In the spring of 2025, the Dunhill Medical Trust changed its name to the Vivensa Foundation as part of a wider plan to better reflect its work as a funder and impact-intentional investor.
The name ‘Vivensa’ is inspired by the Latin word vivens, meaning to live, be alive, or to reside in — a reflection of the work we support our award-holders and investees to do. But this is more than a change of name — it reaffirms our commitment to funding the remarkable science and radical social change needed for people to age well on their terms.
It was back in the 1980s that the Board of the predecessor charity recognised that the shifting demographics would drive a need for investment in a high-quality research base to improve our understanding of the mechanisms of ageing and ageing-related disease and the delivery of innovation in the health and social care of older people. Since then, the Foundation has been funding some of the very best of the UK’s researchers and community innovators to do just that.
The Foundation plans to play its part in three broad ways:
· investing in ideas
· connecting research and practice and
· fostering flourishing communities.
With our new identity and with our refreshed Strategic Framework and priorities for the next five years launched in April, we are looking forward to writing our next chapter.
Board vacancy
Owing to a retirement, we welcome applications for the position of Trustee from candidates with expertise in one of the priority areas set out in our new plan.
We will prioritise applications, from either:
- research active geriatricians or gerontologists with demonstrable expertise in translating research and evidence into practice or;
- professionals with a background in delivering innovative change in NHS or local authority settings, social care or housing provision with the experience and networks to turn the latest evidence into practice.
The work we fund means that we know all too well the negative impacts of inequity. Do you live in Wales and want to gain valuable skills, have new experiences, and support vulnerable people?
We are offering 2 young people aged 18-25 the opportunity to volunteer for up to 11 months with the Portuguese Red Cross in Braga, Portugal.
You will be working on a range of projects, which will give you the chance to explore the different kinds of social action that the Portuguese Red Cross undertake in Braga.

Typical tasks may involve:
- Supporting the charity shop, Ponto Vermelho, with social media, sorting donations and organising the displays.
- Supporting in the Youth Centre for the Roma Community – organising and delivering activities, helping with homework.
- Supporting in the Foster Care for Unaccompanied Minor Refugees.
- Supporting the Social Kindergarten.
- Assisting with projects which help the homeless and the elderly.
- Assisting in the writing of project proposals and funding bids.

We are keen to hear from individuals especially those who do not normally get the chance to volunteer overseas, who are passionate and motivated about working in the humanitarian sector and international volunteering but who also understand that these types of placements require adaptability and resilience. About the opportunity
We are seeking committed vegetarians and vegans to join our volunteer board of trustees.
Vegetarian for Life (VfL) is the only UK charity specifically dedicated to supporting older vegetarians and vegans. If you share our belief that all older people should be enabled to maintain their chosen diet and lifestyle, have access to trusted information, and enjoy good quality plant-based food wherever they live, this role may be of interest to you.
Our trustees work with the CEO of VfL and its operational team to ensure strong governance and help realise the strategic aims of this unique and growing charity. Since its formation in 2007, VfL has earned widespread respect for its advocacy, training, and resources that support dignity and choice in later life.
In line with our new Vision for 2030, we are looking to strengthen our board with a new trustee who brings experience of business development and income generation. This role is ideal for someone who understands how values-led enterprise can fuel social change.

The role of trustee is a voluntary one, with expenses paid when incurred in connection with the role. The board meets quarterly, mainly via video conferencing, with at least one in-person meeting annually in Manchester. Meetings are held on Saturdays, with additional (short) discussions scheduled by arrangement when needed.

Research and Policy
We envision a future where the rights of older vegetarians and vegans are protected in law, regulation and practice –given equal status to faith-based diets and recognised as central to dignity, identity and person-centred care. VfL will lead in building the evidence base and advancing understanding of the barriers older veg*ns face.

Activity programme: our weekly-programme of activities includes chair-based exercise, Zumba, Tai Chi, social club with board games, craft club, quiz sessions, walking group, monthly special lunches and aqua fitness. We also run a wide range of out and about trips annually.
Information and advice: our trained advisers offer free accredited information and advice to older adults on benefits, health and end of life, housing, social care, local services and more.
Befriending and volunteering: we provide a high-quality, free, face-to-face and telephone befriending service, helping to reduce social isolation and promote independence.
Foot health service: we offer a low-cost paid-for foot health service for our clients.
Role description
As Chair, you will provide leadership and strategic direction to the Board of Trustees. Your regular responsibilities will include liaising with the CEO to set the agenda and agree the papers for Board meetings, chairing Board meetings, holding regular catch-ups with Trustees, and leading on Trustee recruitment and retention and Board development. As a Trustee, you will have a number of core duties, including ensuring the organisation complies with its governing document, charity law, company law, and relevant legislation; ensuring it pursues its objectives as defined in its governing document; ensuring the financial stability of the organisation; and ensuring the effective and efficient administration of the organisation.

Essential
· Previous Board-level experience, either as a Trustee or in another non-executive capacity
· Experience of chairing (either a Trustee Board or other professional experience)
· Strong leadership and interpersonal skills
· Willingness and capacity to devote the necessary time
· Good independent judgment
· A commitment to Age UK Merton and its vision, mission and values
· An understanding of the legal duties, responsibilities and liabilities of Trusteeship
Desirable
· Some experience or understanding of the adult social care or health sectors
· An understanding of Merton as a place

James Hirons is a registered dynamic charity focusing on providing exceptional care to our residents and their families to 'Make everyday a day worth living". We are currently rated “good” following assessment by the Care Quality Commission.
We are looking for at least two trustees; ideally one with a legal background and one with a marketing background. Other interested parties with different skills and knowledge are most welcome.
James Hirons is a small but well-funded independent care home based in a pleasant area of Leamington Spa. We have been providing quality care since 1953. The Trustee team provide essential support to the Management and staff of the Home and this opportunity offers a rewarding and enjoyable experience.
All applications must meet the requirements of trustees in line with the Charity Commission requirements, and a full and detailed induction and training will be provided.
Key responsibilities
- To play a key role in the strategic vision and direction of our charity.
- To understand legal and financial responsibilities of board members.
- To act as an enthusiastic and positive ambassador for the Home, advocating on our behalf and representing us within the local community.
- To proactively support our commitment to equality.
- To attend board meetings (normally 6 per year, held on a weekday morning) and take part in sub-committees as appropriate.
- To support, and in some cases lead, relationships with key stakeholders and partners and build network on behalf on the charity.
Person specification
- Be an effective communicator and able to work constructively in a small team.
- Have a commitment to caring, quality of care and services.
- A knowledge and/or an understanding of what it means to be a trustee (training will be given to those who have not been on a board of trustees before)
