Who they’re looking for
Our client is seeking a new Trustee with a public affairs background who is passionate about their vision, mission and values, to support the board and team in achieving their charitable aims.
They are looking for an individual with a strong background in the field of public affairs. This could have been gained through a position as an MP, through another role in Parliament or engaging with policymakers on behalf of the public, private or charity sector. Applicants should also have a strong interest in animal welfare and science, and be willing to advocate on the charity’s behalf.
Previous experience of being a Trustee is not necessary as a full induction and ongoing support will be provided.
Equality, diversity and inclusion
They want everyone they work with, as a colleague, volunteer, supporter, or someone they support, to feel included and that they belong at the organisation. They are committed to building a diverse organisation that represents the communities they serve and ensuring inclusion in everything they do. They will support you to make sure that you bring your whole self and can be at your best.
Board meetings and time commitment
The Board ordinarily meets four times per year in March, May, August and November. Two of these meetings are held remotely via video call on a Saturday, and two are held in person in London across weekends. In addition, Trustees are encouraged to join a Committee relevant to their area of expertise which meets at least once per quarter via video call. An appropriate time commitment will be required over the course of the year for preparative work between meetings. Trustees are also invited to attend occasional charity events and join recruitment panels on an ad hoc basis.
Following a probationary period where Trustee-elects attend at least 3 board meetings, appointed Trustees serve a three-year term, with the option to renew for a further three years.
This is a relatively new Trustee role for the charity, therefore you will be expected to play a key role in shaping strategy and sharing knowledge and expertise with other Trustees. Trusteeship is an unremunerated position, though reasonable out-of-pocket expenses will be paid.
If this opportunity to join a small but ambitious charity appeals to you, and you have public affairs expertise, enthusiasm and a commitment to their vision of a world where animal-free, human-specific technologies secure breakthroughs for patients then they’d like to hear from you.
We reserve the right to close this vacancy early if we receive sufficient applications for the role. Therefore, if you are interested, please submit your application as early as possible.

About We Are In Beta.
We Are In Beta is an online community of 18,800+ school leaders and teachers which helps them share and learn how they get the best outcomes for their students.
We believe most of the solutions to schools’ problems are in schools already. Or at least, in the minds of the brilliant people who work in them.
Our job is to find them and share them widely, so nobody has to figure it out on their own.
Imagine a day when you can find someone - or something - that can help solve any problem you’re facing, whenever you need it.
A day when every student has leaders and teachers who are equipped with the most successful strategies and networks to improve their education.
Join us to help us build that future for our schools.
We - schools - Are In Beta - always learning.
What do we do?
To work towards that future:
-
We research great practice so our members can discover it and be inspired by it.
-
We produce and share practical content with great schools through events, webinars, podcasts and resources - so they can learn from others’ successes (and the failures too).
-
We build communities of practice so colleagues can meet and grow together
Some stats we’re really proud of:
In just 4 years we’ve grown the online community to over 18,800 school leaders and teachers.
-
3,400 - MATs and schools we are connected to
-
2500+ resources have been shared by our members - if each one on average takes two hours produce - in reality it's probably more - that’s more than…
-
3.1 years' worth of others’ work each and every one of our members can access just by being a part of the community
-
3,710 policies and resources from successful schools and MATs we have curated, analysed and shared.
-
£1,500 - the amount we save a school each time they access the research they ask us to do for them.
-
870,000 hours - the number of hours it would have taken members to discover the insights we've shared with them had they done the research on their own in silos.
-
£25 million - the amount it would have cost schools had they funded those research hours themselves
-
1.5 million - the number of miles our members would have had to have travelled to meet our expert presenters in case study schools had our community not existed online.
-
8,500 people came to the National INSET Day in Dec 2020 when the government left schools with almost no time at all to plan an end of term INSET.
We are just getting started. Join us to write the next chapter

