Legal Counsel

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Legal Counsel to join the Chief Executive's Office. Your role is to provide general legal advice; to act as commercial counsel, assisting in reviewing and drafting commercial contracts, ensuring these are fit for purpose and to manage any potential commercial disputes.

Role Requirements

• Providing accurate, relevant and timely advice to the organisation on a wide range of legal topics that relate to the organisation.
• Managing and mitigating legal risks by designing and implementing organisational policies and procedures as well as providing in-house legal templates.
• Ensuring compliance with all laws, rules, regulations and statutory guidance that apply to the business including any changes that may arise from time to time
• Drafting, reviewing, and supporting with the negotiation of various commercial contracts and agreements including retail shop leases.
• Providing timely, accurate and commercially responsive advice to CEO, SLT, senior managers and trustees on both a formal and informal basis.
• Communicating with and managing third-party bodies such as regulators, external counsel or auditors.
• Promoting legal, compliance and risk management best practice throughout the organisation.
• Designing and delivering legal training to the organisation.
• Providing advice on the effective management and protection of The Children’s Trust intellectual property.
• Providing advice on the effective management and protection of The Children’s Trusts employees.
• Providing support with coroner’s inquests including instructing external counsel, liaising with the Coroner’s Office and conveying legally privileged advice to the SLT and trustees as appropriate.
• Supporting colleagues with the development and implementation of a contracts management process, contracts playbook (set of standard templates) and central contracts database.
• Managing the legal services budget.
• Undertaking other or additional duties that are within your skills and abilities, as the organisation may reasonably require from time to time.

Purpose of the Job

This is a key role within a small and busy finance team. The postholder is responsible for a range of transaction processing and finance administration; mostly focused on purchase ledger, sales ledger, assisting with the month-end process, and plays a vital role in upholding HFEH Mind’s financial controls.

Job Description

Purchase and payments

• Ensure all invoices, expenses and credit notes received are processed following the agreed systems and controls.
• Process invoices and expenses into the accounting system.
• Creation of twice weekly and ad-hoc pay runs.
• Process and pay file generated into the bank software.
• Produce and send out remittances.
• Aged creditors review monthly
• Oversee that authorisation processes are being followed by staff.
• Process staff expense claims following the agreed systems and controls.
• Organise and process occasional cash floats and petty cash, ensuring unspent cash is accounted for and all transactions evidenced and recorded.

Card purchases

• Oversee day to day administration of card purchases, ensuring cardholders upload receipts and code transactions by the stated month end deadlines.
• Transfer fully evidenced and coded transactions from credit card template to Sage
• Reconcile transactions to the bank statements

Sales

• Raise sales invoices as requested and per income schedule.
• Sending out sales invoices to customers.
• Creation of a debtors report twice a month and distribute.
• Coordinate with operational staff for the recovery of debt; escalating in line with procedures.
• Posting cash receipts and allocate to the relevant invoice.
• Aged debts management

Banking

• Reconcile banking on a timely basis
• Post direct debit payments

Inbox management and other queries

• Daily review of new messages received into the finance email inbox from staff, suppliers and other parties, dealing with queries directly where possible.
• Be especially vigilant about phishing, Malware / spam emails which are common in generically named inboxes and following all data protection guidance given.
• For more involved queries, liaise with and assist other finance team members to resolve them appropriately; maintain responsibility for ensuring they are resolved.
• Excellent organisation and administration of both inboxes, to ensure the status of queries is clear at all times and appropriate records are kept on file.

Other regular tasks

• Support the Finance Manager with weekly payroll administration, for example communications with staff members regarding timesheets and new starter information.
• Pay cheques and cash into the bank account, including accurate completion of banking.
• Withdraw cash from the bank as necessary
• Lead on ensuring the digital filing structure is adhered to and support the rest of the team with scanning and filing as needed.
• Lead on the archiving of paper documents stored in the office.
• Assist with other tasks appropriate to your level of training where needed, to help ensure that the finance function operates effectively, including providing cover where staff are sick or taking annual leave.
• Work to the month end deadlines agreed within the finance team, to ensure timely production of management accounts and internal reports.

Your new role

As Policy & Insights Manager, you will ensure the College has impact in influencing the future design and delivery of the child health workforce, by leading on a set of priority projects to promote the sustainability and protection of the child health workforce for future generations.

Working within the Workforce & Careers team, the Policy & Insights Manager will be key in supporting colleagues across multiple teams to ensure the College provides expert, evidence-based policy outputs that influences service planning, and promotes the needs of children and the workforce designed to care for them.

Keeping up-to-date with, including horizon scanning developments in, child health policy and NHS service planning, you will maintain an overview of emerging policy themes at national level and will develop a comprehensive engagement plan to ensure members, health service planners, providers and key decision makers in health across the UK are engaged in the advocacy of the child health workforce.

Educated to degree level or with equivalent relevant experience in a similar line of work in health policy, NHS workforce planning or national advocacy, you will have evidence of understanding the critical role of data and service standards within healthcare design, delivery and workforce planning across the UK. 

