Chief Operating Officer

The COO will ensure that ways of working are as effective as possible, enabling the team to meet their ambitions and modernise their internal operations and governance, freeing up capacity for the CEO to build strong relationships with donors and partners working with communities.

Key responsibilities include: 

• Play a central role as a member of the executive team in the overall leadership, strategic direction and governance of the Foundation. 
• Work with the whole team to implement the organisational strategy and business plan.

• Lead on the development of the grant making strategy, ensuring processes are efficient, compliant and deliver an outstanding experience for applicants and donors.
• Oversee the day-to-day operational management of the Foundation, ensuring systems, policies and processes are appropriate and effective.

• Oversee fundholder relationships, demonstrating value and impact whilst overseeing performance against programme delivery commitments.

• Oversee research, insight and impact inputs and ensure effective horizon scanning for emerging trends and technologies.

• Oversee HR and marketing strategies to strengthen the culture and visibility.

As COO, you will have a strong commitment to the mission and values of the foundation, with a passion for making a difference to the lives of people in the West Midlands and Warwickshire. You will need Senior management experience within a nonprofit, charitable or comparable grant-making organisation, evidenced by successful strategic planning and execution.

About the role

In this exciting role you will be responsible for organising activities that significantly grow the numbers of people getting involved in events and fundraising activities in line with plans. You will be the point of contact and provide excellent stewardship to those brilliant supporters. This will include working sensitively with people with experience of the cause, often to do something positive ‘in hope’ of a missing loved one, and actively inspiring more of them to do so. • Support the recruitment of supporters through marketing and promotion to participate in challenge events and other fundraisers.
• Work directly with supporters to help them develop their own fundraising ideas – this will sometimes involve working with people with lived experience of the cause.
• Represent the charity at external events and ensure supporters, their families/friends and volunteers enjoy an excellent experience

We're looking for someone with experience of verging or similar church support work. Good social skills are essential as is the ability to work as part of a team as well as on your own initiative.  The ability to work closely with and relate well to all Cathedral staff, ministry team, congregation, volunteers, visitors, and members of the general public will also be required. 

The two Assistant Vergers and Precinct Officers carry out a wide range of duties under the direction of the Head Verger and Precinct Manager.  Work includes: the careful setting up and delivery of all liturgical matters; ensuring a welcoming, clean, and safe environment for all working in, visiting, or using the Cathedral and Cathedral House and precinct and ensuring the day-to-day smooth running of the Cathedral for all.

Essential experience and skills

This role is part of the Connexional Team Learning Network, supporting, encouraging, and equipping the Church to live out ‘Our Calling’ through worship, mission, evangelism and discipleship. The Learning Network primarily works with lay and ordained leaders, helping them equip others.

This post contributes to Connexional-wide learning and development initiatives, and is specifically aligned with the Wales Synod Cymru District as the Welsh speaking Learning and Development Officer (LDO) and the new West Midlands District following the merger of the current Birmingham District and the Wolverhampton and Shrewsbury District on 1st September 2025. Wales Synod Cymru is a bilingual District of 16 circuits, including the Welsh language Cymru Circuit which covers the whole of Wales, and the West Midlands District has 20 circuits across Birmingham, Wolverhampton and the Black Country, Worcestershire, Warwickshire, Herefordshire, Shropshire and Staffordshire. This is a pivotal role in shaping the future of our supporter engagement. You’ll take ownership of our CRM strategy and management, ensuring data quality and seamless processes that empower our fundraising and communications teams. Through your proven Dynamics 365 CRM skills and experience, you will also lead the charity’s CRM business processes and data quality, collaborating with the key stakeholders across the charity.

This position is based remotely, but there is also an option to work on a hybrid basis at our head office in Norfolk. Where working remotely, you will be required to attend the charity’s head office located in Norfolk a minimum of 6 times per year and this will be at your own expense for travel and accommodation.

About you:
You’ll have advanced knowledge of Microsoft Dynamics 365 and experience configuring and optimising CRM systems. Skilled in the Power Platform (Power Automate, Power Apps, Power BI), you combine strong technical ability with excellent communication skills, making complex information clear for non-technical colleagues. Main responsibilities

Grant Management & Compliance

• Oversee the delivery of the charity’s dedicated grant programmes from pre to post award: Patient Care, Research & Development, Clinical Innovation and Staff Education & Improvement. The post holder will be responsible for circa £2.5M expenditure per annum ensuring they deliver impact for patients, staff and donors (grant values typically range from £2K to <£0.5M).
• Oversee the management of the charity's current grant portfolio; ensuring grants are delivered on time and in accordance with internal processes.
• Ensure compliance with financial obligations (inc. payments, reconciliations and audits) and regulatory obligations (inc. data management, grant award contracts, procurement).
• Ensure grant making processes reflects and champion current best practice.
• Develop and implement a Grants Advisory Committee.

Relationship & Stakeholder Management

• Build relationships with key stakeholders within University Hospital Southampton NHS Trust (UHS), including senior health professionals, executive team members, partners and beneficiaries.
• Work to embed the grants programmes within the hospital environment and work with UHS staff to support them in access funding through working within the hospital and regular visits to clinical areas.
• Act as primary liaison for the Charity’s grant making responsibilities, ensuring alignment with charitable objectives and 2024-2027 strategic mission 
• Provide support to Director of Operations and Resources and the Senior Leadership Team, fostering a collaborative approach to grant programme delivery in tandem with fundraising, communication and art programme goals.
• Represent the organisation at meetings, attending hospital site visits, events and other external facing activities as required.

Strategic Planning & Funding Prioritisation

• Lead the development of the Charity’s grant-making function, working with internal and external stakeholders in identifying key funding priorities that align with the Charity’s mission and future goals.
• Develop strategies for allocating resources effectively and the ongoing review of grant programmes (aiming for continual improvement).

Policy Campaigns Officer

A permanent position has arisen as part of the continued growth of our campaigns work within our friendly Policy, Public Affairs and Campaigns department. About the role

The FDIO will take the lead in developing the reports, dashboards and insight that directly support fundraising growth. You’ll also work hand-in-hand with our Database Manager to improve data quality, support data imports and ensure we are capturing information effectively across the organisation.