In 2022, we launched the #OverExposed campaign to advocate for ethical imagery and storytelling in the fundraising and marketing materials of international development charities.
Duties
The role will involve a combination of stewardship and new business, helping us to secure support from more trusts, foundations and businesses who share our passion for transforming the lives of children in the communities with whom we work.
Key duties will be to:
- Prospect and research potential grantmakers and businesses who share our strategic objectives
- Take a relationships-based approach wherever possible, establishing warm relationships between partners and Chance for Childhood
- Provide input to the 2025-2030 fundraising strategy, using your experience and knowledge of the fundraising landscape to help us devise an ambitious but sustainable plan to safeguard our work for the next five years
- Maintain a strong pipeline of funding opportunities
- Draft compelling, creative and persuasive funding proposals
- Secure four, five and six figure grants from trusts and foundations
- Manage a small portfolio of trusts and corporate partners, maintaining an accurate calendar of reporting and stewardship expectations
- Write and submit accurate reports to funders’ deadlines
- Beyond meeting formal reporting requirements, provide outstanding informal stewardship to funders, developing strong relationships and increasing the chances of repeat funding
- Communicate skilfully across borders with our brilliant in-country programmes team to maintain a flow of information, stories and data for fundraising and reporting
- Accurately record communications using our fundraising CRM (Beacon) and enable reporting on expected income
- Work effectively within our small, supportive and mighty fundraising and marketing team to ensure strong dissemination of ideas, and fidelity to our organisational brand in communications
- Stay well informed of existing and new fundraising legislation and adhere to the Fundraising Regulator’s Code of Practice, the Chartered Institute of Fundraising best practice as well as relevant fundraising and UK GDPR requirements

Who we are
We are Brake, the national, acclaimed road safety charity which provides the National Road Victim Service (NRVS). We have been supporting victims of the carnage on our roads since 1995. We also campaign for positive change to prevent future collisions and save lives.
A rare and exciting opportunity to help us to help others
Did you know that every 20 minutes, someone is killed or seriously injured on our roads? The impact of that on individuals and their wider families is profound and far reaching and it can happen to any of us, at any time.
The National Road Victim Service is growing, allowing us to reach greater numbers of people in need and building upon our well-established foundation to create an enduring legacy. To support this growth we’re looking for a dedicated caseworker to become part of our enthusiastic, energised and dynamic team, delivering world-class support services to people at a time when they are most vulnerable.
This is definitely not the average 9 to 5 job, and it is not every day that opportunities like this come along. You could be playing a significant part in our commitment to roll out our clinically developed, trauma informed support services across the country, making a positive contribution to the lives of those traumatically bereaved or seriously injured as a result of road traffic collisions.
What we offer
-
36 days holiday (including bank holidays, pro rata for part-time working patterns)
-
Employee Assistance Programme
-
Flexible working
-
Ongoing support including regular independent clinical supervision sessions
-
Be an essential part of a skilled, dedicated and friendly team with a knowledgeable and engaged Board of Trustees
Who you are
We need energised, self-starters who are passionate about helping others, to join our fantastic team.
We are looking for people who have a background in providing emotional support and practical research and advocacy for vulnerable people after a serious psychological trauma such as the death of a loved one in violent circumstances.
Specifically we are seeking candidates with:
-
experience of frontline care for people in crisis with acute vulnerabilities and risks (desirable but not essential)
-
comprehensive understanding of the processes involved in the criminal justice system (desirable but not essential)
-
research and advocacy skills – you get crucial things done through liaison with external agencies
-
significant resilience, and willingness to be professionally developed and clinically supervised
-
a full UK driving licence, with access to your own transport and are willing to use it for work purposes (we reimburse travelling expenses).
Candidates must be able to speak Welsh. You will be expected to support families who are first language Welsh.
We are interested in receiving applications, not to the exclusion of others, from candidates with experience supporting people who have suffered sudden bereavement or working with those with heightened vulnerabilities.
Experience gained in the following kinds of roles tends to transfer well to the role of caseworker at Brake: police force, roles within the criminal justice system, family liaison officer, counsellor, experience in health and social care or previous caseworker experience in any area.
The greatest reward comes from knowing you have made a real positive difference to someone’s recovery from psychological trauma, and the emotional or practical challenges presented by their sudden bereavement or serious injury.
If you are seeking out a new challenge and think you have the skills, passion, and commitment that we are looking for, we would be interested in hearing from you.
About the team and how we work
-
Brake actively promotes equality, diversity, and inclusion. We employ based on skills and experience of candidates, irrespective of age, disability (including hidden disabilities), gender, gender identity or gender reassignment, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, race, religion or belief, or sexual orientation
-
The successful candidate will be required to go through an enhanced DBS vetting process due to the sensitive nature of the service delivered. Additional police vetting may also be required (TBC)
-
Please note we do not accept applications from serious traffic offenders due to the nature of our work. Employees are subject to driver licence checks.
To apply
Submit your CV and a covering letter which clearly demonstrate you have what it takes to perform this challenging and rewarding role.
