Senior Development Officer

JOB DESCRIPTION

Role:The Senior Development Officer ​plays an integral role within the Development Team at Forces Employment Charity (FEC). You will work with the Head of Development to produce high quality, bespoke proposals, and reports to demonstrate impact and outcomes to help drive the delivery of FEC across the UK. You will also work within the team to research and identify new fundraising opportunities from trusts, foundations and companies and convert these into long term business relationships.

This position provides a full-time, permanent contract with hybrid working hours, consisting of a 35-hour week. The role allows for hybrid work, including remote work from home, with one day per month at our head office in London.

Principle Responsibilities:
​

• To work closely with the Head of Development to research and identify new opportunities.
• Develop, prepare, and submit high quality funding applications, acting as bid writing SME.
• Peer Review support to mentor other team members.
• Work with Head of Development to increase the accuracy of our Salesforce data, resulting in data dashboards suitable to the reporting needs of our funders.
• Collaborate with Senior Fundraising Officer and Senior F&R Officer to implement a team strategy and support a lean process of reporting.
• Work with Senior Finance & Reporting Officer to report impact to our funders in line in the funding requirements.
• To work closely with Head of Development to develop and implement our fundraising strategy.
• Represent the organisation at research based events, developing our understanding and enhancing our delivery.
• Identify new opportunities and working with the team to covert these to applications and funding.
• Lead on individual Giving Strategy, working with Head of Development and Senior Fundraising Officer to expand opportunities.
• Any other relevant duties at the discretion of management.

The Senior Finance Officer will sit at the heart of our Operations Team, reporting to the Head of Operations and the Co-CEOs and playing a crucial function in ensuring the efficient day-to-day management of the organisation’s financial functions.

This will include all day-to-day management of our financial systems and banking, including our accountancy software (Quickbooks) and our internal financial spreadsheets. This involves recording and tracking the income expected from funders, processing invoices and payments, preparing payroll and producing monthly reconciliations and termly budgets. You will also work with our teams to ensure compliance with our financial policies, process expenses and work with our external accountants each year to provide the information needed for our accounts.

You will also research, advise and steer on both necessary changes to our processes, policies and procedures and standalone project work which may involve tasks such as reviewing our pensions processes or any savings and investments. You will understand and enjoy the challenge that working at a charity with multiple complex funding streams brings.

You will have experience of similar work, ideally in the charity sector and will be familiar with the use of both accountancy software and managing cashflows and budgets using Excel. You will have excellent communication and people skills as well as a proactive approach to problem solving and be methodical with a very keen attention to detail.

Job Description

Communications:     

• Develop, contribute to and implement impact-driven and strategic communications campaigns that build Kineara’s fundraising capacity and raise awareness of the issues
• Develop brand identity for Kineara’s new charitable arm, ensuring it is consistent across all activities in the organisation, while maintaining Kineara’s overall ‘look and feel’ to ensure coherence in branding, colours, messaging, style and approach.
• Oversee the creation, development, distribution of compelling, impact-driven story-telling about Kineara’s work and beneficiaries using interviews, blogs, case studies, etc.
• Use a range of platforms to distribute print and electronic content including, but not limited to, newsletters, brochures, leaflets, posters reports, e-newsletters, and Kineara’s website
• Work closely with IT and business managers to ensure smooth running of internal communications

About the Youth Endowment Fund 

We’re here to prevent children and young people becoming involved in violence. We do this by finding out what works and building a movement to put this knowledge into practice. 

In recent years violent crime has risen significantly. Homicides, assaults, robberies and offences involving weapons have all seen sustained growth. We have also seen large increases in violent crime involving children and young people. This is a tragedy. Every child captured in these numbers is an important member of our community and society has a duty to protect them. 

The Youth Endowment Fund (YEF) is a charity with a £200m endowment and a mission that matters. We exist to prevent children and young people becoming involved in violence. We do this by funding great initiatives, finding what works and working for change – scaling up and spreading the practices that make a difference.

This role and why it’s important 

It's critical to our mission that we understand how and why young people become involved in violence. The YEF’s work combines conducting rigorous evaluations and research studies with hearing directly from young people. It is also important to us that young people are central to the messages we share externally.

Your role involves ensuring that young people’s perspectives are heard and integrated into our work. This includes supporting our Youth Advisory Board (YAB) and helping young people’s voices play a central part in YEFs external communications.

This role also supports the wider team managing grants, contracts and providing general team support.

Key responsibilities: 

1. Youth Advisory Board support: 

• Plan engaging activities for YAB meetings and events. These activities require working some evenings and occasional weekends. 

