DIRECTOR OF VOLUNTEERING

Director of Volunteering at Mercy Ships UK, providing strategic leadership to recruit, engage and mobilise volunteers for its two hospital ships.

Mercy Ships is an inspiring Christian charity delivering free, life-changing surgery to people in Africa with limited access to healthcare. Through its two hospital ships, it brings hope, healing and specialist training to local healthcare professionals. Since 1978, Mercy Ships has worked in more than 55 countries, performing over 122,000 surgical procedures and training more than 55,500 healthcare workers. 

Mercy Ships UK is now embarking on an ambitious growth journey, aiming to double volunteer placements over the next five years. We are looking for an exceptional leader to join Mercy Ships UK as Director of Volunteering. This is a brand-new role created at an exciting time in the charity's growth.

Reporting to the Executive Director and serving on the Executive Leadership Team, you will lead the development of an ambitious long-term volunteering and workforce strategy, inspiring and mobilising medical, maritime and other specialist volunteers to serve on board Mercy Ships' current and future hospital ships. Through your leadership, thousands more volunteers will be equipped to bring hope, healing and life-changing care to communities across Africa.

In this role, you'll have the opportunity to:

• Develop and deliver a multi-year volunteering strategy that builds sustainable pipelines of medical, maritime and specialist volunteers
• Lead the full volunteer journey, from attraction and recruitment through to preparation, engagement, retention and alumni involvement
• Build strategic partnerships with NHS organisations, Royal Colleges, universities, churches, Christian networks and professional bodies
• Provide strategic advice to the Executive Director, Executive Leadership Team and Trustees on volunteering trends, workforce risks and growth opportunities
• Lead, inspire and develop a high-performing volunteering function, setting clear priorities, standards and measures of success
• Act as a senior ambassador for Mercy Ships UK, representing its Christian mission with credibility and influence across the sector

Mind Cymru is Mind in Wales. We won't give up until everyone experiencing a mental health problem gets support and respect. We provide advice and support to empower anybody experiencing a mental health problem and we campaign to improve services, raise awareness and promote understanding.

Mind works across England and Wales with 11 staff at Mind Cymru's Cardiff office. Mind Cymru also works closely with our 15 affiliated Local Minds in all parts of Wales.

The Business Administrator works directly to the Director and supports the Senior Management Team (SMT), and is responsible for the effective running of the office, including dealing with correspondences, diaries and meetings and internal systems, including but not limited to, Microsoft Office, Stakeholder Register, Decision Time, Smartsheet's and Risk Management systems, keeping these up-to-date in support of the SMT.

Key duties and responsibilities

The post holder will:

-Effectively manage the efficient working of the Director's office being the first point of contact and providing administrative support and coordination across all functions, i.e. planning, risk, budget, training and general office activity.

-Organise and plan diaries, to optimise time, making travel and other arrangements as required.

-Be responsible for managing and responding to correspondence to the Director, identifying appropriate action and responses.

-Set up internal and external meetings as required and ensure the smooth running of these by setting dates, ensuring papers go out in good time, booking rooms and refreshments, taking accurate minutes and being proactive in following up actions arising.

-Provide high level customer care in dealing with routine and non-routine enquiries from staff, local Minds, external stakeholders using judgement to take or decide on appropriate action.

-Provide secretariat and administrative support for governance and other fora including Pwyllgor Cymru - the governance sub-committee for Wales; One Mind in Wales - the local Mind network in Wales; and The Wales Alliance for Mental Health - the alliance of leading mental health charities in Wales which is Chaired by the Director of Mind Cymru.

-Be the first point of contact for key members of the above groups and, with the Director, manage relations with them.

-Be responsible for co-ordinating and supporting meetings and be pro-active in ensuring that actions arising from the meetings are followed up.

-In keeping with the level of access and trust commensurate with this role, the post holder is required to maintain and observe an appropriate level of confidentiality at all times.

-Process invoices and make payments via Minds internal accounting processes, being planned and accurate in line with delegated responsibility.

-Work closely with the Social Impact Directorate Executive Assistant when required to ensure coordination with Mind Cymru and the wider Directorate plans, meetings and commitments.

We are seeking a strategic, proactive and relationship-focused Senior Corporate Partnerships Manager to lead the growth and delivery of our corporate partnerships’ portfolio. Key Responsibilities

New Business Development & Pipeline Growth

• Lead the development and delivery of PCR’s corporate new business strategy, identifying, qualifying and prioritising high-value prospects across diverse sectors, including finance, retail, technology, hospitality, manufacturing and professional services.
• Own and manage a structured new business pipeline, ensuring prospects are recorded, stewarded and progressed according to agreed KPIs, income targets and strategic priorities.
• Develop tailored propositions, outreach strategies, cultivation plans and pitch materials that secure interest in Charity of the Year (COTY), strategic partnerships, sponsorship and employee fundraising opportunities.

Corporate Partnership Management & Delivery

• Lead the delivery and account management of high-quality partnership activity across events, campaigns, sponsorships, corporate donations and fundraising initiatives, ensuring partners receive excellent stewardship and clear impact reporting.
• Oversee planning and activation for employee fundraising and engagement activities, working closely with the Events & Community team to maximise partner participation, supporter experience and income.

• Establish partnership governance requirements, including creating partnership agreements, managing renewals, tracking financials and reporting progress against milestones.

• Oversee PCR’s growing Corporate Patient Representatives programme, ensuring effective planning, recruitment, scheduling, logistics and feedback processes are in place.
• Ensure high-quality governance, tracking and stewardship of Patient Representatives to strengthen engagement, manage risk and enable sustainable expansion of the programme.

Content Development & Insight Gathering

• Lead the development of corporate-focused case studies and materials, including themes such as workplace health, EDI resource groups, “men’s health in business” and partner-specific stories.
• Use insights from existing and prospective partners to inform product development, partnership offers, event design, stewardship improvements and future income growth.
• Work closely with Marketing & Communications to develop and update PCR’s corporate partnership webpages and create engaging content for social media.

Representing PCR

Skills and Competencies

Experience

To support the delivery of the community-led violence reduction programme in Salford, working with young people, communities and VCSE partners in Little Hulton.

Now’s an exciting time to join us as we work on a new multi-year strategy and expand the team yet again, bringing in new resource to give the different activity areas space to grow and ensure we can do our best work – contributing to PCR’s lifesaving mission, developing our careers and enjoying work within an ambitious and supportive environment.

This role is new, created to focus on community fundraising which is a growing area with huge potential for PCR. We currently receive significant unsolicited income from our brilliant supporters, but there is a key opportunity to take a more proactive approach to recruiting new community fundraisers, improving their supporter experience and testing new offerings & products. You will work with the team to create and deliver a plan for this new proactive approach and will lead on day-to-day relationship management with fundraisers.

You will also lead the project management and delivery of some community-focused fundraising events. For example,our annual Snowdonia for Science event or testing new PCR-owned products which work for a community fundraising audience. We currently expect the split of time to be roughly 75% on community fundraising and 25% on events, but the two areas will be closely connected, and this split may change over time. We are excited to work with you to develop the direction of this role as the team and portfolio grows.

You will report to the Head of Events & Community and work closely with the whole team, as well as colleagues across PCR. Most of the Events team try to work together once a week when possible at our London office (Chancery Lane) but we have flexible working arrangements, so you can choose to be office based or hybrid. You would be needed to travel to regular supporter events across the UK (many of which are currently in the London/ SE England area) and to some team days in London on an ad-hoc basis. 

Key Responsibilities

Project management and income growth

• Create and lead a plan to implement a proactive community fundraising portfolio, identifying new approaches to test and audiences to target which build towards a long-term sustainable income stream, ensuring alignment with the Public Fundraising strategy.

• Lead on relationship management for your area, spotting potential for fundraisers to have a greater impact with PCR as a whole, and working with colleagues in Philanthropy, Partnerships, Patient Projects & across the organisation to achieve this.
• Carry out stewardship tasks using tools like Mailchimp, GivePanel and JustGiving, for which training will be provided.

Product development and innovation

• Willingness to work occasional evenings or weekends where participation activity requires it, with time off in lieuinline with organisational policy.

The Operations and Outreach Officer supports the smooth running of Cambridge City Foodbank’s operational service, from warehouse to Foodbank Welcome Centres and to Fairbite Food Clubs. Principally community focused it includes supporting good-practice in centres, networking with support agencies, working with visitors/members, and promoting CCFb with community groups

.

● Support the operation of Foodbank’s Welcome Centres and  voucher system – helping develop good-practice, train volunteers, resolve issues and ensure a welcoming service.

● Obtain regular feedback from foodbank visitors via surveys, interviews and work with groups, to help improve services through listening.

● Support the inclusion and development of those with lived experience of food poverty, identifying skills and talents and encouraging their contribution in Foodbank services.

● Update ‘support service’ signposting information - Schedule agency visits to centres, attend meetings to identify / develop support pathways. Create signposting resources. Inform / train volunteers on support services available for Foodbank visitors and Fairbite members.

● Support the operation of Fairbite Food Clubs ‘social supermarkets’ – providing operational support to the Fairbite Network Manager. (Includes occasional evening and weekends)

● Support Warehouse operations – working with the Warehouse & Logistics Coordinator to ensure smooth running of the warehouse. (Inc. lifting, and driving manual & automatic vans)

● Promote the work of the foodbank within the community. Visiting community groups, churches and local businesses to talk about the Foodbank’s work and encourage referral or donation partnerships. (Includes occasional evenings and weekends)

● Assist coordination of the Supermarket Food Drives

● Other activities may be requested from time to time by the CEO, and senior staff, consistent with the job role and the needs of the Charity.

 

Personal Specification:

Technical skills and minimum knowledge:

● Experience of coordinating / managing projects.

● Experience managing and working with volunteers.

● Experience of working alongside people affected by poverty, inequality and hardship.

● Able to work on own initiative to obtain information and appropriately convey to others.

● Confident in the use of IT and MS Word software.

● Able to lift supermarket crates onto shelves and in/out of vans. (10-15kgs)

● Full clean driving licence, and able to drive manual and auto-electric vans.

● Use of car (or cycle) to travel between foodbank and community locations.

Behaviours and competencies:

● Confident in communicating with people from a wide range of socio-economic backgrounds in a friendly, non-judgemental manner, and to convey information and win support.

● Demonstrate a commitment to the values of Cambridge City Foodbank and Trussell Trust.
