The Hospice Sector is facing an increasing financial burden due to funding issues and we need someone with a strong, strategic mind-set, proven senior leadership skills and the ability to influence at all levels.
As Chair of Trustees, you’ll lead the Board, ensuring effective governance and alignment with our values. You’ll work closely with the CEO, chair meetings, oversee Trustees development, and act as an ambassador for the Hospice. This role offers great scope for professional development, exposure at Board level and the opportunity to support the development of local services.
St Luke’s is an adult Hospice based in Winsford that cares for people in mid and south Cheshire who are suffering from cancer and other life limiting illnesses. We offer specialist treatment, care, advice and support to many seriously ill people and their families every year. We’re a small Hospice with a big heart whose ethos, values and beliefs are core to everything we do. If you feel the same way we’d love to hear from you.
We currently employ around 150 people and also have a bank of staff to support when needed. We receive vital support from our volunteers and have around 700 registered across all our services.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide strategic direction and contribute to the development and implementation of the Hospice vision and values.
- Work closely with the CEO to Ensure the Hospice is well governed and complies with legal and regulatory requirements, including charity law.
- Support the CEO and Senior Management Team, challenging where appropriate.
- Ensure the charity is financially stable and that budgets, expenditure and income generation are well-managed.
- Chair Board meetings, ensuring these are effective and that all actions and decisions are recorded and implemented in a timely manner.
- Ensure risk is managed effectively and that the Hospice has the appropriate policies in place and that these are reviewed regularly and are fit for purpose.
- Oversee the recruitment, support and development of Trustees, ensuring appraisals are completed annually.
- Ensure the Hospice is providing care based on current clinical best practice and in line with the requirements of the Care Quality Commission.
- Ensure the Senior Management Team are acting with integrity and challenge any unethical behaviour or actions as appropriate.
- Act as a representative of the Hospice in the local community, which may include attending events on occasion.
- Ensure you carry out your 6 main duties as a Trustee (see below).
Key Skills and Experience
- Proven substantial leadership experience at a senior level, preferably with experience of leading a governing Board (although this isn’t essential).
- Previous experience as a charity Trustee is highly desirable.
- Experience or knowledge of charity governance and regulations is also desirable.
- Experience of the development and implementation of strategy.
- A good understanding of the NHS and wider care sector and the challenges being faced.
- Experience of being involved in high-level decision making within an organisation.
- Proven experience of building and sustaining effective relationships with a variety of stakeholders.
- Excellent communication skills, verbal and written, with the ability to positively engage others.

The Vacancy

Oxfordshire Youth

1.Charity Trustees
The Charities Act 1993 defined charity trustees as those responsible under the charity’s governing document for controlling the administration and management of the charity. This is the case regardless of the terminology used to describe the role. The trustee board at Oxfordshire Youth usually comprises up to twelve trustees, although there is no formal limit on the number of trustees, including the following roles:
● the Chair of the Board of Trustees
● the Deputy Chair and CEO Line-Manager
● the Treasurer and Chair of the Finance, Audit and Risk Sub-Committee
● the Safeguarding Lead and Chair of the Safeguarding,Quality and Impact Sub-Committee the People and Development Lead and Staff Liaison Trustee
2.The Role of the Board
At its most fundamental the role of the trustee board is to receive assets from donors, safeguard them and apply them to the charitable purposes of Oxfordshire Youth. The trustee board must always act in the best interests of Oxfordshire Youth, exercising the same standard of duty of care that a prudent person would apply if looking after the affairs of someone for whom they have responsibility. Trustees are ultimately and legally responsible for everything Oxfordshire Youth does. Trustees fulfil this responsibility by deciding the strategy, establishing organisational policies and implementing appropriate monitoring, reporting and control mechanisms to ensure and evidence compliance. Trustees appoint the CEO and, on recommendation by the CEO, appoint the Senior Leadership Team to manage all operational matters and the operational team in line with the approved strategy, policies and control mechanisms.
3.Duties of a Trustee
The statutory duties of a trustee are:
● Ensure that Oxfordshire Youth complies with its Articles of Association, charity law, and any other relevant legislation or regulations
● Ensure that Oxfordshire Youth pursues its objects as defined in its Articles of Association
● Ensure Oxfordshire Youth applies its resources exclusively in pursuance of its objects. For example, it must not spend money on activities which are not included in the objects, however worthwhile they may be
● Contribute actively to the board of trustees by giving firm strategic direction to Oxfordshire Youth, setting overall policy, defining goals, setting targets and evaluating performance against agreed targets
● Safeguard the good name and values of Oxfordshire Youth
● Ensure the effective and efficient administration of the organization
● Ensure the financial stability of Oxfordshire Youth
● Protect and manage the property of the organisation and to ensure the proper investment of the organisation’s funds
● Ensure appropriate safeguarding governance, processes, training and competences are in place to safeguard children, young people, adults, staff and others that OY may come into contact with
● Appoint the Chief Executive Officer and monitor performance
In addition to the statutory duties listed above, each trustee should use any specific skills, knowledge or experience they have to help the board of trustees reach sound decisions. This may involve leading discussions, identifying key issues, providing advice and guidance on new initiatives and evaluating or offering advice on other areas in which the trustee has particular expertise. Trustees must ensure that the charity has a clear vision, mission and strategic direction and is focused on achieving these.
4.Minimum Time Commitment
Trustees are expected to attend an induction session at Oxfordshire Youth prior to their first board meeting. Trustees are expected to attend the four annual board meetings which last approximately three hours, these usually take place in the evening. Papers, proposals and reports are distributed one week in advance of meetings. Trustees may be asked to join a sub-committee or working group each of which have their own terms of reference and minimum time commitments. There is also an annual strategic planning board away-day or residential held each year.
5.Person Specification
Each trustee should have:
● A commitment to the mission of Oxfordshire Youth
● A willingness to meet the minimum time requirement
● Strategic and forward-looking vision in relation to the charity’s objects and aims
Independent judgement, political impartiality, an ability to think creatively and a willingness to speak their mind
● Good communication and interpersonal skills including a willingness to use tact and diplomacy to challenge and constructively criticize
● Integrity
● An understanding of the legal duties, responsibilities and liabilities of trusteeship (although further training will be provided)
The board of trustees collectively needs skills and experience in the following areas:
● Leadership and human resource management
● Financial management, income generation and enterprise
● Safeguarding experience and expertise
● Public policy and public affairs
● National and local youth sector
For this position, we are looking for an individual to join the Board of Trustees who is currently practicing within the marketing, pubic relations and business development profession; or who has significant skills and experience within this field, and who would be happy to use their position to provide marketing, pubic relations and business development advice and guidance to Oxfordshire Youth.