• Provide support and pastoral care to YAB members, including personal development planning and safeguarding.

• Help recruit YAB members (young people aged 16 –25) through interviews and managing recruitment. 

• Develop and schedule the YAB induction programme for new members. 

• Monitor attendance and engagement of YAB members. 

• Coordinate YAB attendance at external events. 

2. Facilitating Youth Voice in communications: 

• Act as a bridge between the YAB and our external communications team. 

• Work with the communications team to amplify young people's voices on social media. 

• Assist young people in sharing their views and stories through various communication methods.

We seek a Development and Grants Senior Officer to support our funding applications and grant reporting for Blue Ventures’ Indonesia programmes. About IKWRO

IKWRO –Women’s Rights Organisation (IKWRO) is an award-winning charity founded (as the Iranian and Kurdish Women’s Rights Organisation) in 2002. IKWRO is a registered charity which provides advice and support to Middle Eastern, North African and Afghan women and girls living in the UK, who have experienced, or are at risk of all forms of “honour” based abuse, including; forced marriage, child marriage and female genital mutilation (FGM), or domestic abuse.

We work with women and girls of all ages, including lesbian women, bisexual women and trans women. We offer services in Kurdish, Farsi, Arabic, Dari, Pashto, Turkish and English. IKWRO offers free advice, advocacy and counselling services and operates a refuge which provides safe accommodation and specialist support to single women at risk of “honour” based abuse, forced marriage and domestic abuse.

IKWRO also provides training for women and girls to help them understand their rights in the UK. In partnership with other organisations, we assist survivors of abuse with accessing English language classes and education, training and employment opportunities.

As well as supporting women and girls directly, we offer advice and training for professionals from the statutory and voluntary sectors, to better understand the needs of the women and girls we represent, the types of abuse they experience and to provide best practice prevention and support services.

Purpose of Job

The Fundraising Officer will work as part of the Fundraising and Marketing team and will be responsible for:

• Nurturing relationships with existing and prospective donors

• Sustaining and developing our group of individual and community-based supporters.

Brain Research UK (BRUK) funds world-class research to discover the causes, develop new treatments and improve the lives of all those who are affected by neurological conditions.

We receive no government funding and it is only thanks to the generosity of our supporters that vital life changing, life-saving neurological research can be funded.

We are a well-established charity that has recently launched a new strategy to accelerate the progress and funding of neurological research.  This is a new role.  As a small and ambitious charity, we are seeking someone who is keen to join a small growing team and develop their skills and career within a vibrant, positive organisation.

The role

Reporting to the Events and Community Fundraising Manager, you will play a key role as part of the Fundraising Team by providing the highest levels of fundraising and event administration support to ensure the provision of seamless, excellent supporter care and assistance to our supporters.  Specific fundraising streams will include, but not be limited to, London Marathon, Other Runs and Challenges, Community Fundraising, Special Events and other streams as needed.

Whilst this role is primarily providing administrative and stewardship support for fundraising and event activities, there will be opportunities to be involved with all other aspects of the charity and the development of future fundraising initiatives and events.

The successful candidate will need to be a good team player, able to work independently; flexible; hard working and prepared to play an enthusiastic role in helping to deliver excellent supporter care and increased fundraising income. Responsibilities

In this position you will:

· Be a primary contact point for our London Marathon runners to provide excellent customer care and increase fundraising potential

· Answer general public and supporter enquiries that come in by telephone, email, social media and WhatsApp groups and mail in a way that makes them feel important and valued regardless of the nature of their enquiry

· Assist with the processing of all income (cash, cheques, online platform donations)  correctly into the Donorfy database, and thank or pass to relevant team members for thanking in a timely manner

· Record as necessary enquiries, correspondence and responses on our Donorfy database

· Be a primary point of contact for our Challenge Event fundraisers.  Build excellent relationships with them and provide materials and support, liaising before, during and following their activity/event as needed

· To work with the team to provide support for key fundraising activities such as the London Marathon and other challenge and running events.  This will include assisting with event administration, proactively making telephone calls in response to applications for places in London Marathon and to encourage fundraising, answering telephone calls, responding to emails WhatsApp and Facebook messages, thanking participants, sending materials to participants and updating records on Donorfy

· Monitoring Social Media and assisting with providing content for these channels/platforms

· Communications support: this may include contributing content for appeals, website and enewsletters and will include monitoring stewardship schedules and deadlines where needed

· Act as liaison for BRUK’s administration where needed with our fulfilment house and/or other suppliers

The Youth Endowment Fund (YEF) is a charity with a £200m endowment and a mission that matters. We exist to prevent children becoming involved in violence. We do this by funding great initiatives, leading cutting-edge research and working for change - scaling up and spreading the practices that make a difference. 

