Crossness Pumping Station (overseen by the Crossness Engines Trust) is a unique and valuable museum of UK and world reknown telling the history of how the ambitious management of sewage transformed London as a city of growth and innovation in the 1860s and helped eradicate cholera. Preserved and restored by a group of enthusiasts since 1987, we are now entering a second phase of major restoration and we need visionary trustees who can help us achieve it.

This role is one of three we have created for experts in their field to help us implement a major programme over the next 5-10 years. It really is your chance to be part of our history!

As well as the usual trustee roles (outlined in the role description attached) the specific skills needed for this role include:

Role Objectives

• Acting as lead expert on the Board in relation to fundraising (eg grant funding, legacy funding, onsite donations, but not commercial trading/visitor charges).
• Advising on good practice and regulatory and policy issues in charity fundraising.
• Identifying future fundraising prospects and working with volunteers to achieve these.

Responsibilities

• Work with a volunteer lead/team on identifying future funding sources from grant-making bodies.
• Develop a fundraising strategy with volunteers.
• Develop corporate fundraising targets with other trustees.
• Investigate legacy fundraising and other visitor/member/donor opportunities.

Candidate requirements

 Essential

• Proven success in heritage or similar charity fundraising.
• Good knowledge of the standards required by the Institute of Fundraising.
• Ability to develop fundraising skills in volunteers.
• Good knowledge of relevant stakeholders in the fundraising community.
• Excellent communication skills including with staff and volunteers as well as fellow trustees.
• An understanding of the importance of collaboration and problem-solving.
• Confident and proficient in the use of MS Office 365.
• Commitment to attend board meetings regularly and volunteer for other sub-committees as appropriate.
• Able to devote around 2-3 hours per week on preparing for meetings.
• Treating colleagues with respect and politeness.

Desirable

• Experience in the charity sector.
• Experience as a volunteer in a similar organisation.
• Experience in Digital, Marketing and Finance would also be useful.

WHO ARE WE?

Palmed Academy, the education arm of Palmed UK, is training the next generation of healthcare workers in Gaza. There is an extreme shortage of health workers and limited educational opportunities for medical, dental, and nursing students in Gaza. 

We aim to provide medical, nursing, and dental students with the resources, training, and opportunities to advance their education and become the future healthcare workforce in the Gaza Strip. We do this using a hybrid learning model - an online learning platform supported by international faculty to supplement on-the-ground clinical teaching by local faculty and healthcare workers.

This program is entirely free for the students. It costs about USD 150 / month to produce One Future Healthcare Worker through this program.

OUR IMPACT 

2100 Palestinian medical students are continuing their undergraduate education through GEM’s hybrid model. We have expanded to include nursing and dental  programs. 200 new doctors graduated in Gaza in January 2025, and our first cohort of nurses is set to follow in summer 2025.

Key Responsibilities:

• Develop and implement fundraising strategies to support Palmed Academy's growth and programs.
• Identify and cultivate relationships with potential donors, sponsors, and funding partners.
• Support grant writing and reporting processes.

• Maintain donor database and ensure timely stewardship and communication..
• Develop marketing materials such as brochures, presentations, and donor packs.
• Collaborate with team members to ensure consistent branding and messaging.

Role Overview

We are seeking an experienced and passionate Fundraising Chair to lead our newly established Fundraising Committee. This is a voluntary leadership position that will play a crucial role in securing the financial resources needed to expand our impact and support more young people in their journey to employment.

The successful candidate will be responsible for building and chairing a dedicated fundraising committee, developing strategic fundraising initiatives, and driving our organization's revenue generation efforts to support our mission.

About Shadow to Shine

Shadow to Shine is a dedicated charity committed to supporting young people aged 16-25 into meaningful employment opportunities. Through our programs and initiatives, we help bridge the gap between education and career success for 120+ young people each year, providing vital resources, mentorship, and pathways to sustainable employment.

In our 5 years of running we have delivered over 

50+ programmes for 1130+ young people

300 hours of mentoring

Key Responsibilities

Committee Leadership

• Recruit, build, and lead a volunteer Fundraising Committee of 5-8 committed members

• Chair regular committee meetings and ensure effective governance

• Provide strategic direction and vision for all fundraising activities

• Foster a collaborative and results-oriented committee culture

• Report regularly to the Board of Trustees on fundraising progress and strategy

Fundraising Strategy 

• Develop and implement a comprehensive annual fundraising strategy

• Identify and prioritize diverse revenue streams including grants, corporate partnerships, individual donations, and fundraising events

• Set ambitious yet achievable annual fundraising targets

• Oversee the planning and execution of major fundraising campaigns and events

• Build and maintain relationships with major donors, corporate sponsors, and grant-making organizations

Stakeholder Engagement

(Potential & current donors, community, funders)

• Represent the charity at fundraising events, donor meetings, and community gatherings

• Cultivate long-term relationships with current and prospective supporters

• Work collaboratively with the CEO/Executive Director and Board of Trustees

• Serve as an ambassador for the charity's mission and impact

Governance & Compliance

• Ensure all fundraising activities comply with relevant regulations and charity law

• Maintain high standards of donor stewardship and transparency

• Oversee proper acknowledgment and recognition of supporters

• Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of fundraising initiatives

Essential Experience

• Proven track record in fundraising, business development, or senior leadership roles

• Experience in recruiting and leading volunteer teams or committees

• Strong network of professional and personal contacts

• Excellent communication and presentation skills

• Ability to develop and lead multi-stream fundraising strategies across event corporates and grant channels. 

• Understanding of charity sector regulations and best practices

• Strong understanding of ethical fundraising practices and donor engagement 

Desirable Qualifications

• Previous experience in charity or non-profit fundraising

• Knowledge of grant application processes

• Experience with corporate partnership development

• Background in youth development or employment support

• Professional qualifications in marketing, business, or related fields

Time Commitment

This is a flexible role, requiring approximate 6-8 hours per month, with peaks during campaign period. Meetings are typical held in the evening or virtually, accommodating professional and family commitments. 

• 6-8 hours per month (Once the recruitment of committee is complete this will reduce)

• Monthly Fundraising Committee meetings (1hr)

• Quarterly Board of Trustees meetings for reporting

• Attendance at key fundraising events and donor meetings

• Additional time during major campaign periods

Reporting Structure

The Fundraising Chairman will work closely with the CEO/Executive Director and report to the Board of Trustees. The role involves collaboration with existing staff members and volunteers across all areas of the charity's work.

As a charity we are able to help thousands of cats each year thanks to the generous donations we receive from members of the public. Our fundraising volunteers use their passion for cats and people to raise the vital funds needed to help more cats and kittens in need. As a fundraising volunteer we want to support you to fundraise in whatever way suits you best, whether that’s organising a fundraising event, fundraising online, promoting fundraising activities on social media, completing administration or supporting the development of new fundraising ideas! Whatever your skill set, this could be the role for you!

What we need from you

This is a really flexible role, you can choose what you’d like to get involved with, for example: 

• face-to-face fundraising. Organising or helping with fundraising events, running supermarket collections and fundraising stands, monitoring collection tins 

• online fundraising. Setting up online appeals and writing impactful cat case studies that maximise donations

• marketing. Spreading the word about our fundraising activities, for example on social media and with the local press  

• completing administration. Processing donations, sorting and recording donated goods, completing Gift Aid paperwork

● championing our work. Getting involved with developing new fundraising ideas and increasing community engagement

● photography. Capturing images of cats in care, cats we are helping, events and all things Cats Protection

Time expectation

This is a flexible role that can fit around your other commitments to suit you. You’ll be part of a team raising vital funds while having fun in the process!
