Public Law Project (PLP) is looking for a Finance Assistant to help our charity operate effectively. You will play an essential role in ensuring our team have the financial support needed to deliver our essential work. Whilst helping us to create a fair and inclusive society secured by a just and confident state, you will have the opportunity to use and develop your financial skills and experience. Within the finance team you will be working closely with our recently promoted Finance Manager. As you develop in your role at PLP we will provide a pathway through which the role can progress to Finance Officer level. This role includes a variety of responsibilities within day-to-day tasks such as identifying incoming receipts and investigating what they are, to liaising with budget holders for approval of expenses and posting transactions to our accounting system. You will also work with our Finance Manager to support the processing of payroll and have the opportunity to develop sector experience through the administration of restricted grants. PLP support staff have the opportunity to be involved directly in the work of the charity through membership of one of our working groups (our cornerstones) to implement the new strategic plan. This post is conceived as a part-time post (0.4 to 0.5 full time equivalent; 14-17.5 hours per week), and flexible working arrangements will be considered from day one. Brief role description:
The Finance Assistant will provide accountancy and bookkeeping support. This involves inputting purchase and sales ledger transactions, together with cash book and journal entries for three UK entities, using Access financials software.
The role also includes producing weekly payment reports and monthly bank reconciliations for the UK entities, while also processing volunteer and staff expenses.
Other responsibilities include managing accounts queries via our Zendesk ticketing system.
Main responsibilities:

Responsible for Purchase ledger and Sales ledger transactions.

Producing payment runs for Suppliers, Volunteers & Staff Expenses.

Assisting Volunteers, Ambassadors & staff with Financial queries.

Processing Bank transactions and monthly reconciliations.

Reporting into and assisting the Finance Manager with monthly processes.
Essential experience requirements:

Basic accountancy and bookkeeping
-
A minimum of 2 years Bookkeeping

Accounting Software Experience (preferably Access Financials)
Desirable experience requirements:

Knowledge of Access Financials.

Working with a Macbook and knowledge of Google Suite.

Experience of working in a team environment but also being able to work alone.
Professional certification requirements:
AAT Level 2 & 3 Qualification or equivalent is desired but not essential depending on experience.

LRMN's Finance Assistant works closely with Finance Manager (FM) to maintain LRMN’s financial records, ensuring that all transactions are accurately and timely recorded to support the FM producing the reporting data for the management accounts and the monthly bank reconciliation.
As Finance Assistant you will:

Post purchase invoices daily in QuickBooks, aligned with Salesforce records, ensuring PDFs are uploaded and costs correctly allocated

Process petty cash claims in QuickBooks with supporting receipts, accurate budget allocation, and petty cash reconciliation in liaison with the FM

Job Purpose
To support the Finance Manager in delivering accurate and timely financial reporting, including the preparation of management accounts, statutory financial statements, and budget monitoring. The postholder will take full ownership of the charity’s purchase ledger function and banking operations, ensuring robust financial controls and strong supplier and banking relationships.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist with monthly management accounts production.
- Lead on the purchase ledger function, including processing, reconciling, and maintaining supplier accounts.
- Administer the purchase order workflow, actively chasing outstanding invoices and resolving queries with requesters to maintain smooth processing.
- Credit Card – Distribute statements for coding and monitor their return to ensure compliance within the specified timeframe.
- Manage the end-to-end accounts payable process, ensuring timely and accurate payments in line with internal controls.
- Maintain and reconcile bank accounts, including daily banking and month-end reconciliations.
- Support the production of statutory accounts in accordance with the Charity SORP and liaise with external auditors.
- Support the Finance Manager in developing and improving financial systems and procedures, ensuring all documentation remains current.
- Provide financial insight and support to non-finance colleagues across the organisation.
- Assist with payroll processing and pension contributions, as required.
- Ensure compliance with internal controls, financial policies, and relevant legislation.
Person Specification
Essential:
- Part-qualified or qualified by experience in accounting (e.g. AAT, ACCA, CIMA).
- Proven experience managing a purchase ledger and banking platforms.
- Strong understanding of charity finance and the Charity SORP.
- Proficient in accounting software (e.g. Sage) and Excel.
- Excellent attention to detail and analytical skills.
- Strong communication skills and ability to explain financial information to non-finance staff.
Desirable:
- Experience working in the charity or not-for-profit sector.
- Familiarity with restricted and unrestricted fund accounting.
- Experience supporting audits and liaising with external stakeholders.
