The role
Join us as our Principal M&E Engineer (Projects) and drive our M&E refurbishment program (Circa £4M to £6M per annum) across our diverse portfolio of M&E assets, from our mechanised locks and bridges – some of the oldest in the UK, pumping stations and water control structures, not to mention the historic Anderton Boat Lift as well as the very new. You will assess outputs from inspections, design and develop solutions, and produce specifications, and briefs to deliver works through our national framework contractors or in-house M&E delivery teams. Acting as delegated Sponsor under the Trusts Infrastructure Risk Framework, you will have the accountability for ensuring that the M&E program is governed effectively and delivers the objectives to meet the identified needs.
Your team will undertake the role of design lead within our project delivery teams, acting as the subject matter expert supporting the project manager. You will be joining us at a very exciting time for the team when we are planning future national M&E refurbishment delivery contracts and looking to deliver more work internally.

As a mental health content specialist, you will play a key role in creating new, valuable mental health-related content aimed at reducing panic and anxiety for users of our app. You will play a key role in informing the overall direction of our mental health app to ensure that we are providing evidence-based support for anxiety and panic.
The role will entail taking on responsibility for the content of our app, Mind Ease. This includes:
- Creating a plan for how we better support users around panic and anxiety through our app, based on evidence-based techniques and informed by the needs of our users
- Communicating best practice around treating anxiety and panic to our small team of non-clinicians
- Writing snappy and engaging psychoeducational activities to add to our library of in-app content. Adapting these activities based on feedback from users and the team.
- Conducting research to inform the app direction, including brief literature reviews, interviews/surveys with app users, and referencing data on how users engage with the app
- If needed, writing blog articles or social media posts around anxiety and panic to be published on our website
Mandatory requirements for this role:
- Well-read and knowledgeable about best practices in mental health generally, with deep understanding of panic and anxiety specifically

The pay for this role is £25 per hour. We estimate there would be 10-20 hours of work per week, but the exact number of hours and working times are flexible to suit the right candidate. We are hiring a Senior AI Scientist to support the company in delivering its mission of improving the lives of patients by transforming research into mental illness and dementia. The company is working in this highly innovative area to accelerate the development of new treatments, improve healthcare services, and advance our understanding of complex, debilitating conditions like Major Depressive Disorder, Schizophrenia, Bipolar Disorder and Alzheimer’s disease.
To do this, we curate a globally unique dataset of more than 4.6 million patients’ anonymised psychiatric electronic health records (EHRs) for research use. A crucial part of our curation process is the application of AI-enable natural language processing algorithms to structure the free text elements of the EHR (clinical notes, letters, reports etc). Development of these NLP models is the primary focus of our in-house AI team, in which this role sits.
The AI Team are primarily responsible for developing and training the Natural Language Processing models that underpin Akrivia’s data structuring pipeline. The goal of this activity is to develop accurate, clinically valid, explainable, and scalable NLP models to extract new structured data from EHR free-text fields. The AI Team collaborate closely with the Research Team (to match the outputs of their models to research needs), the Engineering Team (to embed their models into Akrivia’s data processing pipeline), and with the Client Engagement team (to help platform users apply their model outputs effectively). The AI Team also carry out exploratory research to develop new applications of AI for improving mental health research and treatment.
The role will require strong technical skills with a focus on artificial intelligence approaches to natural language processing. A successful candidate will work on developing our existing technology solutions, develop novel applications of AI to solve challenges in the mental health space, and support our users in industry, academia and the NHS to apply our AI-derived data for their own research programs. The role would suit candidates with a strong interest in healthcare applications of AI and NLP, and/or explainable, transparent AI methods. Further details of the duties are provided below.
Duties

Lead and manage a team of AI scientists and healthcare data analysts, providing mentorship, guidance, and support in their professional development and project execution.

Take joint accountability (with the Head of AI/Research) for the accuracy, clinical validity, transparency and efficiency of models created by the AI team.

Carry out prototyping, exploratory research and literature review to develop novel applications of AI and related technologies to improve the breadth, depth and accuracy of our data structuring pipeline.

- Monitoring student and volunteer (work experience host) applications to ensure targets and milestones are met.

Essential:
- Experience working with one or more of the following groups: young people, teachers or school administrators, volunteers, universities or STEM professionals/employers.
- Knowledge and understanding of the STEM sector, including higher education, apprenticeships and STEM careers.
- An understanding of the social and economic barriers that prevent some young people accessing STEM careers and an ability to recognise the importance of diversity and inclusion in STEM.
- Experience developing and maintaining strong working relationships with internal and external stakeholders at various levels.
- Experience planning and delivering training, events and workshops.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with strong presentation skills and an ability to adapt to a range of audiences.
- Flexible and adaptable, with an ability to pick up new tasks quickly, showing resilience when faced with challenges.
- Experience delivering programmes or projects for young people.
- Knowledge, understanding or experience of programme or project evaluation.
Desirable:

- 10 years+ proven leadership experience in a Technology Director or similar role and ability to both manage and inspire a team of technology professionals responsible for the platforms that support over 16 countries and Oxfam GB’s retail shop network and fundraising.
- Deep understanding of various technologies, software, hardware and systems to enable Oxfam GB to make informed decisions and guide our technology strategy.
- Ability to think strategically and align technology initiatives with the organisation goals and objectives. Able to identify opportunities for technology advancements that can improve Oxfam GB’s operations and impact.
- Strong programme and project management skills and ability to oversee the implementation of technology projects ensuring they are delivered on time within budget and that they meet the organisations requirements.
- Effective communication and collaboration skills with demonstrable ability to work closely with stakeholders and external partners. Should be able to clearly articulate complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
- Experienced in budget and resource allocation and management to ensure efficient and effective use of technology resources within the organisation
- Ability to identify and solve technology related problems, make informed decisions and adapt to changing circumstances to navigate challenges and drive innovation
- Experience in managing an organization’s IT activities to ensure data availability and network services with as little downtime as necessary