The Chief Operating Officer (COO) has a critical role in ensuring we succeed in this work. You have a key leadership role in overseeing the overall health of the Fund in partnership with the Executive Director. The role oversees our finances, people management and – for the right candidate –much of our grant-making and project management. 

Key responsibilities 

You’ll lead on key organisational governance processes and ensure the Fund makes wise decisions, by:  

• Being a leading member of our Directors’ team, overseeing all elements of the Fund’s work.

• Ensuring that the Fund operates as efficiently and effectively as possible by prioritising the right activities and matching resources to deliver on our mission.

• Ensuring we have the right long, medium and short-term financial plans in place and that we maintain close control over our financial decisions and spend. 

• Informing our Board and our Risk and Audit Committee on our financial performance and risk.

• Ensuring the Fund’s investments are well managed through supporting the Endowment Investment Committee (this does not require investment experience). 

• Managing our Grants and Evaluation Committee (this decides which evaluations we should fund) and ensuring it operates effectively. 

• Ensuring that any ambiguities in the organisation are identified and removed. 

You make sure that the Fund has the people, tools and resources in place to excel. This will require us to:  

• Hire, develop and inspire the very best people: Managing our Head of People, you will ensure that we hire the best possible staff, compensate them appropriately, provide necessary and effective training, maintain a strong focus on staff well-being, manage and develop staff effectively and address poor performance when required. 

• Provide staff with the tools they need to perform: Managing our Head of Grant Operations, you will ensure that we have the tools we need to deliver, including management information, databases, systems and processes and office facilities. 

• Track performance: Track performance against our goals efficiently and effectively, championing a system of accountability and action to review, identify and empower the right people to act on delivering according to the plan. 

Working with colleagues, you’ll ensure we award grants, manage grantees and oversee evaluations efficiently and effectively. This will require us to: 

• Make excellent decisions about our grants: Working with – and potentially managing1 - the Assistant Director for Programmes, Impact and Partnerships, you will help to ensure that our processes for assessing funding applications achieve our organisational priorities for evidence generation. This requires you to understand what partners are trying to do, whether it’s likely to work, whether it will help us build an accessible and trusted body of knowledge, and whether we can build on it to make long-term change happen. 

• Evaluate our programmes: Working with - and potentially managing - the Assistant Director of Evaluation, you will help to ensure that we select and partner with high-quality evaluators to understand how well different activities work.

• Ensuring the team maintains effective monitoring processes: Working with your team, you will develop the necessary skills, processes and decision-making processes to identify when things aren’t going to plan and respond accordingly.

• Build strong relationships with your external partners: You and your team will build strong, trusting relationships with the projects the YEF funds and the evaluators that we work with. Your team will be known for being attentive yet assertive and measured and efficient in the reporting information we expect. You will become well connected in the sectors that we are working in.

• Identify opportunities to scale up projects: You will be proactive in identifying projects that would benefit from capacity development support or that may be ready to scale up their work, collaborating with Impetus to deliver on this.

Person specification 

• You are excellent at leading on finance in an organisation: You find it easy and straightforward to develop and oversee, large organisational budgets and ensure timely preparation of management accounts. You’re excellent at financial forecasting and understand how to make judgements and recommendations based on future scenario planning. You have experience reporting to Boards on financial performance and health, and leading on organisational external audits.

• You are strategic about finance: You’ve got real skill in distilling complex financial information into simple, easy to understand reports and presentations that enable good decision-making. You see your knowledge of finance as a way to serve Director-level colleagues with overall decision-making. You also understand how to navigate competing priorities and how to calculate and articulate risk and reward, knowing few decisions are straightforward.

• You get teams to use data well: You understand that accurate data and excellent management information tools enable good decision-making. You understand how management information databases (like Salesforce) work and would be able to maintain and build a culture of recording data and maintaining data quality within big teams. Ideally, you have experience working directly with Salesforce.

About the Youth Endowment Fund 

We’re here to prevent children from becoming involved in violence. We do this by finding out what works and building a movement to change things.  

In recent years, violent crime involving children has increased. This is a tragedy. Every child is an important member of our community and society has a duty to protect them.

The Youth Endowment Fund (YEF) is a charity with a £200m endowment that exists to reverse this trend. We will achieve this by finding out what works to prevent youth violence and building a movement to put this knowledge into practice. We do this by funding, evaluating and then spreading the very best work on reducing youth violence across England and Wales. 

