The purpose of the role

The role covers aspects of recruitment and widening access to Oxford specifically and widening participation to higher education in general.

About the role
University Access Officers are responsible for delivering The Access Project’s high impact mentoring programme to students across our partner schools. This role works with a caseload of students supporting them from the start of Year 10 up to the end of Year 11 to understand the pathway to a top university.
The role also involves project coordination, working with our schools, volunteers and teams across The Access Project to ensure our young people are fully supported and have the best possible chance of achieving social mobility and enhancing their future prospects.
This role is for a University Access Officer to work across one school., Shirebrook Academy. Our schools are shown on a map on our website.
Role responsibilities
- Work directly with young people mentoring a caseload of students in a professional and safe manner.
- Deliver our University Readiness programme through in-depth, targeted 1:1 mentoring sessions with Year 10 to Year 11 students.
- Assess student progress towards being able to make successful sixth form applications.
- Engage with students in school and enrol them onto the programme.
- Match students with volunteer tutors.
- Monitor student attendance to tutorials and devise innovative solutions to encourage attendance.
- Monitor the impact of tutorials and intervene as appropriate.
- Build and manage relationships with volunteer tutors to ensure they have a positive experience of the programme
- Manage tutor attendance to tutorials through weekly monitoring systems
- Lead on quality assurance of tuition pairings completing a caseload of drop ins.
- Upload information onto the Salesforce database (training is provided)
- Work with school staff to ensure their cooperation and timely completion of activities contributing to the smooth running of the programme
- Direct enrolled students to appropriate wider enrichment opportunities, encouraging both extra and super-curricular participation and reflection.
- Work with Enrichment & Events team and partner schools to deliver school trips to universities, including trip logistics and leading groups of young people on trip days.

Training and Development

Youth Engagement Officer
Location: Hybrid. Expected to be in our London office in Victoria at least one day per week. You can be remote every other day or come into the office. Your office days are flexible and can be agreed with your manager, other than for monthly team days where you must be in person. Some nationwide travel expected for Youth Steering Group training days, events and conferences. After passing probation, up to six weeks ‘super remote’ working per year, where you can work anywhere in the world as long as you’re online for four hours of the UK workday.
Contract: Fixed Term Contract until 31 August 2026 with the possibility to extend.
Holidays: 38 days per year, including our 3-day winter shut down and eight flexible bank holidays.
Hours: 37.5 hours per week (full time) Please note as this role works with young people there will be occasions where your working hours will be outside the standard 9-5:30pm. This will typically be a few meetings per month that can last until 7pm and about four weekend days over the year. This is to ensure our activities fit around the young people’s education and work commitments.

As the Youth Engagement Officer, you will work with our Head of Youth Engagement to ensure our Youth Steering Group can lead their own campaign activities, engage directly with decision makers, and collaborate with other young people to bring about the change they want to see. You will also support and manage the logistics of our Youth Summit, Youth Engagement Working Group and other youth engagement events.

Our Youth Steering Group is made up of 25 brilliant young people, aged 14-24, who draw on their lived experience of the different barriers to accessing a fair education, to campaign for change. You will support the young people to lead their own campaign activity, write their monthly Youth Bulletin and engage directly with policy makers. You will also help the group to participate in FEA decision making, support the design and facilitation of their monthly meetings and training days, help them make progress against their personal development plans. This role will include working directly with young people, session planning and facilitation, policy research and managing logistics.
Ensure the Fair Education Youth Summit is a success and remains truly youth-led
Our Youth Steering Group design and run the annual Fair Education Youth Summit. The event is led by young people for young people and brings together young changemakers from across our membership and the wider education and youth sectors to develop their youth leadership skills, collaborate on campaigns, and engage directly with decision makers. You will support the young people to design sessions, secure speakers, embed past feedback and plan the event structure. You will also support with the event logistics, guestlist management, participant communications and collecting attendee feedback.
Support our members to improve their youth engagement practice
Our Youth Engagement Working Group supports FEA members and other sector organsiations to increase and improve their own youth engagement practice. You will support the management of logistics, promote the workshops, and communicate with working group members. You will also support the facilitation of the workshops and ensure the attendee data and feedback is correctly logged and actioned. The critical responsibilities of this role are described above. Quest for Learning is an education charity on a mission to close the gap for primary school children in Oxfordshire who are falling behind - often due to complex and compounding disadvantage. Many of the children we support are growing up in poverty, with limited access to books, low parental literacy, and challenging home environments. Some face health inequalities, live in areas affected by crime, or have recently arrived in the UK as refugees or asylum seekers.

