Volunteering in the shop

Mary's Living & Giving for Save the Children is unique - a vibrant result of the generous gifts of local individuals and companies being turned around by the skills and passions of volunteer teams, to create a destination retail experience. Selling womenswear, menswear, shoes, and bags to household goods, our shops can be found in the London villages and bring in vital funds for Save the Children.

Our Blackheath Shop Volunteers are in the middle of it all, and there’s plenty to get involved with. You might be sorting and pricing stock, engaging with customers, ringing items through the till, creating fantastic window displays or keeping our shop floor looking organised.

It’s up to you how much you commit. We have volunteers who support for a couple of hours a week and some do more. Many people volunteer either a morning or an afternoon each week - this is something that will be discussed at the selection stage, after you’ve applied.

At St John Ambulance, we are looking to develop our volunteering offer and become an even more integral part of our communities through delivering community first aid and education. 

We need people who have a passion for helping others, care about their communities and want to make a difference, supporting them to become safe and more resilient by sharing your first aid skills and knowledge. As a Community First Aider, you’ll deliver first aid to those in need through local events, as well as provide education to the public so that the ripple effect of First Aid grows.

Through supporting the growth of community partnerships, you will bring people along to our cause, growing our membership and fundraising base and spreading the message that First Aid Saves Lives. 

Through volunteering as a Community First Aider, you’ll get a huge sense of satisfaction and pride delivering an essential service. It’s great for you, great for your community and great for our nation, and it requires only a small commitment of your time. 

We will make sure you will have access to a proper induction to volunteering with SJA and the training you need for the role you take on. We will also provide you with a supportive environment while you are volunteering with us. Information about our volunteer roles are included in the role descriptions. What you can expect from SJA, and what we expect from those who volunteer with us, is included in the volunteer charter.

We meet at Pegasus House in Leicester on Tuesday evenings. There is no requirement to attend every week.

We will be holding selection events on the following dates: 21st/22nd June, 19th/20th July, 23rd/24th August, 20th/21st September.

You will need to attend a Community First Aid course - 2 Days (Typically a Weekend) delivered at Pegasus House in Leicester.

Online learning will be required before a 2 day course will be taking place at the weekend in January

At The Usual Place in Dumfries, we are more than a café; we are a unique, skills academy where the potential of young people with learning disabilities is nurtured, confidence is built, futures are shaped, and an inclusive workforce is created. We have proved time and time again that when young people are given the right support, they don’t just participate in their communities—they enrich them.

This year marks 10 years since The Usual Place first opened, responding directly to young people with additional support needs who asked for opportunities to learn, work, and be part of something meaningful. In that time, we have supported thousands of young people, many of whom would have otherwise been marginalised and unseen.

The Commitment

The Trustee Board generally meets every 6 weeks on a hybrid basis and there is an expectation that trustees will also take opportunities throughout their term to get involved, attend events and meet the young people in the Café.

Deal with financial administration, from annual reports to legacy spending, and ensure accurate volunteer expense payments per policy. Be a signatory on the group's bank accounts.

The skills you need: Previous experience in finance, accountancy, or bookkeeping can be valuable but is not essential. You must be confident with numbers and able to lead the group’s finances, possessing confident computer and email skills and openness to using new systems and digital tools. A commitment to the wider charity’s aims and values is essential, as is the ability to contribute to balanced, collaborative, open, and inclusive decisions with committee and local staff.

After you’ve filled in an application, we will invite you for an informal trial shift. It’s a great opportunity to visit the shop, meet some of our existing volunteers and have a go at some of the tasks that you would be supporting with as a shop volunteer. Hopefully allowing you to get a feel for the role and make sure it’s for you. We also ask for a couple of references (these don’t have to be formal workplace ones, just someone who has known you for over 6 months and isn’t related).

Please note that this is a voluntary, unpaid role, based in the UK. We are unfortunately not able to provide support with visa requests. 

• To offer advice and support to the Trustees and staff regarding the continuous development and

improvement of the charities vision.

• To support the Board to oversee and to ensure appropriate presentation of budgets,

accounts, management accounts and financial statements

• To ensure appropriate presentation of accounts and records, ensuring that financial

resources are spent in accordance with the charity’s policies, good governance, legal and

regulatory requirements.

• Support the Board to monitor the financial viability of the charity

• Creating in conjunction with relevant senior staff sound financial processes and procedures

for the control of the charity’s assets

• Advising on the financial implications of the charity’s strategic plan

• Reviewing the annual accounts are, where applicable, liaising with the charity’s external

accountants to ensure the accounts are compliant with charity policies

• Ensuring that sound financial management is maintained and ensuring expenditure is in line

with the charity’s objects

• Acting as a counter signatory on charity 

Acting as a counter signatory on charity cheques and any applications and receipts of

funding (if necessary or mandated).

At St John Ambulance, we are looking to develop our volunteering offer and become an even more integral part of our communities through delivering community first aid and education. 

We need people who have a passion for helping others, care about their communities and want to make a difference, supporting them to become safe and more resilient by sharing your first aid skills and knowledge. As a Community First Aider, you’ll deliver first aid to those in need through local events, as well as provide education to the public so that the ripple effect of First Aid grows.

Through supporting the growth of community partnerships, you will bring people along to our cause, growing our membership and fundraising base and spreading the message that First Aid Saves Lives. 

Through volunteering as a Community First Aider, you’ll get a huge sense of satisfaction and pride delivering an essential service. It’s great for you, great for your community and great for our nation, and it requires only a small commitment of your time. 

We will make sure you will have access to a proper induction to volunteering with SJA and the training you need for the role you take on. We will also provide you with a supportive environment while you are volunteering with us. Information about our volunteer roles are included in the role descriptions. We are looking to run a volunteering selection session, Interviews will be in person at either Whitby or Scarborough locations.

If you are successful you will need to undertake induction & training for role at these dates:
