Spark Inside runs coaching programmes in prisons across London and the South East, to encourage rehabilitation and reduce reoffending. 

We are one of the first organisations to take life coaching to people living and working in prison and to use systems coaching to bring together staff and prisoners in UK prisons. Our expert coaches are qualified and trained professionals. In addition to developing and delivering innovative coaching programmes, we are also committed to working with parliamentarians and government officials to influence criminal justice policy, and shift the perception of people in prison, platforming their voices and highlighting their unlocked potential.

To achieve our ambitious strategy, Spark Inside is seeking a Communications Manager to help raise the charity’s public profile, build influence with policymakers, attract funders and commissioners, and ensure the lived experience of young people in the justice system shapes our messaging, campaigns and strategy.

You will work with the Head of Communications and Advocacy to deliver a programme of compelling external communications activities through digital, print, press and events in order to increase Spark Inside’s visibility and ensure our key messages are wide-reaching and impactful.

You will report to the Head of Communications & Advocacy and work closely alongside our Participation and Engagement Manager and Policy Lead, with line management responsibility for a part-time Communications Officer. You will also work with a range of external freelancers on design, film and print. You will build and maintain good relationships with colleagues across the whole Spark Inside team, offering support and advice as well as drawing on their expertise and insights to make our communications impactful and engaging.

• Type of contract: Permanent contract

Purpose of the Role 

The HR Manager plays a key leadership role, working on, and closely with, the management team to ensure effective HR support across the organisation. The Role

Active Together is a multimodal prehabilitation and rehabilitation service that has been developed by world leading academics and practitioners at the Advanced Wellbeing Research Centre (AWRC) at Sheffield Hallam University and funded by Yorkshire Cancer Research.

Supporting the Head of Active Together, as our Services Manager – Active Together Hull your role will be to establish, implement, manage, and support the continuing improvement of the prehabilitation and rehabilitation service for cancer patients at the newly developed Active Together centre in Hull. Acting as the non-clinical lead, the role ensures the service is safe, effective, and aligned with the Active Together service design while delivering value for money for the charity.

In addition to overseeing service delivery, the post holder will be responsible for managing the facility itself, including offices, consultation rooms, and three gym studio spaces. The role provides line management of the Service Administrator and supporting the Lead Fitness Instructor, ensuring efficient operational support for the service. Additionally, the post holder will organise and manage the onboarding process for new Yorkshire Cancer Research colleagues, ensuring a smooth transition into the service.

The role involves close collaboration with Hull University Teaching Hospitals (HUTH) clinical staff, working alongside the Service Clinical Lead to ensure an integrated approach to prehabilitation and rehabilitation for cancer patients.

Specifically, you will:

Leadership & Service Management

· Oversee the launch and ongoing management of the Active Together prehabilitation and rehabilitation service in Hull, ensuring smooth implementation and continuous improvement.

· Work closely with HUTH clinical staff, fostering strong collaborative relationships to ensure effective patient pathways.

· Partner with the Service Clinical Lead to maintain alignment between clinical and non-clinical aspects of the service.

· Lead collaborative working across the service delivery team, maximising colleagues' skills, ensuring clear direction, and maintaining high-quality processes.

· Collaborate with the Digital Teams at Yorkshire Cancer Research and at HUTH to manage and develop IT systems that support the safe and effective delivery, monitoring and evaluation of the service, including telephony, hardware, and software.

Line Management & Administrative Leadership

· Provide line management of the Service Administrator and any other administrative support colleagues, ensuring clarity in responsibilities and professional growth.

· Conduct regular one-to-one meetings, set clear objectives, and support colleagues in achieving their goals.

· Ensure efficient administrative support, covering scheduling, patient coordination, and facility management.

Onboarding & colleagues Integration

· Ensure that all equipment is available to be able to operate the Active Together Hull Service environment

· Working closely with HR to organise and manage the onboarding process for new Yorkshire Cancer Research colleagues, ensuring a seamless transition into the service.