On average, our small-group tutoring helps pupils make 13 months of progress in just 10 hours - building not only essential skills, but also confidence, motivation, and a renewed sense of possibility.

About the role
We're looking for a dynamic, relationship-focused, and highly organised individual to oversee our teaching programmes, school partnerships, and tutor network.
This role is crucial to ensuring our programmes are high-quality, well-managed, and meeting the needs of schools. You will be the first point of contact for schools, building strong relationships with headteachers and SENCOs, and ensuring that we offer the right support at the right time.
You will manage our team of tutors, ensuring they have the resources, training, and support needed to deliver our programmes to the highest standard. You will also oversee safeguarding and the measurement of programme impact, working closely with the fundraiser to ensure we have strong data for funding applications.

Key responsibilities
School relationships and programme development (account management)
- Develop and maintain strong relationships with schools and other stakeholders, ensuring our programmes align with their needs.
- Be proactive in identifying opportunities for growth, understanding school funding challenges, and positioning Quest for Learning as a key partner.

Safeguarding (Designated Safeguarding Lead - DSL)
- Act as the DSL for Quest for Learning (once trained) with support from the Chief Executive as Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead, ensuring all safeguarding policies and processes are followed.
- Train tutors in best safeguarding practices and ensure incidents are properly reported and recorded.
- Liaise with schools and external agencies where necessary.
Impact measurement & fundraising support
- Ensure a strong framework of assessment and impact measurement for pupils and our programmes.
- Analyse and collate data on programme effectiveness, reporting to the team.
- Work with the fundraiser to provide teaching-related content for funding bids and reports.
Person specification
Essential:
- Strong experience in account management, partnerships, or relationship management (preferably in education or the charity sector).
- Experience working in education or service delivery (e.g. as a teacher, tutor, or programme manager).

Promote and market the project through outreach to schools and other community groups in Southwark/Havering and surrounding areas, and organise bookings.
Volunteer Management:

Work in collaboration with the Leadership Team and Business Support Team to recruit and train Volunteers.

Oversee and manage the volunteers in the team who support activities and events, providing necessary guidance and supervision.

Work with the Leadership team to foster a positive and inclusive volunteer culture, recognising and appreciating their contributions.

Work with the leadership Team to monitor and evaluate volunteer performance and provide constructive feedback, reports, and support as needed.

Coordinate and oversee all Food Service / Project volunteers, and oversee the volunteer timetable to ensure the best use of volunteers
-
Coordinate the volunteer team at the warehouse and oversee groups of corporate volunteers, school groups, and other youth groups visiting to help.

Ensure that volunteers are trained to undertake responsibilities within the warehouse and to meet the relevant legal requirements. This could include basic food hygiene, first aid, evacuation procedures, manual handling and lifting, health and safety, and fire procedures
Administration and Reporting:

Maintain accurate records of activities, participant attendance, incidents, Impact Reporting, Monitoring and Evaluations, including referral processes, and ensure the requirements of Data Protection, Quality Assurance, Funding, and Compliance are met.

Prepare regular reports for all the Projects highlighting progress, challenges, and recommendations for improvement.

Work within agreed budgets for activities, Camps, and Pastoral Care Services, ensuring efficient resource allocation.

Ensure that local data is entered into the database

Maintain accurate records of client interactions, services provided, and outcomes achieved for reporting and evaluation purposes.

Provide regular updates to the Leadership Team on service delivery and community needs.

Produce monthly project reports and keep the CRM/ Database updated

Experience in working with children and young people, in particular individuals who are experiencing significant Poverty and Inequality and may also have multiple and complex needs.

The ability to communicate effectively with a wide variety of people and establish and maintain good working relationships with Partners and external stakeholders

Qualifications and Skills:

Qualifications/Experience in a relevant field (e.g., social work, Counselling, psychology, Information Advice and Guidance, Education, or related disciplines). A master's degree is desirable.

Proven experience in Programme Planning and Event Management, preferably within a Charity, Community, Education, or similar setting.

Strong organisational, Project Management and Prioritising abilities, with impeccable attention to detail.
