Interim Finance Assistant
3-Month Fixed-Term Contract | On-Site | Immediate Start | St Albans
£25,000–£26,000 per annum | Full-Time
Are you a hands-on Finance Assistant with independent school experience, ready to hit the ground running?
We’re working with a well-established education organisation in St Albans that is looking for an experienced Finance Assistant to join its team on an initial 3-month fixed-term contract. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who can quickly get to grips with a new environment and make an immediate impact within a busy finance function.
What you’ll be doing
You’ll provide essential support across the finance team, including:
- Preparing and reconciling balance sheet accounts
- Supporting month-end and year-end processes
- Working across fixed assets, prepayments and fees in advance
- Investigating and resolving reconciliation items
- Completing bank reconciliations, journals and general ledger tasks
- Supporting purchase ledger, sales ledger and cashbook activities
- Maintaining accurate financial records and supporting documentation
- Using PASS to process and maintain pupil-related financial information
- Supporting audit preparation and wider finance activities as required
What we’re looking for
You’ll ideally have:
- Previous independent school finance experience
- Strong practical knowledge of PASS
- Proven experience with balance sheet reconciliations
- A solid understanding of month-end accounting processes
- Strong Excel and Microsoft Office skills
- Excellent attention to detail and organisation
- The ability to manage competing priorities and work to tight deadlines
- A proactive, flexible approach and the confidence to work independently

Working pattern: 2 days onsite initially, reducing to 1 day a week
We are recruiting two Finance Assistants to join a national charity during a period of increased workload and to support the clearance of an existing backlog.
These are hands-on finance roles offering broad exposure across transactional finance. One position will have a stronger focus on Accounts Payable, while the other will focus more on Accounts Receivable. Both roles require individuals who are organised, proactive and confident managing processes from start to finish.
What you will be doing:
- Processing purchase invoices and maintaining purchase ledgers
- Raising sales invoices and supporting credit control activities
- Carrying out bank reconciliations and ledger allocations
- Managing shared finance inboxes and responding to queries
- Chasing outstanding information from internal and external stakeholders
- Scanning, filing and maintaining finance records
- Handling finance post and document distribution
- Supporting month-end processes and reconciliations
- Assisting with general finance administration and enquiry resolution
- Ensuring financial records remain accurate, up to date and well organised
What we are looking for:
- Previous experience in a Finance Assistant, Accounts Assistantwithin the charity sector or similar
- Strong bookkeeping and purchase ledger experience
- Experience processing invoices from receipt through to payment
- Confidence managing accounts receivable activities and credit control
- Experience completing bank reconciliations
- Excellent organisational skills and attention to detail
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- A proactive approach to resolving queries and obtaining information
- Ability to work independently and manage competing priorities

To help us deliver this, we’re recruiting an experienced Finance Assistant, who is a values-led team player, who demonstrates exceptional attention to detail to provide high-quality financial administrative support across the organisation and deliver its ambitious objectives.
Essential criteria:
· Experience of maintaining accurate financial records, including income, expenditure and reconciliations
· Experience of using accounting or finance software (preferably Xero)
· Experience and understanding of financial bookkeeping
· Experience facilitating monthly payroll
· Experience working to deadlines with a high level of accuracy and attention to detail
