About the role
As Head of External Affairs, you will lead a team of seven and set the strategic direction for our external affairs function. Your leadership will be instrumental in ensuring our media relations, public affairs, and stakeholder engagement activities enhance the Health Foundation’s reputation, support our strategic objectives, and position us as a leading voice in health and care policy.
As a senior member of the Communications team, you will be responsible for contributing to the leadership and smooth running of the Communications team, as well as providing advice to senior staff and colleagues across the Foundation. In this role, you will:
- Lead the external affairs team, providing direction, motivation, performance management and development for team members and working with them to develop a vision for first class external affairs at the Foundation.
- Lead our public affairs work, ensuring that our work is seen, our voice is heard, and we are influential at the highest levels in Westminster and Whitehall.
- Oversee the effective management of the Foundation’s media relations by overseeing proactive and reactive media work, building relationships with journalists and providing robust media relations advice to senior staff and other colleagues
- Provide expert advice to the Chief Executive, other senior leaders and colleagues across the Foundation.
We are looking for a confident and strategic leader with a strong track record in media and public affairs, ideally within the health, public policy, or not-for-profit sectors. You will bring:
- Proven experience in leading high-performing communications or external affairs teams.
- Excellent public affairs and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to influence at senior levels.
- A strong understanding of the UK media, with experience of leading proactive and reactive media work
- Strong strategic thinking and the ability to translate complex issues into compelling narrative
- Ability to write high quality briefings and other written materials for external and internal audiences.

Home Based (within the North and East region)
Communications at the RNLI is key to helping prevent drowning, manage the RNLI’s reputation and build support for our charity’s cause. We’re looking for an experienced PR or media professional in the North and East region who understands how to reach the right people with the right messages on the most effective channels.
Working alongside the RNLI’s Lifesaving and Engagement teams in the North and East, you’ll identify the risks and opportunities in the region and provide expert communications advice to support activity – whether it’s opening a new lifeboat station, mitigating risk to reputation or reaching key audiences with water safety and fundraising messages. You’ll produce and deliver a plan of activity that allows you to provide thoughtful, wide-ranging communications advice and support across media relations, internal and external stakeholder management and public affairs.
The RNLI is a 24/7 search and rescue organisation and you should be ready to work outside normal office hours. You will also be part of an out-of-hours duty press officer rota, which will require scheduled weekend and evening work.
You will be home-based with the ability to cover the region, which stretches from Berwick-upon-Tweed to Burnham-on-Crouch, including related inland areas, or work from the RNLI’s regional office in Thornaby-on-Tees. The ability to work independently and prioritise your work is essential. You will be expected to travel throughout the region.

Media relations
- Work with the Head of Communications and Campaigns to develop and deliver a proactive PR strategy to increase the reach of the charity.
- Develop PR materials including press releases, pitch angles, interview briefs, and media lists.
- Coordinate accurate and timely responses to inbound media enquiries, liaising with journalists and spokespeople.
- Work on media opportunities for our high-profile ambassadors.
- Support media planning and execution for fundraising partnerships and key organisational milestones.
- Monitor the media, including newspapers, magazines, journals, broadcasts, and newswires, for opportunities and coverage relevant to women’s health.
- Analyse and share media coverage internally and externally.

