Job description

Do you want to be part of creating a more just and equitable society? Facing History and Ourselves uses lessons of history to challenge teachers and their students to stand up to bigotry and hate. Join our growing team to help us ensure more young people grow up to be critical and empathetic thinkers who are equipped to stand up against injustice and play their role as active responsible citizens. With a focus on individual donors and corporate giving, this role is critical to our fundraising success.

Role Overview

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Development Officer plays a critical role in our effort to meet and exceed our ambitious annual fundraising goals, set at just over £400,000 for the current financial year (commenced 1st July 2021). The post holder will have responsibility for the day-to-day management and implementation of our individual giving and corporate partnerships plans, as well as being a contributor to fundraising through other sources (for example, trusts/foundations and events). Generating income and new sources of support for our work is central to the role, as is nurturing and developing our partnerships with existing funders and supporters.

We are looking for an inspiring, passionate individual who relishes building and maintaining relationships. Your experience is likely to come from working in a fundraising role in another charity or from working in either a Corporate Social Responsibility or direct sales role in a commercial setting. You will bring a strategic approach and enjoy being part of a small, passionate team committed to growing our work.

Your Core Competencies, Skills and Experience

(E is essential, D is Desirable)

  • Minimum of 3-5 years of donor cultivation, stewardship and solicitation experience or ability to demonstrate transferable skills and experience from other roles.  Must be able to demonstrate past successes (E)

  • Engaging relationship-builder with excellent interpersonal skills and strong oral and written communication skills; experience building relationships with Board members preferred (E)

  • Creative and flexible self-starter able to work both individually and as a member of consensus-seeking teams (E)

  • Organised and effective project manager, with the ability to manage multiple needs and assignments in a fast-paced charity setting (E)

  • Genuine commitment to the mission of Facing History and Ourselves and ability to articulate the importance of the organisation’s work to a variety of audiences (E)

  • Demonstrable commitment to working in an inclusive way (E)

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Google office suite; experience with Salesforce or other fundraising databases preferred (E)

  • Maintain a high level of confidentiality due to the nature of work (E)

  • Understanding of the motivations for philanthropy (E)

  • Excellent networking skills, with the ability to make connections between our work and potential donor interests (E)

  • Experience of working with corporate social responsibility and/or diversity and inclusion teams to develop partnerships (D)

  • Knowledge and experience of fundraising from trusts and foundations, statutory sources and events (D)

  • Familiarity with educational communities (D)

There will be a requirement to work outside normal working hours due to evening events and the fact that we work closely with Facing History and Ourselves Inc. in the United States who originated the work and provide support and guidance to the team in the UK. It is expected that this is likely to average one day a week with a later start and finish than usual working hours with reasonable notice given.

Key Duties and Accountabilities

The role will involve six key areas:

  • Planning and research; including helping to shape the development plan, identifying new sources of funding and researching potential prospects. 

  • Donor solicitation and support; including developing and nurturing relationships, securing repeat funding, managing communication with donors and growing our grassroots fundraising activity year-on-year.

  • Administration and Information Management; including managing due diligence processes, ensuring reporting is accurate and compelling, overseeing fulfilment of any employee engagement/obligations to our corporate sponsors. 

  • Marketing and Communications; including supporting the strategy to ensure our communications in all forms inspire current and potential donors, create powerful collateral to promote our work to donors, and ensure our social media channels are used effectively for fundraising and generating ’brand’ awareness.

  • Broader organisational support: contribute to the wider fundraising and community engagement activities of the charity, as required.
