​Main purpose of the post 

We are seeking to appoint a Bids Manager with experience in managing the development and submissions process for successful research bids, to be part of a wider team that spearheads RUSI’s research fundraising efforts. Reporting to the Director, Research Business Development, the successful candidate will lead the process for preparing high-value bids, including drafting sections of the narrative and reviewing budgets, and be responsible for building central resources to improve and facilitate effective business development operations. This is a highly collaborative role that involves building very strong internal relationships at all levels of the organisation and with external stakeholders and skilfully managing competing priorities, personalities, and deadlines. We are seeking a team player with a pragmatic and positive attitude, who will enjoy learning about RUSI’s research areas and building stronger systems and processes to help us to make Business Development more efficient and successful.

​Key tasks 

• For UK Government, US Government, EU and Canadian Government bids, and bids over £100,000 value to RUSI:

• End-to-end project management of high-quality bids, including tender responses, funding applications and requests to participate. 

• Manage internal and external communications to ensure that the RUSI team, and partners, are aware of evaluation criteria, key themes, deadlines, and other critical information. Agree roles, responsibilities and timelines between key stakeholders.

• Compile and arrange high-quality and compelling bid language working with subject matter experts, draft responses to institutional questions, and offer quality assurance ahead of submission. 

• Review project budgets to be signed off by RUSI’s COO, ensuring that they are prepared consistently and in line with RUSI policies and funder requirements, working with RUSI research teams to achieve this. 

• Serve as the institutional point of contact for the key funders listed above – attend Early Market Engagements/supplier events, funder events, webinars, to ensure you are up to date on their priorities and RUSI is competitive with our bids. Maintain a centralised database and disseminate up-to-date information on each funder’s practices, key dates, preferences, upcoming opportunities etc. 

• For all other bids, review budgets for accuracy, competitiveness and to ensure costs are in line with RUSI’s policies and previous submissions, and, once finalised, seek approval from the COO.

• Work with the Director for Research Business Development, Research Directors and the Deputy Director General to identify and cultivate new relationships within each of the key funders, ensuring that we have good awareness of upcoming plans, expectations and priorities.

• Facilitate links to partner organisations (primes) and build and manage consortia-based relationships to ensure we have oversight of upcoming opportunities and are able to negotiate successful partnerships.

• Ensure use of best practice across research groups in our approach to bids and budgets, and that key documents, outcomes, research impact, and decisions are saved centrally for future use.

• With support from the BD team, develop and execute a plan to inform, train and mentor research and central services colleagues on best practice for bids, including a focus on wider business awareness.

• Respond to due diligence requests received by RUSI from research funders, ensure we have a central database of up-to-date policies and documents required to respond successfully and quickly. 

• Work with the Business Development team to build organisational systems and processes for effective BD, collaborate with BD colleagues to share feedback and ideas, support each other, and develop central projects to improve BD across the organisation. 

• Attend Business Development meetings with research groups and build strong relationships with project managers and project officers, capturing feedback and seeking input to BD processes and practices. 

• Manage the process for new funder approvals with the Deputy Director General. 

• Be a member of RUSI’s Research Committee and report on bid statuses and other relevant information when needed.

​Essential Skills and Experience:  

• An extensive track record of submitting high-quality research project proposals to the funders listed above, with a demonstrable success rate. 

• Able to produce clear, accurate and insightful written output, setting high standards and enhancing our external reputation through the production of strong bids. 

• Skilled at dealing with high-pressured situations with sensitivity and in a calm manner. 

• A track record of producing and reviewing small, medium, and large project budgets, often with specific funder requirements, and an understanding of how to develop competitive financial bids.

• Strong knowledge and awareness of common requirements for bid submissions, including statements on duty of care, quality assurance, supply chain management, gender, and diversity, equity, and inclusion. 

• Outstanding time management skills and a willingness to work flexibly, juggling shifting priorities and competing deadlines, while managing people’s expectations effectively with the support of the Director of Research Business Development.

• A good understanding of contractual matters and experience in resolving them. 

• Experience in training colleagues on best practice and developing associated materials. 