The Head of Communications at CBM UK is a crucial role, with responsibility for increasing the profile of CBM UK to enable the organisation to deliver its strategic objectives. This role has tactical and long-term strategic decision-making responsibility.
The post-holder is responsible for the development and implementation of the requisite communications plans, policies and procedures that are required to deliver CBM UK’s 2026-2030 strategy. Key areas of responsibility include developing brand definition, messaging and presentation; delivering increased media coverage; acting as a spokesperson; and strengthening organisation-wide communications by producing high quality content and through demonstrating evidence of our impact.
Key responsibilities
Strategic (20%)
a. To develop CBM UK’s strategic communications objectives and annual plans to enable CBM UK teams to deliver the 2026-2030 strategy.
b. Improve brand definition, messaging and presentation to ensure CBM UK’s work and positioning is communicated effectively to target audiences.
c. Develop and implement clear communications policies and procedures for CBM staff to follow in order to successfully and cohesively represent the CBM brand.
d. Ensure that the voices of people with disabilities are at the heart of CBM UK communications.
Communications and networking (60%)
External
a. Oversee and deliver media relations activity to meet CBM UK’s objectives. Develop effective working relationships with target media, respond promptly to queries (sometimes out-of-hours). Prepare, issue and ‘sell in’ press releases, ensuring key messages are prominent and act as an organisational media spokesperson. Monitor relevant media coverage to increase effectiveness of activity.
b. Lead and manage the Communications team to deliver communications activity to increase fundraising and advocacy potential from public and sector audiences. This includes responsibility for delivering campaigns, publications, social media posts, blogs and website pages as needed, and acting as an event spokesperson. Content sign-off authority within agreed parameters.
c. Collaborating with the Advocacy and Programmes teams to ensure outputs, evidence and messages are widely disseminated and communicated.
d. Oversee the management and development of the CBM UK website(s) to ensure that it reflects the work, values and mission of CBM UK and that it inspires a range of audiences to take action.
e. Be an outstanding advocate for CBM, delivering communications in line with the vision and values of the charity.
f. Awareness and anticipation of trends and legislation in charity communications, enabling CBM UK to respond and adapt as appropriate.
g. In the event of a humanitarian crisis, contribute to developing an emergency appeal.
Internal
a. Work with CBM UK and global colleagues and partners to ensure appropriate resources are available. This includes oversight of the collection of human-interest stories, images and film that portray people with dignity and respect, while challenging the stigma and misunderstanding around disability and global poverty.
b. Oversee the implementation of the CBM UK Sector Communications Strategy through attending regular meetings and collaboration with Programme and Advocacy teams. To manage the Communications Team to deliver the communications-led activities outlined in the strategy and ensure advocacy and evidence messaging and outputs are effectively communicated.
c. Build excellent working relationships with the CEO and Board.
d. Regularly review, update and provide training to CBM UK staff on the Crisis Communications Media Plan and be a member of the Crisis Communications Management Team.
e. Help increase CBM UK’s network of high-profile supporters to support fundraising and advocacy: maintain prospects spreadsheet, research contact details and background details, prepare briefs.
f. Support fundraising and advocacy teams to increase CBM UK’s network of high-profile supporters.
Leadership and people management (10%)
a. Support and inspire direct report in line with CBM UK’s staff management policies and procedures. Ensure team members are appropriately trained, briefed and motivated to achieve their objectives and meet targets and recruit to posts where relevant. Regular 121s and appraisal reviews.
b. Serve as a member of the Senior Management Team
Planning, reporting, budgets (10%)
a. Develop and report on key performance indicators, milestones and targets to facilitate informed decisions and improved working practice.
b. Plan and manage budgets to ensure funds are used to maximum effect.
c. Work with the Data and Insights Team to ensure appropriate recording of communications activity through the database (Salesforce) or through integration with other databases and platforms.
Other
a. Work with other teams, including the CBM Global Federation, to maximise collaboration opportunities and integrated working.
b. Help develop a culture of enthusiasm, continual improvement and success which reflects the ambitions of CBM UK.
c. Occasional out of normal office working hours. Occasional travel in the UK and internationally.
d. Other duties as required by the Director of Fundraising, Impact & Communications.

Overview:
Spires supports homeless and vulnerably housed people in South London. Spires has undergone a period of rapid transformation, moving to a model of multi-site working across three London Boroughs. Our core services include, day centre style drop ins for homeless people, a Women’s drop in, a Refugee drop in and outreach targeted at supporting Women who are sex working.
The Head of Fundraising and Communications will be joining the organisation at an exciting time. Recent successful funding outcomes provide a short period of relative funding stability and an opportunity for the post holder to develop our communications and community fundraising strategies.
Part 1: Job profile
1.1 Purpose of job
To generate income from a diverse funding pool that includes trusts and foundations, legacy and individual giving, community giving, government contracts and corporate support. Trusts and foundations remain the primary funding source for Spires so maintaining consistent application output is a core element of the role.
Oversee Spires’ external relations and public profile. The post holder will be responsible for all communications and will look for areas to increase the organisations profile.
Work with Spires CEO and the Head of Client Services to ensure that data and outcomes are being effectively captured in a way that is helpful for evidencing impact.
1.2 Position in organisation
The post holder joins Spires’ Senior Leadership Team and will report directly to the Chief Executive Officer. The post holder will join the finance, fundraising and risk subcommittee which includes members of the board of trustees.
The post holder will manage the Communications and Community Engagement Lead who currently leads on community fundraising, social media and volunteer recruitment.
Part 2: Key duties and responsibilities
2.1 Management Responsibilities

2.2 Income generation

Maximise existing and find new income to meet agreed income targets.

Part 4: Summary of terms and conditions of service
Location: The postholder will be an employee of The Spires Centre. This post is based at 2nd Floor, Elmfield House, 5 Stockwell Mews, SW9 9GX This role will by hybrid with three days in the office and two days from home.
Probation: This post is subject to a 6 month probationary period.
Notice: This post is subject to an 12 weeks’ notice period once confirmed in post.
Annual leave: The annual leave entitlement is 35 days per year including 8 bank holidays.
Pension: The Spires Centre will contribute 5% of annual salary for those who qualify for our group pension plan.
Other benefits: The Spires Centre will provide life and income protection insurance for those who qualify for our group plans.
Expenses: This role will require travel within the UK/London. Out-of-pocket expenses will be paid when incurred in accordance with our expenses policy.