· Provide structured induction, ensuring new colleagues understand the service model, policies, and operational procedures.

Evidence, Research, and Development

· Oversee data generation to support service evaluation and research.

· Ensure all service-related data is accurate and submitted in a timely manner.

· Gather patient experience insights in Hull through PPI work, patient satisfaction questionnaires, and qualitative evaluations, feeding into service improvement initiatives.

Facility Management

· Oversee day-to-day operations of the Active Together Centre, ensuring optimal use of offices, consultation rooms, and gym spaces.

· Ensure facility safety, compliance, and upkeep, liaising with building management as needed.

· Manage procurement and maintenance of essential equipment and resources to support service delivery.

· Lead on the management of contractors and service providers (including but not limited to, shredding, printing, office greenery).

Other duties

· Provide cover as required across the team to cover annual leave, sickness absence and training

· Be trained as a First Aider and Fire Marshal and manage the rota for First Aid and Fire Marshal cover

Main Responsibilities:

Leadership

1. As a member of the Operational Leadership Team and wider Senior Leadership Team, work collaboratively and take collective responsibility for the strategic management and leadership of the organisation.

2. Work closely with the CEO, Treasurer and Board of Trustees to facilitate good governance and risk management.

3. Manage, maintain and develop all financial systems and control; increasing their impact and quality, and implementing best practices in financial management.

4. To supervise finance assistants and ensure that they are adhering to financial code of practices.

Financial Management

1. Lead and manage all aspects of the financial cycle, including budgeting, forecasting, fixed asset management, reserves & designated fund management and financial reporting.

2. Work with HR & Payroll Officer to manage and retain oversight of the day to day financial operations, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, banking and general ledger maintenance, including the reconciliation of petty cash, credit cards and all bank accounts on a monthly basis reviewing and approving payment runs and payroll.

3. Work with the CEO and Senior Leadership Team to prepare the annual budgets and forecasts.

4. Lead and manage the provision of regular budget monitoring and reports to budget holders.

5. Assist with the budget preparation for funding bids. Manage, monitor and keep track of any grants, funding or commissioned income, working with relevant managers to provide relevant financial information for inclusion in monitoring reports.

About the Role

Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer the Interim Head of Finance & Operations leads on and assumes day to day responsibility for providing high quality, strategic financial management for Career Ready.

You will lead on business operations to ensure the ongoing effective functioning of the charity and drive sustainable growth.

The Interim Head of Finance and Operations plays a key role in leading greater organisational efficiency and simplifying processes and will continue the delivery of a project plan reflecting the 2025-30 strategy.

You will play a critical role in driving the increased quality of Career Ready’s offer to our stakeholders in line with our strategy, vision and values.

Member of our SMT, comprising of the CEO, Director for Scotland, Director of Programme and Partnerships and Heads of functions.

This is an interim role to cover a period of maternity leave.

Main responsibilities and accountabilities

· Lead, direct and manage the finance and operations functions, overseeing two direct reports, ensuring they deliver a high-quality service to all internal and external stakeholders and are seen as adding value, in enabling Career Ready to achieve its vision and strategic objectives through its people. 

· Continue the delivery of a project plan reflecting the 2025-30 strategy, ensuring that activities happen at pace, are deadline-driven and achieve a high level of impact.

· Assume overall responsibility for the financial management of Career Ready, working with the SMT to ensure high quality and effective use of charitable funds.

· Input into and review the financial elements of funding applications and ensure that fund accounting processes align with funders’ requirements for project reporting.

· Produce financial reports for various stakeholders, as well as leading on financial modelling.

· Have oversight of all financial and accountancy matters including month end reports, management accounts, cash flow management, compliance, tax liability, presentation of management information and KPIs. · Oversee and coordinate the fully managed payroll services with the external bureau for all Career Ready employees and for some internship students (Jun to Aug during the Summer)
