Community Volunteer - Sheffield
Do you want to raise some money for Shelter, while having fun along the way?
Information about the role
This role involves supporting at a range of events to help raise money and awareness to tackle the housing emergency. It’s a really flexible opportunity. Once you’re signed up, we’ll let you know about upcoming events and tasks, and you can decide which you’d like to do.
Location: Sheffield
Suggested contribution: It’s up to you! Ideally, you’d help out at least 4-5 times per year, but this is flexible.
Availability: This is a varied opportunity with events taking place at different times and on different days throughout the year, including evenings and weekends. You can choose the events that best suit your availability.

Main activities may include:
This is a flexible and diverse role. Here are some of the activities you might get involved in:
· Represent us at a range of events including, community fairs, gigs, Pride marches, sporting events and street stalls.
· Support some of our fundraising activity such as holding collection cans in public spaces or bag packing in supermarkets.
· Help us grow our movement for change by supporting petitions and raising awareness of our calls to action through social media.
· Other one-off tasks such as web-based research.
This role fights the housing emergency by raising funds that enable Shelter to provide advice and support and campaigning for change. The events you’ll be attending are also great for raising awareness of the housing emergency and how people can get involved to help tackle it.

Supporting you

· You will be able to claim reasonable volunteering expenses in line with Shelter’s volunteer policy. Where financial circumstances would be a barrier to volunteering, we may be able to offer these funds in advance.
· You will be able to access our volunteer support package, including our colleague assistance programme and Shelter’s network of mental health first aiders.

What will you be doing?
Depending on your skills and availability, you may support with:
- Welcoming and engaging women participants into the session
- Helping to set up and pack down the space (chairs, refreshments, sign-in sheets)
- Supporting the delivery of group activities (e.g. creative arts, health talks, mindfulness)
- Listening and signposting women to staff or support services
- Supporting guests with form-filling, where relevant
- Encouraging peer connection and reducing isolation

You will be supported to work within WSUP’s trauma-informed and psychologically informed (TIC/PIE) approach. Lived experience is welcome but not essential.

WSUP is a grassroots charity supporting people experiencing hardship and/or housing instability across Royal Borough of Greenwich. We work with people facing poverty, homelessness, substance misuse, trauma, and health inequalities. Our support is holistic, inclusive, and rooted in lived experience.
WSUP is committed to creating safe, inclusive, and empowering spaces, particularly for women who may have experienced trauma, discrimination or marginalisation. This includes our Women Wednesday programme – a women-only community session offering practical support, creative wellbeing activities, peer connection, and access to health and housing services.

Emmaus UK is currently undertaking feasibility work to consider the incorporation of an SPV which can become a Registered Provider of Social Housing on behalf of the Emmaus federation in the UK. This is an exciting prospect and would unlock significant potential to achieve our strategic objective to help more people.

Trustee Role Description
Location: Home based online meetings. Two annual face-to-face meetings
Reporting to: EUK Chair and board of trustees
Remuneration:This role is voluntary. Any travel expenses will be reimbursed.
To ensure EUK pursues its charitable purposes, adheres to its principles & values and works strategically towards the benefit of companions, federation members and the public.
To ensure EUK complies with its governing documents, Charity and Company Law, financial responsibilities and other statutory and relevant legislations and regulations.
Principle responsibility and duties
- To develop, define and agree the strategic vision, mission and priorities of EUK and monitor and evaluate its performance against these targets.
- To ensure EUK uses its resources exclusively for the advancement of its charitable purposes and solely in line with its values and principles
- To ensure legal, regulatory and internal compliance to key governing documents and always act in the best interests of EUK and its beneficiaries
- To ensure the financial sustainability and stability of EUK and its assets by overseeing and reviewing EUK budgets, accounts and financial reports
- To ensure the proper investment of EUK funds and protection of EUK reserves
- To ensure clear, effective and efficient administration of EUK activities, including good governance, risk management, policies, procedures and oversight
- To support the Chair and Chief Executive in their leadership of EUK and ensure proper and formal arrangements for recruitment, appointment, supervision, support, appraisal and remuneration of EUK’s Chief Executive

Specialist Duties
In addition to the above general duties, trustees are expected to bring specialist skills, experience, knowledge or expertise in specific areas. This may involve leading discussion on issues where they have specific expertise, highlighting key issues and providing insight, advice and guidance on new initiatives.
We are currently looking for trustees, with knowledge of housing regulation and related expertise, or with legal knowledge and expertise or with expertise in property acquisition and development

Time Commitment
EUK trustees currently serve for up to three, three-year terms
The EUK Board meets online, quarterly as well as at an annual face to face two-day overnight strategy session usually in Autumn and an annual face to face meeting in Spring. The EUK Board currently has four internal sub-committees that manage specific areas of work and also meet online, quarterly. Each trustee is also required to become a member of one of these committees.

