Job description

Main Purpose of the Role

The Head of Fundraising will take a strategic lead and manage a small team of fundraising and communications colleagues to increase income from larger trusts and foundations, corporates and individuals in line with CHASE Africa’s 5-year strategic aims. They will also work closely with the programmes team and our overseas partners to help develop and write strong institutional funding applications.

The ideal candidate will have a track record of securing large gifts and grants from multiple income streams. The Head of Fundraising will also work closely with the Executive Director, programmes team and Finance Manager, and will be a key member of the Senior Management Team, attending trustee board meetings as required.

Background

CHASE Africa is a growing UK-based international NGO working to support rural communities in East Africa. We believe that when people in resource-poor, rural communities are healthy, are able to make informed family planning decisions and live in a sustainable and flourishing natural environment, they are far more likely to have a better quality of life and leave poverty behind.

Since 2012, CHASE Africa has provided over 1 million health and family planning services, supported communities to plant over 200,000 trees and accompanied 9 trusted local partner organisations in Kenya and Uganda to integrate rights-based family planning programmes into their work.

CHASE Africa is a small, relaxed and friendly team, based near Frome in Somerset. We have ambitious plans increase our impact and income over the next 5 years, and are looking for an experienced fundraising professional to help us achieve our aims. The team have developed excellent relationships with a number of UK and overseas trusts, high net-worth individuals and regular donors.

The Head of Fundraising will be responsible for leading the fundraising and communications team. Currently, there are four part-time staff members who report directly to this role (three fundraisers and a Communications and Engagement Coordinator).

Main Responsibilities

Fundraising

  • Manage an effective, motivated fundraising team to achieve or exceed agreed targets.
  • Write and submit proposals to achieve repeat and new funding to ensure income growth in line with organisational strategies.
  • Work with the programmes team and overseas partners to develop and submit competitive larger, and multi-year, grant applications to institutions and trust funds.
  • Ensure a pipeline of opportunities is maintained and developed, using the CRM Donorfy.
  • Ensure excellent reporting and donor stewardship is maintained across the organisation.

Strategy, Planning and Budget Management

  • Lead the fundraising and communications planning process to produce effective strategies which achieve income targets across a range of revenue streams.
  • Produce regular income forecasts and contribute to financial forecasts.
  • Develop and maintain income tracking and evaluation systems.
  • Oversee the fundraising and communications team budget.
  • Strive to develop an organisational culture of full cost recovery in all fundraising activities.

Senior Management

The Head of Fundraising will be a member of CHASE Africa’s Senior Management Team (SMT) and the post-holder will be expected to play a proactive role in the management of the organisation, including contributing to:

  • Organisational strategic planning, budget forecasts and development.
  • Working closely with the Finance Manager, attend monthly finance meetings, and advise the SMT on the availability of funds to support CHASE Africa’s work.
  • Ensuring key policies are adhered to, including data protection and fundraising regulator guidelines.

Staff Management

  • Agree objectives and work plans through regular 1:1 meetings with fundraising and communications team members.
  • Plan and implement personal development plans with team members and undertake annual reviews.
  • Recruit and train new team members as and when required.

Anticipated Skills and Experience

Essential

  • At least 5 years’ experience in a relevant fundraising role.
  • Experience of managing a team.
  • Familiar with the international development sector.
  • Experience in developing and implementing strategy and direction for fundraising work.
  • Proven success in securing six-figure multi-year funding from grant-making organisations.
  • Experience in preparing detailed donor budgets from partners’ project plans, budgets, and reports, and reporting against budgets to donors.
  • Familiarity with using logframes, theory of change, risk analysis and describing value for money.
  • Experience in networking with donors and funders.
  • Experience in use of database systems for logging and reporting.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work co-operatively in a team.
  • Strong written and spoken English.
  • Ability to research, collate and summarise information from a wide range of sources.
  • Responsible and accountable with good time management skills.
  • Right to work in the UK.

Desirable

  • Relevant bachelor’s degree.
  • Experience of working in sub-Saharan Africa.
  • Experience of securing funding from large institutional funders such as DFID/FCDO, EU, Comic Relief, and managing institutional funding contracts.
  • Experience in charity communications and marketing.
  • Experience of writing and producing annual impact reports and other publications.
  • Experience of corporate fundraising.