• Strong IT and Microsoft skills (Excel, Word, Outlook, and PowerPoint) 

• Project management certification such as Prince 2.

Bids Manager 

Summary 

Reports to: Director Research Business Development​ 

Team: Business Development 

Salary range: £45,000-55,000 per annum (depending on skills and experience). 

Location: London, Hybrid (min. two days a week) 

Contract: Full-time Permanent  

Hours: Part-time, 3 days per week (8 hours within the hours of 9 am to 6 pm with 1 hour’s lunch break) + one day of weekend support hub per month

Working days: Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays (and one weekend day a month)

Location: Mostly office-based with once-a-month offsite location (office, occasional home and offsite) Office is based in the City of London near Bank station

The successful candidate will lead strategic, high-impact external communications across the organisation. • Lead strategic communications: Lead the strategic evolution of our global communications as a critical component of our strategies to make change happen. • Digital action platform and technology: Work with the Web Content and Digital Officer to manage the development of the Resource Centre’s leading multi-functional digital platform, and our substantial data as compelling evidence. Develop an understanding of the organisation’s target audiences and ensure we deliver features that effectively support them to effectively organise and present their research data and promote human rights in business.
• Programme design and fundraising: Work with our development (fundraising) team and programme leads to ensure communications, and digital technology work is built into project design and budget, and that funders’ information needs are well-served.

Key competencies and attributes

Strategic communication: At least 5 years’ experience delivering top class communications and expert understanding of how strategic communications deliver change. Demonstrable experience in strategy design and execution. Sharp news sense and editorial judgement; strong grasp of the power of social media to make change happen; and a global perspective to communications.

People manager: At least 3 years’ experience in line management. Experience in nurturing and sustaining a high performing team that thrives in a diverse, and global context. Demonstrable success in supporting project teams to deploy communications strategically for impact.

Project manager: Track record of leading and/or implementing complex communications projects including planning, execution, and evaluation. Demonstratable success planning communications for a busy organisation working closely with allies.

The Corporate Partnerships Lead will lead, manage and develop the team of 7 raising c.£4m pa, personally spearheading the new business strategy and major approaches.

The Philanthropy & Events Executive will support our Philanthropy Lead and Managing Director to effectively manage existing match funding partner (“Champion”)  relationships, and help to develop new Champion relationships. You will support with Champion onboarding, stewarding and reporting as well as research, prospecting, and business development activities.  You will also manage events for high-value supporters, and play a key role in helping us grow the number of Champions through our events, such as our annual Big Give Christmas Party and Philanthropy Lunches.

IPD operates in 17 African and Asian countries. PSK is a diverse and motivated group of 20+ technical specialists and advisors, passionate about bringing sustainable WASH to the world's poorest and most marginalised people. PSK leads and supports organisation-wide programme learning and knowledge management, collating and disseminating programme knowledge and facilitating knowledge exchange. The team provides technical advisory expertise and fosters and supports internal and external programme and technical partnerships and networks. The team also leads on developing normative programme documents and standards and advise and support the delivery of a programme capacity enhancement strategy. PSK collaborates with many functions across the organisation including policy, advocacy, campaigns, fundraising, communications, as well as with WaterAid partners and collaborators.

About the Role:
The Knowledge Management and Learning Senior Advisor drives the design and implementation of WaterAid's organisational programme learning and knowledge management strategy. The senior advisor leads the development of knowledge management tools, contribute to organisational processes for collating and disseminating program knowledge, and the evolution of knowledge exchange mechanisms. Additionally, lead the development of the internal programme and policy knowledge library, ensuring comprehensive access and collaborating on strategic knowledge communications.

The Senior advisor reports into the Knowledge Management and Learning Senior Manager and their key accountabilities will be:

Co-lead Programme Learning and knowledge management (approximately 50% of time)

• Co-lead the design and implementation of an organisational programme learning and knowledge management strategy (in alignment with the organisational research agenda led by GPAC and supported by PMER processes).
• Lead the development and implementation of knowledge management and learning strategies and tools to capture, organise, and disseminate programme learning within the organisation and externally
• Co-lead the development of organisational mechanisms for knowledge exchange and evolution of our approaches.

