The Royal College of Ophthalmologists is a membership organisation and the voice of the profession, with 4,500 members in the UK and overseas. Job purpose
Part of the Policy & Engagement department, the Senior Communications Officer is responsible for devising and supporting strategic communication initiatives that elevate the College’s visibility, advocate for the importance of sustainable ophthalmology services, spotlight our work and values, and promote membership. Working with colleagues, members and external partners, you will craft, execute and evaluate multichannel campaigns, secure profile-raising media coverage, and create engaging content for all our communications channels.
Main responsibilities
Strategic communication planning
- Plan, deliver and evaluate multichannel communications campaigns and plans – working with colleagues across the College to identify objectives, target audiences and key messaging.
- Contribute to developing and implementing communications strategies to increase the College’s profile, promote its work and the importance of ophthalmology, and support membership recruitment and retention.
Content development and management
- Contribute to developing, delivering and evaluating the performance of our content strategy and organisation-wide annual content plan.
- Work with all College departments to develop promotional materials, and to identify and gather content, stories and information for sharing across College media.
- Produce engaging, and accessible content for the College’s member magazine, social media accounts, website and e-newsletters.
- Copyedit, proofread and format publications, and manage the production of printed materials, including liaising with printers, designers, and other external suppliers.
- Help keep the College’s photo library up-to-date, and work with colleagues to commission photographs.
Media relations
- Identify new and nurture existing relationships with editors, journalists, commentators and producers, expanding and updating our contact list.
- Develop and implement a schedule of strategic media engagement, identifying new opportunities upon which the College should capitalise.
- Handle day-to-day proactive and reactive media relations, including acting as the first point of contact for media enquiries; writing and pitching comments, press releases, quotes, and op-eds; arranging interviews; and working with international, national and local media.
- Record, monitor and report on the College’s media activities, coverage and performance.
- Work with the Communications Manager to brief and commission training for College spokespeople.
- Work with colleagues to keep our media lines on priority policy issues up to date.
Digital communications
- Co-plan, produce and distribute targeted and segmented e-newsletters.
- Develop and implement a social media schedule that is aligned with organisational and departmental objectives, capitalises on external opportunities, reflects the latest trends and best practice, and delivers regular, timely and targeted posts.
- Manage the College’s social media channels day-to-day, producing topical and relevant content, and monitoring and responding to comments and messages.
- Support the Communications Manager in maintaining and managing the College website, including inputting to reviews and our ongoing redevelopment project and content audit.
- Support and train colleagues in using our content management system (CMS).
- Monitor and report on the College’s digital performance monthly.
Brand management
- Uphold the College’s brand identity and messaging across all materials and platforms.
- Help champion and ensure compliance with the College’s brand and style guidelines.
- Support the department in averting and handling communications crises as needed.
Other
- Undertake any other reasonable duties as required by the College

Person specification
Knowledge, qualifications and experience
- Demonstrable expertise in strategic/corporate communications, with a professional qualification or evidence of learning in communications, public relations, journalism or marketing
- At least three years’ experience of working in a busy communications team, press office or newsroom

This role will lead the development and delivery of volunteering and community outreach activities that connect people with their local rivers. Activities will include practical volunteering such as river clean-ups, planting days, and invasive species control, as well as citizen science, guided walks, and community workshops.
A key focus of the role is supporting the Chalk Streams in the City project - a major initiative to restore London’s rare urban chalk streams through community involvement. The postholder will help shape and deliver a programme of inclusive and engaging opportunities that inspire people to care for these unique and threatened habitats.

Our Wandsworth libraries are en route to become sanctuaries and there is active interest from schools and faith groups. The contract is initially for 62 days over one year. Background to the project
The Project is supported by Wandsworth Council as a Borough of Sanctuary and by Lewisham Refugee and Migrant Network (LRMN). Note that for the year 2025 Wandsworth is the London Borough of Culture.
Wandsworth Welcomes Refugees is a charity and operates primarily on a voluntary basis. We aim to make Wandsworth a welcoming place for those seeking sanctuary to feel safe, supported and part of our community. WWR is part of the City of Sanctuary movement and is the accredited organization in Wandsworth. We work with voluntary and community sector (VCS) and other organisations to encourage and support those wishing to reach out to refugees. We liaise with those interested in finding out more, offering general support, offering general support, or seeking to become accredited with City of Sanctuary.
Objectives of the project
The project will support the WWR committee activities and objectives. It will expand WWR reach and contacts in the VCS and other appropriate places and organisations. It will raise the profile of the sanctuary movement and encourage active participation by various organisations to create welcoming communities for people seeking sanctuary. Participation can range from an interest and small steps through to becoming accredited with City of Sanctuary.
Wandsworth and Sanctuaries
Sanctuaries include community groups, private organizations, public sector services, and individuals, united in their commitment to supporting those fleeing violence and persecution. Wandsworth is a Borough of Sanctuary, and the accredited organisations at present include a theatre, café and shop. Wandsworth libraries and some faith groups and schools are in the process of applying to become accredited. There is interest from other theatres, shops, sporting facilities and many others.
Role of the Community Engagement Officer

Assist the committee to increase its outreach and communication with interested organisations across the Borough

Join monthly committee meeting to report and plan

Meet and liaise with the key refugee support organisations in Wandsworth and a small number in other London boroughs

Organise an on-line Meet-Up for sharing and support ‘clinics’ (every 4-6 weeks); develop a launch for this event

Our client is seeking a dynamic and experienced Exhibitions Officer to join their Archives, Heritage Library and Museum services (AMS) team. In this role, you will be instrumental in developing and delivering exhibitions that explore the history and evolution of medicine, with a strong emphasis on audience engagement and accessibility. You will collaborate with the AMS team to create compelling exhibitions that resonate with a wide range of visitors.
Their collections, including archives, art and objects, books, and oral history recordings, offer a unique lens through which they can engage, inspire and entertain audiences. In London, their permanent displays and temporary exhibitions are viewed by over 32,000 visitors a year, with a further 400,000 visits to items on loan to museums and galleries around the world.
You’ll report to and work closely with the Senior Curator and hold a key role in a busy and experienced team of 9 heritage professionals.
Responsibilities
- plan and develop the content and delivery of a programme of changing exhibitions exploring themes from medicine past and present