Central to this is the evaluation team.  The team is responsible for commissioning and monitoring complex and rigorous impact evaluations from experts in the field.

The Senior Evaluation Manager will play a key role in supporting the Assistant Director of Evaluation to lead elements of evaluation work. The post holder will also lead a team of two Evaluation Managers, ensuring they have the support to deliver a portfolio of evaluation projects. 

Key responsibilities 

The core of your job is to ensure that we are excellent at evaluation, so we can find out the best ways to prevent children and young people from becoming involved in violence. 

Evaluation 

Working with the Head of Evaluation the post holder will: 

• Implement the processes to assess the quality of evidence presented in funding applications and provide funding recommendations to the Grants and Evaluation Committee. 

• Shape the evaluation approach for individual grant rounds, including leading on this for a small number of rounds. 

• Provide technical expertise on evaluation to the team and lead the development of YEF’s thinking on one or more areas of evaluation. 

• Lead the delivery of YEF’s evaluation work, designing, commissioning and managing complex and large-scale evaluations. 

• Be responsible for YEF’s evaluation policies and reporting templates, ensuring they remain consistent and fit for purpose. 

• Be responsible for the ongoing development of YEF’s commissioning guidance. 

Team management 

The post holder will likely lead the recruitment, management and development of a team of Evaluation Officers and will: 

• Ensure they have the knowledge, skills and support to carry out their work effectively. 

• Provide regular feedback and coaching on written outputs. 

• Supervise and project manage the team’s evaluation work, providing quality assurance and monitoring of progress against project plans and project budgets. 

Collaborative working 

The post holder will contribute to the wider YEF team and will: 

• Be accountable to YEF’s Fund Leadership Team for the delivery of evaluations, making sure they are on time and on budget, including reporting on risks and issues. 

• Work closely with colleagues across YEF and specifically the Programme team. 

• Ensure high-quality evidence is at the heart of all YEF activity and that the evidence we produce is communicated in a clear and accessible way which will drive sustainable change. 

• Support the management of YEF’s panel of evaluators and expert panel.

The post holder may be involved in other elements of YEF's projects, working with senior colleagues to commission, scope and deliver projects. 

About you 

You are this sort of person:

• You have quantitative analysis skills including experience of using advanced analytical software such as R, Stata or SPSS. 

• You have significant experience in carrying out or commissioning research including designing all aspects of the research and managing external contractors.  This may be in academia, government or a related sector. 

• You have strong relationship management skills. You are comfortable working with a wide range of people, including senior academics and other research experts, children and their families, practitioners, and policy makers. You’re able to provide constructive challenge when required.

The Consortium for Street Children (CSC) is the only global organisation dedicated solely to achieving positive change for street children worldwide, working with 200+ members in 111 countries. With 30 years’ experience and a global network, CSC has unparalleled knowledge and expertise on street children, their lives, and the solutions to the problems they face. Together with its members and partners, CSC advocates for the rights of street children from the streets to the corridors of power. It works to transform children’s lives on the streets through strengthening street social work practice, while also working with States and communities so that they meet their legal obligations to street-connected children as set out in the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) and the authoritative guidance provided in the CRC General Comment 21.

CSC is dedicated to ensuring that global policy commitments are translated into local action, leading to sustainable positive change for children in street situations. CSC is regarded as an expert in the sector and is judged to ‘punch above its weight’ relative to its size.

Purpose of role

CSC is seeking to recruit a new CEO who will lead, empower, and mobilise the organisation and its support to its network members, whilst securing sustainable funding and investment so CSC can deliver its mission. The CEO will be supported by a passionate and talented team of staff, an experienced Senior Management Team, and a fully supportive, engaged, and inspired Board of Trustees.

Primary responsibilities

The job holder will have the following key responsibilities:

Strategic planning and priority setting

· Provide leadership and guidance in the delivery of CSC’s 2024-2029 Strategy, defining priorities to secure sustainable funding and implement the organisation’s goals.

Resource mobilisation and sustainability

• As ‘chief fundraiser’ for the organisation, take the lead in strengthening the organisation’s fundraising strategy and income generation. Be actively involved in working with the staff team to bring in new income (restricted and unrestricted) by conceptualising the presentation of programme, advocacy, policy, and research work and developing customised approaches to donors. Ensure sustainable and diverse sources of income in the face of the current challenging fundraising environment.
• Work with our Development Board and other Trustees to engage with philanthropic and corporate foundations and high net worth individuals globally, attracting new donors and continuing to grow the organisation’s partnership base and international networks.
• Develop and maintain strong positive relationships with donors (United Nations agencies, foundations, multi-laterals, bi-laterals, corporate sector, and individuals) and partners to cultivate support for CSC through appropriate presence and communication.