6.Trustee Role Boundaries
Trustees in a decision-making capacity:
● As a board of trustees
● As a sub-committee
● Chair - delegated authority by the board to make decisions between board meetings where necessary
● CEO Line Manager - delegated authority by the board to make decisions between board meetings where necessary
Trustee roles outside of the above decision-making capacity:
1. Advisory role (i.e. offering advice in an area of expertise). In this capacity the Trustee is acting as Trustee but, as noted above, does not have decision-making capacity in their own right.
2. Volunteer role (i.e. participating in an operational working group). Here the Trustee is subject to the decision-making of the operational team-member who is in a position of authority. As a volunteer the Trustee is at liberty to withdraw.
3. Observer role (i.e. attending an OY workshop for young people or observing OY work). In this capacity they are acting as a Trustee but have no role beyond observing or information gathering for the purposes of strengthening their own understanding and / or board-level decision-making.
4. Champion role (i.e. spreading the message about the work of OY). In this capacity they are acting as a Trustee, helping to build the profile of the work of OY, with no decision making, but with the view of creating a positive image and sign-posting people to OY.

The Nottingham and Nottinghamshire Refugee Forum (NNRF) is a £1m+ community-based charity providing advice and support to individuals and families who seek asylum or live as refugees. The Forum is a key partner of Nottingham City Council, and its work spans a number of separate programmes, much of which is delivered from our building and cafe in the heart of the city.
What exactly does the Forum do?
- We believe in a future where people are treated fairly and compassionately, and where everyone has the chance to feel safe and live with dignity.
- Working in partnership with others, our focus is on helping refugees and asylum seekers to rebuild their lives and to help with their immediate needs. We do this by providing a welcoming community centre, and by offering a range of support services and programmes, including impartial advice, advocacy and signposting.
We are seeking to appoint several Trustees during 2025, each on an initial 3-year term and applications are welcome from any background. In common with many organisations in this sector, people from ethnic minority backgrounds and those with lived experience of the asylum system are underrepresented on our Board at this time. Applicants who have governance experience, for example in schools or local government, or who may be working in a legal/HR role may be of interest. However, the most important attribute is that you have the energy, time and interest necessary to support the Forum’s work. Candidates will be appointed solely on a defined selection criterion, ensuring that ethnicity plays no role in the decision-making process.
The role of our Trustees is vital to what we do and it means that you can support those seeking refuge to re-establish themselves in a new country. The Board of Trustees has the ultimate authority and responsibility for directing and governing the organisation. Being a Trustee can be a hugely rewarding experience - it offers a fantastic development opportunity, the chance to make a positive impact, to build new relationships and to gain experience in charity operations. As a Trustee you will be able to use your knowledge, skills and experience and have a direct influence over a cause you care about. You will also get free access to a range of Board-level learning resources, including articles, webinars and national networking events.
These are voluntary roles, with meetings usually set for after normal working hours. The minimum time commitment is quite modest - we have six Board meetings per year, each lasting a couple of hours, and an Annual General Meeting in November. We do actively encourage Trustees to also get involved in the work of at least one of our committees, so all of this means a commitment of no more than 1 day per month.

