The Green House Bristol is looking for a new Trustee. As Trustee, you will play a crucial role in setting the strategic direction of the charity and ensuring good governance.
Overview of the role
3 in 20 girls and 1 in 20 boys will experience sexual violence before they turn 18. Yet, with access to the right help, children and their families can heal and recover. The Green House offers this lifeline, delivering the only specialist service to children, young people and families who have experienced sexual abuse living in Avon and Somerset.
We are currently recruiting for a new Trustee to join our Trustee board. As a Trustee of The Green House, you will contribute to ensuring that the charity fulfils its mission, operates effectively, and remains accountable to survivors of child sexual abuse, and their families.
Please note that you will also be appointed as a Director of The Green House, reflecting our registration as both a charity and a Private Limited Company.
Why join us?
The service The Green House provides is distinct in four ways:
-
We are evidence-based, with everything we do guided by research and best practice
-
We are led by the voices of young people and their families
-
We are centred on community and connection
-
We are focused on the transformational power of the creative arts in helping survivors to rebuild their lives
This has resulted in a distinct service that ensures children have access to timely, specialist support services that are right for them.
Although The Green House delivers a local service, the work we do is increasingly leading the way in changing the national response to child sexual abuse – from delivering national training on pre-trial therapy to our involvement in the Upfront Survivors project.
It is an exciting time to join us as we embed our new service model, deliver a new strategy, and look to increase both our local and national visibility. You will be joining an ambitious team who work tirelessly to improve the lives of children, young people and families who have experienced sexual abuse.
About you
You do not need to have previous experience of acting as a Trustee. We are looking for you to demonstrate:

We would particularly value applications from candidates with:
-
Sector-specific knowledge of sexual violence and abuse.
-
Knowledge of any of the groups currently underrepresented within The Green House’s services. This includes boys who have been sexually abused, LGBTQI+ communities and those from the global majority.

We are looking for a Chair to steer our Board of Trustees, providing strategic oversight and governance. The Chair will be actively leading on shaping the future of our Hall, developing the business and setting its strategic direction to ensure financial viability for the future.
We are looking for an enthusiastic individual with a wide variety of skills who can be an enabler to grow the business and build on the progress we have made to date. Ideally you will have experience in leadership, management and organisational development. Experience in the voluntary sector, community facilities or running community projects would be helpful.
As a ‘hands-on’ Chair, you will bring your experience and skills to the role and will be supported by the Trustee Board, plus an established staff team including the Hall Manager, plus the Treasurer and Company Secretary.
We are a village hall in heart of the Emersons Green community, offering rooms for hire to local businesses, charities, voluntary groups and individuals for recreation or business use. We also organise and run events for the local community such as seasonal fairs, family entertainment events, seniors' activities, childrens' craft and activity sessions and discos. Our village hall is at the centre of the Emersons Green community. As a large village hall, we are looking to the future to ensure that we can be financially viable in these challenging times.
The Board of Trustees is the governing body of our charity. It is where final decisions are made. The Board’s key role is to make sure that the charity is successful in working towards its aims and objectives. The Board oversees the management of the hall and its staff and is responsible for the larger decisions, keeping an eye on the budgets and generally helping to ensure the halls continued success. This may include approving improvements to the hall, enacting policies, supporting the Hall Manager and the staff in dealing with hirers and staging community events and activities, and planning and monitoring progress.
The day to day running of the hall is dealt with by the Hall Manager, with the support of staff, the Treasurer and Company Secretary.
We have 6 scheduled meetings a year and then usually a few ad hoc ones to look at budgets and staff meetings. These are usually in the evenings. The regular meetings tend to last about 2.5 hours.

Active Gloucestershire seeks two Trustees
5 x Board Meetings per year – 3 hours
4 to 6 Sub-Committee Meetings per year – 2 hours
They’re seeking two Trustees to help mould the organisation’s future and enable everyone in Gloucestershire to live healthy, happy lives.
Active Gloucestershire inspires and enables people to improve their lives through physical activity. Physical activity is a key factor to improving wellbeing, and social inequalities can create barriers to physical activity. Active Gloucestershire is committed to ensuring everyone can enjoy the transformative benefits of physical activity - regardless of their background.
The organisational vision is for everyone in Gloucestershire to live healthy and happy lives. This is delivered though we can move - a social movement committed to getting Gloucestershire physically active. As the coordinating body for we can move, Active Gloucestershire work with many partners to promote an active, healthy lifestyle; from community and voluntary groups to schools, local authorities and national organisations such as Sport England.
For this position, Active Gloucestershire hope to hear from strategic thinkers, who are able to remain objective and focus on the bigger picture during decision-making. They will be committed to personal development, and strongly advocate for equality, diversity and inclusion.
In addition to these characteristics, the successful candidates will have experience in one or more of the following areas:
The voluntary and community sector - including Charity leadership.
Health, wellbeing or physical activity in Gloucestershire
People who have been impacted by inequalities in sport and physical activity
They welcome applications from any and all backgrounds. Experience as a Trustee is not necessary - alignment with the organisational values is far more important. New Trustees will receive an induction and will be paired with a ‘Board Buddy’ to gain the knowledge, confidence and skill to hit the ground running.