As a Homeless Health Peer Advocate, you will form part of our team helping those experiencing homelessness to achieve better health outcomes.
Homeless Health Peer Advocacy is a pioneering model of advocacy style support. Asylum Aid runs a drop-in information hub every Monday, as well as an advice phoneline on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, where Westminster residents can get support and advice in a range of areas, such as employment, housing and immigration. We are looking for volunteers who speak one of our community languages (Arabic, Kurdish, Bengali, Tigrinya, Farsi) to support us at this information hub, as interpreters and/or administrative volunteers. There we will also be the opportunity to receive training to become an Adviser or Assessor (this requires longer than the usual 6-month minimum commitment). We particularly encourage Westminster residents to apply.
Volunteers will be trained on the job and will have to opportunity to attend thematic training, as well as receiving on-going support and supervision.
Main tasks and activities:
- Interpreting:
- Interpreting for advisers and clients as required, depending on language skills
- Administration:
- Responding to client queries
- Answering the telephone
- Assisting and registering clients who come into reception.
- Taking messages for advisers.
- Printing outlook timetable and Advice pro appointments for the day.
- Inputting data in excel and Advice pro.
- Helping advisers with general administrative tasks such as typing letters, photocopying bundles, and telephoning clients, keeping client files or local information up to date, amending stocks of leaflets, etc.
- Gateway Assessor Role/General Advice Role
- Conducting initial client assessments.
- Conducting client interviews (by telephone and in person) to understand client problems and identify key information such as time limits.
- Signposting/Referral; Referring and signposting clients appropriately (both internally and externally) following agreed protocols, including making appointments and informing clients of what they can expect.
- Input data in excel and Advice pro.
- Assisting clients with general form filling, making phone call to agencies to resolve simple problems with benefit, housing, employers, council, etc.
- Case Recording:
- All clients’ cases are recorded for quality assurance purposes, and to ensure that the client can be offered an efficient service if the client requires further advice or the case becomes more complex. Your supervisor will discuss case recording with you.

Our Van Driver’s mates are out and about supporting drivers with delivering and collecting stock throughout the local area. They play a key part in getting donations to and from shops. This role does require the ability to lift heavy items.
- Volunteering in a leadership role
Our volunteer supervisors help with overseeing the running of our shop and creating a fantastic environment for our customers. You may be involved with coordinating and supporting other volunteers, operating computer systems, and being a key point of contact for the shop.
Skills and Experiences Required:
We welcome applications from people with a wide range of skills and experiences. You don’t need to have volunteered or worked in a shop before as full training will be provided. What’s important to us is that you are a team player, open to learning and willing to follow Shelter’s policies and can be an excellent ambassador for Shelter. The Role
We are seeking a Volunteer Fundraising Manager to help us grow our income, organise events, strengthen donor relationships, and ensure our services can reach more people in need.
You will play a key role in shaping and delivering our fundraising strategy, working closely with trustees and volunteers to build sustainable income streams.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and implement a fundraising plan aligned with our mission.

Amy’s Place is a partnership between the Amy Winehouse Foundation and Clarion Housing, providing supported living accommodation for young women aged 18-30 in recovery from drugs, alcohol and other addictive behaviors.
As a great communicator with ‘green fingers’ you will create a calm, nurturing environment in which to support the residents to gain gardening skills and to explore the possibility of growing their own food.
Activities
Inspire the residents to take an interest in the outdoor space at Amy’s Place and involve them in the development of a regular gardening and/or food growing club.
Help residents to develop their gardening skills and knowledge specific to growing food, through group workshops and individually tailored support, guidance and encouragement.
Commitment
This is a flexible opportunity and volunteering times and frequency will vary depending on the volunteer’s availability and the needs of the residents. It might be every week or fortnight ideally for a minimum of 3 months.

This role will require us to carry out an enhanced check through the disclosure and barring service.
