DFN Project SEARCH is looking for an experienced charity finance professional to take on the newly-created Head of Finance role. As a well-established and successful UK charity, we are operating in a period of continued growth and require a Head of Finance who combines reliable financial insight, robust control and strong governance with hands-on delivery. This role will work closely with the Finance Director and wider executive team while remaining directly involved in month-end, reporting, controls, cash flow and systems improvement. This role has a requirement to travel to London an average of twice monthly as well as other UK travel to support away days and programme visits.

Key responsibilities include:

•     End-to-end ownership of the finance function, ensuring accurate, efficient and compliant day-to-day operations.
•     Working closely with the Finance Director to deliver management reporting, annual budgeting, statutory accounts and audit support.
•     Strengthening cash flow forecasting, treasury oversight, credit control and financial planning to support organisational growth.
•     Principal owner of the charity’s financial controls, policies, procedures and systems, further developing the use of Xero for real-time insight.
•     Supporting the charity’s funding model through strong oversight of restricted funds, grant reporting, contract support and funder compliance.
•    Build financial understanding across the organisation by supporting budget holders and translating financial information for non-finance colleagues.
•     Clear reporting relationship with the Finance Director and line management responsibility for the Finance Administrator.

Essential criteria

The successful candidate should be a fully qualified accountant who is comfortable leading and doing in a small charity environment. They should be technically strong, confident with hands-on financial operations, and able to work credibly with the Finance Director, executive colleagues, trustees, external advisors and non-finance budget holders.

•     Fully qualified accountant (ACA, ACCA, CIMA, CIPFA or equivalent).
•     Proven experience in a finance management role with end-to-end responsibility for a finance function.
•     Strong working knowledge of Charity SORP and charity accounting requirements.
•     Experience preparing management accounts, statutory accounts and board-level financial reports.
•     Strong cash flow management, balance sheet reconciliation and month-end close capability.
•     Experience of restricted funds management, grant reporting and supporting budgets for funding applications or tenders.
•     Confident using accounting systems, ideally Xero, and advanced Excel.
•     Ability to explain financial information clearly to non-specialist audiences and partner effectively with budget holders.
•     Strong leadership and collaboration skills, with the ability to line manage and develop a small finance team.
•     Proven experience in developing and implementing Financial Instructions in a charity setting

Desirable criteria

•     Experience of leading change and process optimisation
•     Experience in a remote or distributed organisation
•     Experience of working with complex stakeholder groups across education, public sector, social impact or donor settings
•     Experience of payroll oversight, VAT returns and finance systems/process improvement would be highly valuable.

Minds Up is a growing mental health and wellbeing training programme for young people, delivered in schools across five London boroughs by South East London (SEL) Mind. The programme aims to increase young people’s awareness of mental health, help them recognise the signs if they are experiencing poor mental health and help them take action to protect their own mental health and boost their wellbeing. 

We are looking for an administrator to help support the effective operation of the Minds Up service. The role holder will need first rate communication skills, with a genuine passion for supporting young people’s mental health. Applicants will be able to demonstrate skills in efficiently managing a central inbox and calendar, as well as experience as first point of contact for public enquiries.

The Administrator will require knowledge and experience of maintaining up to date, accurate records across multiple platforms, and supporting data and report compilation. An ability to work independently but collaboratively, to be proactive and show initiative is essential for this role. 

This role is 18 hours per week, which will be worked over at least 3 days. The hybrid working arrangement would involve at least one day working in the office, and must include Mondays. The working pattern will be discussed and agreed with the successful candidate.

Purpose of the job 

Thames21’s purpose is to deliver increasingly resilient and healthy rivers and landscapes that are closer to their natural state with an abundance of fish and wildlife, empowering and working with people to bring multiple benefits to the natural environment, to individuals and communities.  In recent years we have significantly up-scaled our planning and delivery of river restoration works and by 2027 we will improve 15km of river habitat annually.

To enable this, we are looking for a committed, self-motivated and technically capable River Restoration Manager to lead this work.

Candidates with a proven track record in delivering river restoration and/or habitat improvement projects, including experience managing contractors and in partnership with multiple public and private partners are encouraged to apply. The candidate should be technically strong in one or all areas of river restoration (woody habitat interventions, fish passage etc) and adept at managing complex budgets and reporting to funders. You will have confidence and credibility and be able to engage and influence a variety of stakeholders.

This role is a key position in implementing Thames21 mission and the selected candidate will be part of a dynamic and committed team. You will have the chance to add input and help develop our Five-Year Strategic Plan goals and as a key position in the organisation, you will influence how we deliver our restoration goals. 

Main duties and responsibilities 

Work with Thames21’s Head of Improving Rivers and local stakeholders such as catchment partnerships, councils, Friends groups etc. to develop and deliver river and wetland restoration projects throughout the areas we work.

