brand priorities are transformed into compelling, integrated campaigns that reach the right audiences and deliver measurable results.
Mercy Ships operates hospital ships that bring free, life-changing surgical care and medical training to people who otherwise have little or no access to safe healthcare. Behind that extraordinary mission sits an equally important challenge: engaging more supporters, growing income, recruiting more volunteers and helping more people discover the work of Mercy Ships.
That’s where you come in.
Reporting to the Director of Communications and Engagement, you’ll lead a multidisciplinary marketing delivery team spanning creative, content, digital and project coordination. You’ll bring together people, ideas, channels and priorities to make sure great strategies become brilliantly executed campaigns.
You’ll oversee the campaign journey from brief to launch and evaluation, shaping creative ideas, coordinating digital and offline activity, improving workflows, managing resources and using insight and performance data to continually improve what we do.
You’ll work closely with colleagues across Fundraising, Volunteering, Strategic Communications, Communities and Engagement, Digital and the wider global Mercy Ships network. This is a highly collaborative role where your ability to influence, prioritise and bring clarity to complex activity will be just as important as your marketing expertise.
We’re looking for someone who combines creative judgement with operational discipline.
You’ll know what makes a great campaign, but you’ll also understand everything that needs to happen behind the scenes to deliver it successfully. You’ll be comfortable moving between creative conversations, campaign planning, digital performance, budgets, stakeholder discussions and team leadership.
You may already be a Head of Marketing, or you could be an experienced senior marketing or campaigns professional ready to take the next step. What matters most is your track record of leading integrated campaigns, managing multidisciplinary teams and turning organisational priorities into marketing activity that delivers results.
This isn’t a role for someone who simply wants to maintain what already exists. We’re strengthening how marketing works across Mercy Ships UK, building greater integration between digital, creative, content and campaign delivery and creating a more resilient in-house capability for the future.
You’ll have the opportunity to shape those ways of working, develop the team and help create a marketing function capable of supporting Mercy Ships UK’s ambitious plans for growth.
And ultimately, the campaigns you help deliver have a purpose far beyond marketing metrics.
They help raise the funds, recruit the volunteers and build the awareness that enable Mercy Ships to bring hope and healing to people around the world.
If you’re an experienced marketing leader who loves making great ideas happen and you want your expertise to contribute to something genuinely meaningful, we’d love to hear from you.

To date we have worked primarily with schools, colleges and multi-academy trusts, but we are now actively seeking to grow our work within higher education and the non-profit sector. Whilst most of the work delivered by our UK hub is with UK-based organisations, we also deliver programmes elsewhere in Europe and manage several international programmes.

- Act as a trusted first point of contact for clients, managing relationships, delivering briefings and platform demos, and preparing data-led impact reports
- Handle new enquiries, follow through with quotations and information, and support business development and proposal writing with the Director

- Forecast income, keep our financial systems up to date, and manage letters of engagement, purchase orders and invoicing requests.
- Provide occasional live support for virtual workshops, and executive assistant support to the Director
The balance of your week will shift through the year, with programme launches taking priority at times and more space for development work during school holidays. A key priority is to make full use of our AI capability (especially Claude) to speed up our processes and free up more time for the relationship-building and engagement work that matters most. This is something we’ll support you to build into your working practice from day one.

- A proactive, can-do attitude and comfort working independently
- Strong financial literacy and experience with CRM/database systems (e.g. Salesforce, Hubspot)

The opportunity:
This is a senior role with responsibility for the strategic direction, quality and impact of We Belong’s youth development portfolio. Reporting to the CEO and working as a member of the Senior Leadership Team, you will lead programmes spanning early intervention, educational attainment, further and higher education, employability, skills development, youth leadership and progression into positive opportunities.
You will oversee the Let Us Learn Programme, Emerging Young Leaders Programme, Schools Excellence Programme and Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Bronze programme. You will also strengthen young people’s influence within We Belong through the Core Group, ensuring that lived experience informs organisational priorities and programme development.
The Context:
Following the landmark Supreme Court judgment in the Tigere case, which helped secure fairer access to higher education for young migrants, We Belong has continued working to ensure that young people can progress into higher education. This has included successful campaigning to increase scholarship opportunities and building strong relationships with educational institutions across the UK.
However, more work is needed. Young migrants can experience significant barriers to educational attainment, further and higher education, employment and personal development because of their immigration status.
These barriers can arise long before a young person reaches the point of applying to university, beginning an apprenticeship or entering employment. We recognise that university is not the only pathway to success and that young people should be supported to explore a range of routes that reflect their ambitions, strengths and circumstances.
Early intervention is therefore essential to ensure that young migrants understand their rights, receive accurate information and appropriate support, and are able to make informed decisions about their education, training, employment and future.
This is an exciting opportunity for someone who is passionate about working with young people, supporting their development and creating pathways for them to achieve their ambitions.
If successful, the applicant will be joining an award-winning youth charity and a staff team dedicated to improving outcomes for young migrants between the ages of 16-25 years old and empowering young people to create change.
Please submit your application by sending your CV and a cover letter explaining how your experience and background make you suitable for this role. Applications submitted without both a CV and a cover letter will not be considered.

About Ocean Generation
Ocean Generation is a UNESCO-endorsed Ocean education charity turning Science into Storytelling. We make Ocean Literacy accessible through film, pop-culture, and education programmes that empower practical action.
Most people grow up unaware that the Ocean is keeping us all alive: Ocean Generation exists to change that.
Established in 2009 by film producer Jo Ruxton MBE, our award-winning documentary ‘A Plastic Ocean’ was named by Sir David Attenborough as “one of the most important films of our time” and ignited mass public awareness about the impact of plastic pollution.
Today, we address a full range of human-made threats impacting the Ocean, with a particular focus on programmes for young people across the world.
Our Ocean Intelligence approach – how we translate complex Ocean science into engaging content through Science and Storytelling – has been endorsed by the Intergovernmental Oceanic Commission of UNESCO as a project under the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development.
