Fundraiser Job Description

Within a small, dynamic medical charity, the Fundraiser will play a pivotal role, engaging supporters through creative campaigns and cultivating strong relationships with donors, sponsors, and stakeholders.

The role is currently home-based in the UK, with remote staff communications.  Attendance at events across the UK is required, so the ability to travel is essential.

Key Responsibilities

Fundraising & Financial Management

• Monitor and track fundraising income in collaboration with the accountant

About You

You will be based in the UK.

You will have experience in marketing, ideally within charity fundraising, with a proven ability to deliver successful campaigns and grow income across multiple channels. You are confident writing persuasive copy, using data to inform decisions, and managing campaigns from inception to completion.

You are well organised, take initiative, and communicate easily with others. You work collaboratively, bring creativity to what you do, and pay close attention to detail. About us

We are a long-established UK research institution with charitable status and accounting operations in both the UK and East Africa. With an annual turnover of over £1 million, our finances span two entities and a range of restricted and unrestricted funds, consolidated for reporting. We are looking for a qualified accountant to join us as a contractor in a part-time, ongoing capacity to strengthen the running of our finance function.

The role

Our accountant in the East Africa office handles the day-to-day transactions — raising invoices, recording expenses and paying supplier bills. You will work alongside them, providing the qualified oversight, payment control and monthly discipline that keep the finance function running well, and supporting their development along the way.

It is a varied role that combines hands-on accuracy with oversight and coaching. In practice, you will:

• Support, guide and coach our accountant so that accounting entries are made correctly and consistently, building their skills over time.

• Run payment preparation and approval process in the UK entity, approving payment runs for release by local signatories.

• Financial management of project funds: accounting, expense management, funds transfers and accurate financial reporting.

• Review monthly results and report, examining the Statement of Financial Activities and underlying entries, and tracking performance against budget.

• Own the budgeting process, maintaining and updating the existing annual budget and monitoring it each month, and reporting quarterly to funders.

• Run a reliable monthly close and provide cover for our accountant during leave or absence to keep the accounting running.

• Lead on risk, taking an active interest in risk assessment, management and internal financial controls, working with compliance officer for local regulatory compliance.

• Attend and co-ordinate the finance and development meeting, support Companies House and Charity Commissions returns and updates.

• Administrative support for grant applications and management of these.

Key requirements

• Qualified accountant (ACCA, CIMA, ACA or CIPFA), or a finalist with strong relevant experience.

• Right to work in the UK.

• Proficient in Xero, and either proficient in Joiin or a similar consolidation system such as Hyperion and able to learn it quickly. Familiarity with payment platforms (desirable).

• Sound understanding of payment controls, dual authorisation and segregation of duties.

• Experience of maintaining a budget and reviewing monthly performance against it.

• Detail-focused and hands-on, with the judgement to review, oversee and coach a colleague.

• Charity or non-profit experience is useful but not essential, including experience of managing project funds, expenses and reporting to funders.

Financial Operations & Reporting

Weare supporting a small, publicly funded organisation to recruit an experienced Finance Lead on a temporary basis for an initial 3-month period. This is an excellent opportunity to join a highly respected organisation with a national remit. With a workforce of around 22 employees and a small, collaborative corporate services team, the successful candidate will play a key role in ensuring the smooth running of the finance function. The organisation operates in a public-sector environment and works closely with external stakeholders, auditors and governance committees.

Key Responsibilities

To lead on the Finance and Corporate Management Information for the Commission, including financial reporting, external returns, banking, budgeting and budget management, financial projections, capital and internal audit.

• Lead day-to-day finance operations and financial stewardship.
• Support budgeting, forecasting and financial planning activities.
• Produce management information, financial reports and expenditure analysis.
• Complete bank reconciliations, month-end processes and financial controls
• Liaise with external auditors and support audit preparation.
• Support risk management, governance and committee reporting.
• Work closely with operational managers and senior stakeholders on budget monitoring and financial matters.

About You

• Qualified accountant (ACCA, CIMA, ACA or equivalent) or a strong qualified-by-experience finance professional.
• Experience managing budgets, forecasting and financial planning.
• Strong management reporting skills, including variance analysis and financial commentary.
• Experience of month-end processes, bank reconciliations, balance sheet reconciliations and financial controls.
• Experience supporting external audits and preparing financial information for auditors.
• Ability to work effectively with senior stakeholders, budget holders and non-finance managers.
• Strong understanding of financial governance, policies and procedures.
• Experience within a public sector, regulatory, charity or publicly funded organisation would be highly desirable

We are seeking an excellent qualified accountant to join our Financial Planning and Reporting team, as a Finance Business Partner, supporting colleagues in the UK Countries Directorate more specifically for England (though you do not need to live in England). This is a key role working directly with our conservation delivery and our reserves network areas, all with individual characteristics and skills requirements.

What's the role about?

As a Finance Business Partner you will work proactively with senior colleagues to provide an added-value service of financial support to our UK Countries Directorate. In addition to a strong management accounting background, you will understand the difference that can be made through strong business partnering relationships and be confident in building those relationships. You will gain the respect and confidence of the colleagues you support through strong communication skills (written and oral) and your ability to constructively challenge ideas and plans. You will add value through gaining an intimate understanding of the Directorate that you partner, together with contributing to business performance and the requirements of the finance function with the charity's need.

You will be a fully qualified accountant with up-to-date technical knowledge and a desire to progress in your profession. We will want the successful candidate to influence change and use their skill set to further drive the organisation's objectives forward. You will also be comfortable working under pressure, to tight deadlines, and interacting with people at all levels within the RSPB.

Essential skills, knowledge and experience:

• Fully qualified accountant (ICAEW, ACCA, ICAS, CIMA, or equivalent professional body)
• Sound knowledge of technical accounting legislation
• Ability to act as a critical friend to senior management balancing challenge and support. Develop effective working relationships that influence and challenge senior management teams, so that the role of the Finance Business Partner is an integral and valued part of the organisation
• Ability to influence decision makers through sound logic, diplomacy and assertiveness, with the ability to convey appropriate financial messages to various audiences
• Ability to evaluate incomplete and complex financial information, to develop and consider a range of possible options and make a judgement as to the recommended course of action
• Excellent communication (written and oral), coaching, mentoring, presentation and training skills
• Ability to ascertain financial trends and calculate the impact of them on the organisation under various scenarios
• Working in cross-functional teams to provide transformational advice on new initiatives, investment appraisals/organisational restructures/matters of risk and control design effective mitigation strategies, in order to support effective decision making
• Build capability and knowledge in managers so that they can effectively manage their budgets through effective financial information, support and advice
• Working with all finance teams, to implement new Finance initiatives, ensuring the highest level of customer service and procedures are continuously reviewed so that the service is business focused in the delivery of objectives with an expert knowledge of your client area

We're looking for a qualified finance professional who can bring strong business partnering skills and transferable experience to the role. Experience of financial forecasting, organisational change, coaching non-financial colleagues, annual accounts preparation or working within the charity sector would be beneficial. Additional Information

• This is a Full-Time Perm role for 37.5 hours per week.
• The role is a hybrid position that will require travel in the UK including to the UKHQ Finance Department in Sandy Bedfordshire, and to attend meetings in the support of your team, department and directorate.