With excellent project management and stakeholder management skills, you will have demonstrable experience of leading and influencing policy and/or advocacy evidenced by recent outputs relating to child health and/or health services.

This is a crucial and highly impactful role at the College as there are enduring, critical issues in the UK paediatric workforce with understaffed rotas and staff burnout against a backdrop of accelerating demand on acute paediatric services.

A formal project management qualification and experience in line management and/or leadership of a team, along with experience and knowledge of the children’s health sector, would be desirable.

The Workforce and Careers team has a pivotal role within the RCPCH Education and Training Directorate in using research, data and evidence to advocate for the child health workforce. Led by the RCPCH Workforce Planning Board and working closely with senior clinicians, the team oversee a portfolio of paediatric workforce and service configuration data that provides both local and national decision-makers with detailed data investigations, research reports and up-to-date information on key topics impacting paediatric services, such as rota gaps and waiting times. 

The Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health sets and maintains standards for the education and training of all doctors working in paediatrics and child health in the UK. We advocate on child health issues at home and internationally. Additionally, through a variety of activities, the College influences the quality of medical practice for children in hospital and in the community.

The RCPCH has more than 25,000 members and fellows and employs around 200 staff, most of whom work in our London office in Holborn. In addition to this, you would also work alongside your line manager to deliver a comprehensive learning and employment service, that meets client need and is delivered in line with the organisation’s strategic aims, objectives, and outcomes-based approach. We are the Wandsworth representative of the national City of Sanctuary (CoS) charity. This project will support the committee and expand our activities in the voluntary and community sector and elsewhere to build commitment to Sanctuaries in the Borough. Wandsworth has a small but active network supporting refugees. The existing sanctuaries include a theatre, cafe and shop. Our Wandsworth libraries are en route to become sanctuaries and there is active interest from schools and faith groups. The contract is initially for 62 days over one year. Background to the project

The Project is supported by Wandsworth Council as a Borough of Sanctuary and by Lewisham Refugee and Migrant Network (LRMN). Note that for the year 2025 Wandsworth is the London Borough of Culture.

Wandsworth Welcomes Refugees is a charity and operates primarily on a voluntary basis. We aim to make Wandsworth a welcoming place for those seeking sanctuary to feel safe, supported and part of our community.  WWR is part of the City of Sanctuary movement and is the accredited organization in Wandsworth. We work with voluntary and community sector (VCS) and other organisations to encourage and support those wishing to reach out to refugees. We liaise with those interested in finding out more, offering general support, offering general support, or seeking to become accredited with City of Sanctuary. 

Objectives of the project
The project will support the WWR committee activities and objectives. It will expand WWR reach and contacts in the VCS and other appropriate places and organisations. It will raise the profile of the sanctuary movement and encourage active participation by various organisations to create welcoming communities for people seeking sanctuary. Participation can range from an interest and small steps through to becoming accredited with City of Sanctuary.

Wandsworth and Sanctuaries
Sanctuaries include community groups, private organizations, public sector services, and individuals, united in their commitment to supporting those fleeing violence and persecution. Wandsworth is a Borough of Sanctuary, and the accredited organisations at present include a theatre, café and shop. Wandsworth libraries and some faith groups and schools are in the process of applying to become accredited. There is interest from other theatres, shops, sporting facilities and many others. 

Role of the Community Engagement Officer

• Assist the committee to increase its outreach and communication with interested organisations across the Borough

• Join monthly committee meeting to report and plan

• Meet and liaise with the key refugee support organisations in Wandsworth and a small number in other London boroughs 

• Organise an on-line Meet-Up for sharing and support ‘clinics’ (every 4-6 weeks); develop a launch for this event

• Liaise with the committee Events Group fundraising and events activities 

• Liaise with and include lived experience into outreach and activities (WWR has a small advisory group

• Liaise with committee members represented on the Council’s ‘Migration Forum’ 

• Liaise with the organisations accredited with CoS in Wandsworth: CoS asks accredited organisations share activities and learning

WWR is applying for additional funds and if successful will increase the contracted time of the CEO and allow more time for this role and to widen the brief.

What you'll do:
As the Service Manager you will be required to successfully apply for CQC registration for regulated activity and/or registered services within 6 months of appointment. You will ensure that your teams meet all statutory requirements and that all support is delivered in compliance with CQC expectations and Look Ahead's policy and procedures. As our Marketing Automation Manager, you’ll lead the shift from one-off campaigns to automated, personalised, omnichannel journeys using our new Adobe MarTech stack (Campaign, Journey Orchestration, CDP). You’ll ensure the right message reaches the right person, at the right time, via the right channel. 

Working closely with internal teams, you’ll design and optimise journeys, migrate communications from Dotdigital, and uphold brand and compliance standards. Using CRM data, you’ll build segments, apply business rules, and scale personalisation. 

You’ll manage a Marketing Automation Specialist and support the wider Digital Customer Journey Production (DCJP) team by sharing knowledge and building capability. You’ll lead on performance reporting using tools like Google Analytics and Power BI, and champion a test-and-learn approach to keep improving how we engage our audiences.
