Purpose of the role
The CAPSA (Culturally Appropriate Peer Support and Advocacy) Worker role has been specifically designed to support Black people using the secondary mental health system. As a CAPSA Worker, you will provide both Generic Mental Health Advocacy and Independent Mental Health Advocacy (IMHA) to eligible individuals, including people detained under the Mental Health Act(MHA) 1983/2007, conditionally discharged restricted patients, those under Guardianship, and those on Community Treatment orders, as well as individuals considered for section 57 treatments.
You will play a key role in ensuring that the perspectives of Black service users are recognised and respected, addressing their unique and multiple needs, and promoting access to advocacy for all eligible individuals. You will raise awareness of advocacy, rights under the MHA, and the CAPSA service among professionals, individuals, and agencies.
In addition to direct advocacy, you will contribute to service development by supporting an effective administration system and helping evaluate the impact of advocacy for both service users and commissioners.
As part of CAPSA’s race-led approach to systems change, you will also help challenge systemic racism in mental health services, embed culturally competent practice, and promote equitable care within South London and Maudsley NHS Trust (SLaM).

Black Thrive Lambeth has developed a co-designed, culturally appropriate peer support and advocacy service (CAPSA) on behalf of the Living Well Network Alliance (LWNA). CAPSA provides support to Black community members with mental health needs through peer support and advocacy, led by individuals with lived experience or lived understanding of mental health challenges. The service creates a space where experiences are respected, accepted, and valued equally.
The role involves building positive relationships with Black service users; offering one-to-one and group advocacy; supporting self-advocacy; gathering and sharing information to inform decision-making; and preparing monitoring reports and feedback. Advocates ensure that the views, wishes, and needs of Black service users are heard and acknowledged, addressing the impact of racism within traditional mental health services.

How are staff supported to work remotely?
VoiceAbility has a small number of offices. Employees including Team Leaders are homebased for Administration and meetings will be held online as well as in person in the relevant community.

As part of our funding team, you will assess applications for funding and manage grants from our Reaching Communities programme. You will use your local knowledge and experience, and the experience of our grant holders and local stakeholders, to ensure we are making the best decisions on the grants we make. By working closely with people and communities from a defined geographical area, you will understand what matters to them and where our funding can make the biggest difference.
You will gain an understanding of our vision, our commitment to equity and inclusion and our funding programmes. You will be responsible for your own caseload; liaise with grant recipients, visit projects, identify and manage risks, supporting organisations to deliver their projects and measure their impact. You will need to understand and respond to the different needs of our applicants and grant holders by providing advice and feedback and be willing to have challenging but constructive conversations.

We have secured funding from Natural England to explore how private finance and new farm‑based business opportunities can help reduce environmental pressures on the River Clun Special Area of Conservation (SAC) and inform a possible future Protected Site Strategy (PSS) for the area. This project is known as FINCH (Facilitating Investment in Natural Clun Habitats).
What you will be doing:
This exciting role involves managing the day-to-day delivery of the FINCH project, including developing and maintaining strong relationships with participating farmers and external consultants, and ensuring all work is delivered to agreed timescales, budgets and reporting standards.
You will play a key role in facilitating learning and deepening understanding of emerging nature markets, engaging a wide range of audiences including farmers, landowners, colleagues and partners. A central aspect of the role is building and maintaining positive relationships with farmers and landowners to support wildlife friendly farming, habitat creation and maintenance and to encourage land use change where appropriate. You will also provide land management and farm advice, taking practical action across a range of settings to benefit different habitats including riparian corridors and river systems.
Working collaboratively with colleagues, you will contribute to the ongoing development of Land Management Advisory Service, help identify and engage new clients and strengthen support for nature-friendly farming practices. You will also support the development and implementation of systems for evaluation and feedback from landowners and farm managers.
In addition, the role involves delivering practical on-farm measures through third-party funding, supporting farm businesses to access government and environmental assurance schemes and undertaking farm surveys and whole-farm planning focused on the delivery of environmental goods.

How are staff supported to work remotely?
VoiceAbility has a small number of offices. Employees including Team Leaders are homebased for Administration and meetings will be held online as well as in person in the relevant community.
When you need to travel for work, expenses will be paid (mileage or public transport costs).
VoiceAbility offers the usual regular manager one to ones, Staff forums and communities of practice depending on role. Team meetings with a mix of virtual and in person approach.
