At One Degree, our mentors, ambassadors, and teachers are more than just volunteers—they’re lifelines for students often overlooked in their schools and communities. By offering direction, encouragement, and a sense of possibility, our volunteers transform lives while experiencing the profound reward of making a real, tangible impact.

Most of our mentors are young professionals, bringing passion, patience, and empathy to help GCSE/Year 11 students (ages 15–16) navigate their challenges. These volunteers serve as role models, guiding students who might otherwise feel left behind toward brighter futures.

To foster meaningful connections and provide continuity, we ask volunteers to commit to at least three in-person or online sessions per year. This ensures students build trust and form bonds with the people dedicated to helping them succeed.

What time commitments are required?

Preparation

1. Mentor registration (2 minutes)
2. Online mentor training course (30 minutes)
3. Online safeguarding course (30 minutes)
4. Online DBS/CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) check (15 minutes)
5. Online personalised 1-on-1 mentor training (2 x 30 minutes)

Total time needed to become a mentor – approximately 2.5 hours

What it takes

Anyone who meets the following criteria is welcome to apply:

• Able to volunteer a minimum of three sessions per programme
• Patient, empathetic and considerate
• Willing to participate in group activities and sports

Important Note! You do NOT need exceptional skills in Maths or English, or previous mentoring or teaching experience to be a One Degree mentor.

Read Easy provides free, confidential, one to one reading coaching for adults who struggle with reading, through a network of volunteer groups. 

The Referrals Networker builds relationships with local agencies who may be able to refer potential Readers to the group.

Role of a Referrals Networker:
● Liaising with your group to establish which organisations have already been contacted, so that you can build on that initial work
● Managing the relationship between the referral agencies and the group
● Seeking out new referral agencies as the group grows in capacity
● Familiarising yourself with the Publicity Organiser’s resources available to you
● Creating a record of organisations and agencies who are likely to come into contact with those who don’t read and the dates you are in touch with them
● Contacting these organisations regularly to provide information about what your group offers and identify how they can best inform their personnel to make referrals
● Keeping your local group informed about your activity and identifying how many of your contacts refer new Readers
● Attending Management Team meetings, typically every 6-8 weeks 

Skills needed:
● Confidence to promote the work of Read Easy and how it can support local people who would like to improve their reading skills
● Ability to develop strong working relationships with local referral agencies and to manage expectations

As we continue to grow nationally and internationally, we are seeking a Volunteer Central Operations Director to create structure, accountability, and operational excellence across all volunteer departments.

Job Purpose

The Volunteer Central Operations Director serves as the operational backbone of the organisation, ensuring departments, projects, and volunteer teams work efficiently, meet deadlines, and deliver measurable outcomes.

The role oversees project delivery, performance monitoring, reporting systems, KPI tracking, volunteer accountability, and cross-department coordination, helping turn organisational vision into effective execution.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead and coordinate organisational operations across all volunteer departments.
• Manage the Central Operations Team, including Analysts, Coordinators, and Assistants.
• Oversee project delivery, ensuring milestones, deadlines, and objectives are achieved.
• Monitor organisational performance, identify risks and bottlenecks, and implement solutions.
• Establish accountability systems, workflows, reporting processes, and operational procedures.
• Develop and maintain KPI dashboards, departmental scorecards, and performance reports.
• Track volunteer engagement, project progress, fundraising outcomes, and organisational impact.
• Facilitate communication and collaboration between departments.
• Lead operational meetings and support monthly performance reviews.
• Produce reports, risk assessments, and recommendations for senior leadership.
• Support implementation of organisational priorities and strategic initiatives.
• Mentor department leaders and promote volunteer engagement, wellbeing, and retention.
• Foster a culture of accountability, professionalism, collaboration, and continuous improvement.

• Experience leading teams, projects, programmes, or organisational operations.

• Proficiency with tools such as Google Workspace, Microsoft Office, Trello, Asana, ClickUp, Airtable, Notion, Slack, and Teams.
• Experience in charities, CICs, volunteer-led organisations, operations management, programme management, or community development is desirable.
• Understanding of trauma-informed, survivor-led, or social impact organisations is beneficial.

Role Overview: Senior Recruiter (Volunteer)

The Senior Recruiter plays a vital leadership role in expanding Solution Community’s global volunteer team. This person will design and execute recruitment strategies, strengthen outreach pipelines, and ensure we attract passionate, skilled individuals aligned with our mission. As a senior leader in the volunteer recruitment team, you will guide recruitment operations, support interview processes, and help create a positive, welcoming experience for prospective volunteers.

Key Responsibilities

Recruitment Strategy & Planning

• Develop and implement volunteer recruitment strategies aligned with organizational needs and growth goals.

• Identify talent gaps; collaborate with department leads to understand role requirements.

• Build scalable recruitment pipelines to support the onboarding of international volunteers.

Volunteer Sourcing & Outreach

• Source volunteers through job boards, social platforms, professional networks, NGOs, and community groups.

• Strengthen outreach efforts to diversify volunteer participation across countries and backgrounds.

• Engage potential volunteers and inspire interest in Solution Community’s mission and opportunities.

Interviewing & Selection

• Conduct initial screening calls and interviews to assess volunteer fit, skills, and motivation.

• Support hiring teams with interview invitations using Google iCal Link

• Ensure recruitment decisions reflect Solution Community’s values of compassion, integrity, and inclusivity.

Recruitment Operations & Processes

• Improve and maintain recruitment workflows, templates, and documentation.

• Track and report recruitment metrics to leadership (applications, conversion, placements, etc.).

• Collaborate with the onboarding team to ensure smooth transitions from selection to onboarding.

Volunteer Experience & Engagement

• Create a welcoming, supportive recruitment experience for all applicants.

• Provide timely communication and updates throughout the recruitment lifecycle.

• Gather feedback from candidates and teams to strengthen the volunteer experience.

Leadership & Collaboration

• Mentor junior recruiters and assist in training new recruitment volunteers.

• Partner with People Operations, Onboarding, HR, and Program teams to ensure alignment.

• Serve as an ambassador for Solution Community’s mission, values, and culture globally.

Qualifications

Required

• 3+ years of experience in recruitment, talent acquisition, volunteer coordination, or related HR roles.

• Ability to manage high-volume recruitment pipelines in a fast-paced, mission-driven environment.

• Strong communication, interviewing, and interpersonal skills.

• Passion for community building, social impact, and supporting global volunteers.

• Comfortable working in a remote environment across multiple time zones.

Preferred

• Experience in non-profit, volunteer-based, or international organizations.

• Familiarity with recruitment systems, applicant tracking tools, and digital collaboration platforms.

• Experience mentoring or guiding recruitment teams.