· Develop detailed plans for the river and wetland restoration in consultation with local and expert stakeholders, meeting local needs and ecological objectives. Ensuring the necessary requirements for Construction, Design and Management (CDM) are covered as part of that process. 

· Obtain all necessary permissions to deliver the projects, potentially including flood defence consent and planning permission. 

· Ensure that the development and implementation of the works are well integrated into wider programmes such as catchment partnerships, evidencing and community engagement.

· Work with project partners to develop and manage tender processes for works which require the use of contractors, the tender processes will need to meet relevant requirements for project partners and funders (including CDM). 

· Ensure that the Team’s RAMS are all correct and up to date. As well as ensuring all H&S documentation is correct and filed within SharePoint.

· Manage contractors to implement projects so they achieve maximum benefits and alignment to project scope.

· In partnership with others, use a range of monitoring tools to record and quantify the impact of different activities. Ensuring this data is captured correctly and presented to the programme funder, to potential future project funders and available to other relevant parties. 

· Support the development and delivery of watercourse Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) projects, including habitat condition assessment, monitoring, reporting and long-term management planning.

· Maintain accurate records and databases, ensuring data integrity and accessibility. 

· Manage and support other staff in the development and delivery of restoration projects. 

· Input to the strategic development of Thames21’s work particularly the Improving Rivers Portfolio.

Local Growth Officer – Romford District
Location: Home-based within Romford District or nearby area, with regular travel and working across venues in Romford District, and occasional travel to Gilwell Park
Salary: £33,476 per year, Band E, Level 3, inc. Of OLW
Hours: Full-time, 35 hours per week - Evening and occasional weekend work required.
Contract: Fixed term – 2 years 

About the role

We’re looking for a proactive and community-focused Local Growth Officer to help grow and strengthen Scouting across Romford District.

Working closely with local volunteers and communities, you’ll support the development of new Scout sections, recruit and support volunteers, deliver engagement events, and help create more opportunities for young people to access skills for life.

This is a varied and rewarding role where you’ll work collaboratively to grow inclusive Scouting provision across the District and support sustainable local growth.

What you’ll do as our Local Growth Officer:

• Support the growth of Scouting across Romford District.
• Recruit, support, and engage volunteers.
• Help open new Scout sections and grow existing groups.
• Deliver community engagement activities, events, and workshops.
• Support inclusive practices and engagement with diverse communities.
• Work with volunteers to develop sustainable growth plans.

About you

You’ll be organised, confident in communicating with a wide range of people, and able to manage projects independently while working as part of a wider team.

You may have experience in:

• Volunteer or community engagement
• Working with young people
• Event delivery or partnership working
• Facilitating workshops or presentations
• Using digital platforms such as Microsoft Teams

Key Responsibilities:

● Operational Management and Governance: Ensure AH services meet quality standards and regulations via Senior Management oversight; identify and manage risks, and stay updated on UN ECOSOC developments.

● Strategic development and external relations: Lead strategic vision and planning, ensuring alignment with business objectives; cultivate networks and relationships to stay informed and advocate for AH services; represent AH locally and internationally, serving as spokesperson and promoting mental health initiatives for women affected by domestic violence.

● Financial Management: Collaborate with the Finance Director to meet financial goals and regulatory standards; oversee budget preparation, financial reporting, and auditing processes; maintain cost control within delegated authority levels.

● Fundraising and business development: Collaborate with trustees to align fundraising strategy with budget and priorities; oversee fundraising activities for optimal returns and sustainable income streams; lead strategic responses to tender opportunities and partnerships, ensuring effective coordination among stakeholders.

● Human Resource Management and Leadership: Inspire and lead staff and volunteers; foster a high-performance learning culture through effective management and communication; establish reporting systems for operational accountability; oversee salary and HR policies in consultation with trustees.

● Project Management: Define project briefs and outcomes for each funded project according to governance standards; approve or seek approval for business cases, receive progress reports, and address risks or issues; make decisions regarding changes in line with established governance protocols.

● Board of Trustees, Advisory Committees and Sub-Committees: Assist the Chair and Secretary in recruiting and onboarding new Trustees; ensure effective support for AH’s Board and Advisory and Sub-Committees; attend Board meetings and facilitate sound advice to the Management Committee, foster communication between Board and operational staff, and ensure the effective implementation of Board decisions.

Required Qualifications:

● Experience: Demonstrated leadership track record, ideally within the VAWG services sector with the ability to strategize, motivate, and guide a team towards achieving organisational goals.

● Skills: Proficient in strategic planning, financial management, and project oversight. Excellent communication skills for fostering positive connections.

● Qualifications: Preferably educated to degree level or equivalent.

You’ll contribute meaningfully to the current Trusts and Grants annual income of circa £2.8m, whilst developing high level opportunities to drive income growth and impact in future years.