James Hirons is a registered dynamic charity focusing on providing exceptional care to our residents and their families to 'Make everyday a day worth living". We are currently rated “good” following assessment by the Care Quality Commission.
We are looking for at least two trustees; ideally one with a legal background and one with a marketing background. Other interested parties with different skills and knowledge are most welcome.
James Hirons is a small but well-funded independent care home based in a pleasant area of Leamington Spa. We have been providing quality care since 1953. The Trustee team provide essential support to the Management and staff of the Home and this opportunity offers a rewarding and enjoyable experience.
All applications must meet the requirements of trustees in line with the Charity Commission requirements, and a full and detailed induction and training will be provided.
Key responsibilities
- To play a key role in the strategic vision and direction of our charity.
- To understand legal and financial responsibilities of board members.
- To act as an enthusiastic and positive ambassador for the Home, advocating on our behalf and representing us within the local community.
- To proactively support our commitment to equality.
- To attend board meetings (normally 6 per year, held on a weekday morning) and take part in sub-committees as appropriate.
- To support, and in some cases lead, relationships with key stakeholders and partners and build network on behalf on the charity.
Person specification
- Be an effective communicator and able to work constructively in a small team.
- Have a commitment to caring, quality of care and services.
- A knowledge and/or an understanding of what it means to be a trustee (training will be given to those who have not been on a board of trustees before)
- Experience on, or working closely with, boards or committees, is useful but not essential.

Time commitment:
Our Trustees are committed and provide a valuable and positive contribution, building on our strengths and ensuring our results are sustained. There are currently 10 Trustees within the Charity who bring a wide range of skills, knowledge and experience to the organisation.
You will attend an average of 4 Board meetings and up to 4 Committee meetings a year, plus Trustee away-days & other events, such as AGM. Meetings are held during business hours and are a mixture of in-person and online. Events (including strategy days, conference and AGM) usually take place at our offices in Plymouth.

The Role of Trustee
As a Trustee, you will be part of a voluntary team that:
· Provides governance and leadership for the charity
· Oversees the management of the theatre and ensures its sustainability
· Supports and champions the theatre’s values and mission
· Ensures good financial stewardship and legal compliance
· Contributes ideas, expertise and time to support our ongoing development
Trustees attend around 6–8 Board meetings per year (usually weekday evenings), plus occasional working groups and events. We aim to create a supportive, collaborative and enjoyable environment for all Trustees.
Chair Role: The current Chair of Trustees will progressively hand over the role during 2026. The incoming Chair will be selected by the Board after the AGM. Support and mentoring will be provided.

The Fourth Choir is seeking passionate and dedicated individuals to join the board managing our LGBTQ+ charitable entity and arts organisation.
The choir was founded in 2013 to give professional and non-professional LGBTQ+ singers and allies the opportunity to sing a cappella choral music to the highest standard possible, and since then has since performed more than 100 times in over 40 venues.
Fostering a fully inclusive musical environment is at the heart of what we do, and we work to affirm the identities of our members, support their wellbeing, challenge stereotypes and explore innovative themes through our activities and concert programming.
The choir is a registered charity and incorporated as a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO). We are governed and managed by a small board of trustees, all of whom are currently active singers with the choir. As well as governing and directing the strategic development of the choir, our trustees also manage ongoing operations, with each taking a lead role for a particular function.
We employ a professional Musical Director, who is responsible for our programming and musical leadership, and also work on occasion with a roster of Guest Conductors.
To continue building upon the success of our first decade, we are seeking to recruit external trustees to a number of key positions, who can bring external perspective, experience in key areas and help to build the capacity of our management team.

At Replacing Animal Research, we’ve been working for over half a century to replace the use of animals in research. We have significantly contributed to the development, and uptake, of non-animal methods by:
- Empowering scientists with our educational opportunities.

We are currently seeking more trustees to strengthen our board by providing strategic and governance support. We are looking for enthusiastic individuals with an interest or experience in scientific and medical research and testing and the development of non-animal methods. We’d also be interested in hearing from anyone passionate about eliminating animal use in research. A commitment to our purpose and aims and the strategic vision to support the Replacing Animal Research's future development.

A full induction is provided for new trustees as well as ongoing CPD opportunities and support. The role of trustee requires an annual time commitment of around 8 working days which works out around 5 hours per month. This includes:
- Preparation for and attendance at 6 general board meetings, which are held remotely.
- Preparation for and attendance at sub-committee meetings as appropriate.
- Between meetings, trustees may be asked to contribute to discussions via email or ad hoc telephone conferences on specific issues.
- Trustees may be asked to sit on or contribute to other project groups or activities from time to time.
- Attendance at 1 or 2 in-person board away days.