Building CSC’s profile

• Protect and further strengthen CSC’s external brand, profile, and credibility as a thought leader in the field of child rights and child protection in relation to street connected children.
• Act as a champion and advocate for the organisation by representing the work of CSC and its positions at the highest levels externally and across the political spectrum and globally, including with the United Nations entities and agencies, regional bodies, national governments, and partners.
• Act as CSC’s key spokesperson publicly by writing, speaking and social media posting on issues related to the rights of street connected children.
• Support the ongoing development and implementation of a communication strategy to raise the profile of CSC as the global major leader on issues related to street connected children.
• Oversee clear, targeted, engaging, and inspirational communications on all platforms, targeted at segmented audiences (funders and potential funders, influencers, decision makers, potential allies, and network members) in line with CSC’s core values and positions.

Organisation and programme management

• Manage the work of CSC to ensure an effective organisation that is operating in line with its vision, aim and objectives.
• Ensure supportive staff development and good practice to maintain a positive working environment with regular performance appraisals and professional development plans.
• Work in partnership with the experienced programme staff in delivering the programme strategy. Provide supportive guidance to the team, including robust programme planning, measurement and evaluation, and reporting processes. Support the team in conceptualising the programmes to achieve new and sustainable funding.

Finance and operations

• Oversee and ensure CSC’s fiscal soundness and strength, effective operational and financial management, consolidating financial stability, efficiency, and impact.
• Oversee monthly management accounts, carefully balancing restricted donor funding and project delivery with a balanced budget for unrestricted funded activity.
• Ensure proper financial and procurement procedures are adhered to, in order to meet the highest standards of international donors, UK auditors and the UK Charity Commission.
• Oversee processes to ensure strong negotiations and contracting of all our restricted funded projects, including robust due diligence processes for our subgrantees and donor compliance with respect to cost recovery and other requirements.

Governance

• Establish and maintain a strong working relationship with the Board.
• Ensure the Board is fully supported in carrying out its role and responsibilities and that CSC is fully compliant with UK Charity Commission guidelines, Fundraising Regulator, and good practice for non-profits.
• Ensure the preparation and presentation of an annual workplan and budget for review and approval by the Board and present periodic updates of their implementation as well as of the overall financial status of the organisation.
• Work with the independent Board of Directors in the USA, providing information and assistance so that they can fulfil their potential at establishing a solid funding and advocacy base in the US for our mutual global aim of ensuring the respect, protection, and fulfilment of the rights of street children.

Profile

Experience and skillset

• A senior and experienced people leader, with a significant and demonstrable track record in an NGO or public body, of successfully building and maintaining high performing teams and a culture of equality, diversity, and inclusion.
• Strong financial acumen with experience of income generation.
• A proven record in the cultivation of donors and success in raising funds in the child rights or human rights sector, including from foundations, bilaterals, multilaterals, corporates, and high-net-worth-individuals.
• Demonstrated experience and success in global partnership building, convening stakeholders with diverse cultural backgrounds and driving an organisation to act as a catalyst for social change.
• A skilled influencer with strong communication (oral and written) and ambassadorial skills.
• Experience of effective advocacy with both internal and external audiences.

With mental health in the spotlight, this is a key time for us to make a significant impact on young people’s mental health and expand our audience of young people, adults and professionals. As our organisation and reach grows we are now looking for an enthusiastic Senior Trusts & Grants Officer to join our brilliant team.

A lot of what we do is writing applications and reports for funders that need to be written in a way that tells a compelling story about our work, as well as being factually accurate and concise. We deal directly with our fantastic supporters who fund some of our key projects, as well as researching and contacting potential new ones.

As Senior Trusts and Grants Officer, your primary priority is to generate multi-year income for YoungMinds specifically from Trusts, Foundations and occasional Government funding i.e statutory sources.

This role is vital in implementing our vision to create a step change in YoungMinds’ fundraising.

Moving from a funder-led approach to engaging all supporters as part of our movement, where effective fundraising builds relationships and becomes an essential part of achieving our charitable objectives, not just funding them.

The successful candidate will have:

• experience of successful multiyear applications for funding from Trusts and other grant-making bodies
• experience of using databases for effective fundraising and supporter retention
• an ability to develop and maintain relationships with a range of audiences
• an ability to pitch/make the ask for funding by phone, face-to-face and/or with a written proposal
• knowledge of the UK voluntary sector, funding sources and fundraising law and methods
• understanding and awareness of AJEDI (Anti racism, Justice, Equality, Diversity and Inclusion)
