Job description

EAST LONDON CARES: HEAD OF PROGRAMMES

  • Salary: £33,000 (plus travel)
  • Full time, permanent position (37.5 hours per week)
  • 26 days’ annual leave plus bank holidays
  • Flexible working hours

East London Cares is a new charity reducing loneliness and isolation amongst older and younger people alike, improving the confidence, belonging, purpose and power of all participants, and bringing people together to bridge the gaps across social, generational, digital, cultural and attitudinal divides.

This is a leadership role in that small and growing charity. East London Cares has been operational for just ten months, and in that time has built a strong local track record. As our current Head of Programmes moves into a new post in The Cares Family, this is an opportunity for new leadership – to progress our first year of work, to deepen relationships and to continue to develop East London Cares’ team.

You will need to be a powerful communicator, in writing and in person, and someone who can talk to and relate to people from all backgrounds, no matter their circumstances – someone equally comfortable discussing illness and isolation with a housebound 95-year-old in Shadwell as you are talking about work and weddings with a 25-year-old volunteer in Canary Wharf.

You will be outgoing and tenacious; with an organised, collaborative approach, a clear, authentic communication style and an intrinsic understanding of the power of networks and digital media.

Crucially, we need a people-person: someone who can guide vital partnerships including with corporations, Councils and long-established community groups. We also need a numbers person, someone methodical, target focused and strategic, who can work with our national Director of Programmes to drive a shared vision. And we need a self-starter: someone committed, tough, and focused working alone as well as collaboratively, who is passionate about developing East London Cares over the coming years.

Finally, we need someone who understands and is motivated by the demographics and social challenges of our communities and the issues we work on – and in particular who is passionate about and can clearly promote our vision for building close community networks in order to tackle isolation and loneliness in east London as the city continues to change at pace.

In achieving this vision you will be trusted to work dynamically and independently at this exciting young organisation, with a growing profile and backing from major local and national supporters, and a real opportunity to build lasting success.

And you will be provided with development challenges and opportunities, including support from our national Director of Programmes and ever-growing local and national networks to play a vital role in the development of East London Cares and the wider Cares Family. If that sounds like you, we'd love to hear from you.

Please read the full job description and details on how to apply via the East London Cares website.

East London Cares is an anti-racist organisation committed to advancing anti-racism in our work and in our communities. We particularly welcome applications from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic people, who are currently underrepresented in our organisation. We are an equal opportunities employer.