Finance and operations manager – Job Description 

We are seeking a thoughtful, compassionate, and experienced finance and operations manager.  This is a new role in an expanding team that will contribute to the senior leadership of the organisation and be responsible for overseeing day-to-day operations of the charity, with a focus on financial management.  
Our new Finance and Operations Manager will work closely with the CEO to set and manage the organisation’s strategic plan, drive strategic initiatives, manage resources, and foster a positive and reflective workplace culture. 

Key Responsibilities 

1. Leadership and Team Management  

• Embody the values of The Magpie Project and support the CEO to maintain the core vision and principles of the organisation in all its activities. 

• Support the CEO in overseeing the day-to-day activities of the charity, including deputising for her when appropriate.

Programme Leadership

• Deliver world class content to reflect African excellence drawing on the best creative minds and experts across multiple genres – from contemporary arts to literature and fiction; science and history; geo-politics and climate change; equalities and democracy and more.
• Deliver original content that has variety, breadth, and depth, identifying the most appropriate structure for building relationships with partners, commissioning new work, contracting artists, identifying thought leadership opportunities and utilising a wide range of formats – live and digital - to implement ideas.
• Draw on the expertise within the team, their networks and creative content, convening an holistic programme in line with TAC’s strategic priorities, income generation priorities and brand.
• Develop and implement TAC’s Elimu Education Programme, fostering relevant relationships with educational institutes from primary to tertiary levels across the UK and beyond, and co-creating programmes of activity.
• Oversee the development, implementation, monitoring and reporting of any contracted work that delivers programmes of activities in the UK and abroad,
• Lead on developing, nurturing and administering relationships with strategic partners including the TAC Global Network of Affiliate Organisations.
• Oversee the work of the Young Africa Centre.

Engagement

• Maintain existing and develop new audiences, identifying programme strands that respond to and anticipate the needs and interests of diverse communities, introducing new ideas, innovative content and inclusive talent pathways.
• Seek out, develop, and sustain networks, stakeholders and partnerships at local, regional and global levels, and explore new ways for the charity to grow and develop at the cutting edge of global ideas
• Identify opportunities to develop The Africa Centre events across the UK and digitally, to reach wider audiences and deepen brand recognition across the year.
• Identify project funding to develop audiences, increase diversity and meet equalities objectives.
• Oversee learning and engagement programmes in the UK.
• Deliver and build upon current UK funded projects and contribute to developing funding bids.
• Oversee the management of TAC’s marketing and communications functions, including our public relations, website and social media accounts, ensuring that they are updated, relevant and archived appropriately.

Impact

• Lead on development and delivery of the organisation’s strategic Monitoring, Evaluation and Impact framework and associated plans and systems
• Develop and delivering TAC’s social purpose agenda, ensuring alignment with our strategic objectives.
• Oversee the development and management of TAC’s archives, be it digital, documental or physical, ensuring that they are catalogued, accessible and available for utilisation as a key resource.

Operational

• Line manage the programme, education and engagement team(s), recruiting, as necessary, skilled persons to deliver TAC programmes.
• Manage the delivery of contracts and partnership collaborative efforts, ensuring that contracting is delivered to the highest standards at all times to protect the reputation and financial standing of the charity and to meet contractor’s expectations.
• Identify potential funders relevant to area and contribute to writing business plans demonstrating a seamless relationship between content, programmes, events, audiences, and the core business activities
• Support the work of the Director of Development Team in developing and delivering the fundraising strategy and the Director of Finance & Operations on delivering TAC financial plans

Governance & Compliance

• Write reports for the board as and when required by the CEO in a timely and appropriate manner
• Work with the Director of Finance & Ops to ensure the financial health and sustainability of the charity in delegated budget area(s), adhere to TAC Financial Regulations and Procurement Policy.
• Ensure that all artist contracting is undertaken within TAC procurements and contracting policies observing all other required policies and statutory guidelines e.g., Equalities, Safeguarding, Health and Safety, Intellectual Property, GDPR, Finance and Procurements etc.
• Maintain accurate records on The Africa Centre’s document management system and databases.
• Respond to general enquiries by email or telephone, manage own workload and maintain an online diary, using agreed TAC systems.
• To promote and comply with current legislation including The Africa Centre policies on Equality and Diversity and Health & Safety, Safeguarding, in the delivery of services and the
• Uphold the TAC brand and reputation

Leadership

• Be a vital, collegiate member of the TAC Senior leadership team,
• Develop and nurture relationships with the TAC Board, managing relevant committees and reporting to the Board and sub-committees as required.
• Represent the organisation at appropriate internal and external events and meetings, locally, regionally and globally.

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

Essential

• A clearly-evidenced long-standing passion for Africa and people of African Descent
• 3 - 5 years working at a senior level in a similar role
• Excellent Programme Management experience with excellent budget management skills
• Excellent communication and networking skills, adept at effectively engaging people across a range of settings – from school children to Prime Ministers and Presidents;
• Educated to degree level of equivalent (relevant subject area)
• Team player, able to work cross disciplinary with artists, experts, academics, key stakeholders, and audiences in a programming function working with diverse audiences
• Specialist knowledge of audience development gained through 3 years’ experience
• Agile approach to work, recognising the limitations and challenges of running a small charitable organisation and willingness to work flexibly to get things done, apply effort and integrity at all times. Regular weekend and evening work will be required.
• Experience of working with an operations team to deliver events (production, tech requirements, artist management)
• Experience of delivering to funder obligations (Trusts and Foundations/Public and Private Funding) • Excellent network in publishing; cultural and creative sector; or other relevant sectors
• Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite, Google Docs, et al.

Work Arrangements

Location: The Africa Centre office, London. Occasional remote working is encouraged. The post-holder will be required to be on location in London for relevant activities. Some international travel will be required.

About the Team
The Partnership Development Team is comprised of partnership experts across a portfolio of institutional partners. The team seeks to deliver exceptional global partnerships, optimising both funding and influence. The team works closely with colleagues from across the Global Programmes and Policy, Advocacy & Campaigns Division, other Save the Children members and with Save the Children International (SCI) country and regional teams to deliver on our partnership objectives. The team is at the forefront of driving the institutional partnership agenda and approach for both Save the Children UK (SCUK) and the Save the Children global movement, ensuring Save the Children is the partner of choice.

About the role
As the Account Manager you will contribute to and effectively support our global programme partnerships work, to achieve Save the Children's strategic objectives.

The focus of the role will include extending Save the Children's relationships with development banks plus new initiatives such as impact investment and results-based project funding. You will support the Partnership Managers on a varied portfolio of cross-Save the Children partnerships as well as supporting with the management of cross Save the Children partnership management.  

You will support and liaise with a network of internal and external stakeholders to optimise our engagement with key partners, in pursuit of specific partnership opportunities.

 In this role, you will: 

• Ensure a broad-ranging and inclusive partnerships. This includes:
  • Contributing to the implementation of SCUK's overall institutional partnerships strategy.
  • Management of information and status of relationships/financing to keep our leadership (CEO, Executive Directors) up-to-date with our partnerships.
  • Supporting the organisation to continually build strategic understanding of partners and any evolving trends that may impact the relationship.
  • Representing Save the Children with the appropriate partner contacts and providing strong support to colleagues in their external engagement (country, regional and HQ levels).
  • Exploring new avenues of collaboration and new funding modalities to maximise income and return on investment.
  • Secure support from colleagues from across the organisation to contribute to our engagement with our regular and new accounts
• Ensure increased quality and consistency in the design, delivery and reporting of all projects/awards across the account and SCI. This includes:
  • Supporting the wider account team on the development and delivery of donor specific capacity building plans.
  • Working closely with the Donor Compliance team to identify risks, mitigating measures and setting adequate monitoring mechanisms to support wider award management processes.
  • Developing common standard approaches to quality and compliance across the account. Ensuring partner regulations and expectations are well understood among parties involved.
  • Engaging with account members, where necessary, and SCI in generating learning and best practices.
  • Ensuring strong knowledge management systems are in place.
• Collaborate with team members to develop and embed our partnership and management approach, to maximise the benefit of the team's work to the wider organisation and movement.
