Job Role: Service Manager – MOTS & SHAP

Salary: £34,505 per year

Hours: 37.5 hours per week - The service operates Monday to Friday between 8:00am and 8:00pm, and weekends between 10:00am and 3:00pm. The Service Manager will be required to work a rota of shifts, typically including 8:00am to 4:00pm, 10:00am to 6:00pm and 12:00pm to 8:00pm, Monday to Friday, with some weekend working to support service coverage.

About the Role

As Service Manager, you'll lead our MOTS (Mendip Off The Streets) & SHAP (Single Homelessness Accommodation Programme) services in Shepton Mallet, providing operational leadership and supporting teams to deliver high-quality, person-centred services for people experiencing homelessness and social exclusion.

You'll be responsible for managing day-to-day service delivery, ensuring contractual and organisational standards are met while creating a positive, supportive environment where both staff and clients can thrive. Working closely with internal colleagues, commissioners and external partners, you'll drive continuous service improvement and ensure positive outcomes for the people we support.

We are a local, independent charity based on the Wirral, supporting people living with dementia, their carers, and former carers by providing community-based activities and day trips. We help people stay active, enjoy friendship and creativity, reduce isolation, and feel included, valued and respected.

About Us

The Comedy School draws on the power of comedy to improve wellbeing across community, health, education and criminal justice settings. Since 1998, we have co-designed and delivered workshops, courses and training projects that build confidence, resilience and life skills for socially isolated and vulnerable people. We have worked with individuals with mental health conditions in collaboration with South London and Maudsley Recovery College for 15 years, and in 2023 expanded this work to veterans in partnership with London’s NHS Veterans Mental Health Services. Our Comedy for Veterans programme delivers evidence-based interventions that improve confidence, connections, wellbeing and sense of purpose.

Purpose of Role: The Veterans’ Worker will lead on outreach and peer support within the Comedy for Veterans Project, with a specific focus on engaging veterans from Black and ethnic minority backgrounds, and other communities underrepresented in traditional support pathways. The role aims to ensure inclusive participation, support mental wellbeing, and sustain long-term engagement with the project.

Key Responsibilities: 

• Lead outreach and engagement efforts to promote the Comedy for Veterans Project, focusing on building trust and participation among veterans from Black, ethnic minority, and underserved communities.
• Develop and maintain partnerships with veteran organisations, community groups, and stakeholders to enhance referrals, collaboration, and community presence.
• Provide peer support and mentoring to veterans enrolled in the project, encouraging sustained participation, confidence-building, and shared learning.
• Identify and address participation barriers, including logistical, emotional, or wellbeing challenges, and signpost to appropriate services when needed.
• Support the delivery of workshops and events, working closely with facilitators to ensure activities are inclusive, accessible, and responsive to participants’ needs.
• Collaborate with staff and partners to monitor progress, share relevant participant insights (within confidentiality boundaries), and contribute to a safe, trauma-informed environment.

About the role

At SSAFA, safeguarding is everyone's responsibility. As awareness of safeguarding continues to grow, so does the need to provide expert advise and guidance to colleagues and volunteers who work with beneficiaries facing complex and often challenging situations involving safeguarding concerns.

As a Safeguarding Social Worker, you will play a key role in strengthening safeguarding practice across the charity. Working closely with the Principal Safeguarding Officer and wider Safeguarding team, you'll act as part of SSAFA's Safeguarding Single Point of Contact (SPOC) service, helping to lead the organisation's response to safeguarding concerns and providing expert advice and guidance to colleagues across the charity. You'll also contribute to the continuous development of safeguarding policies, procedures and best practice.

About the team

You will join SSAFA's Social Care Operations Directorate, reporting to the Principal Safeguarding Officer and working as part of a dedicated team committed to ensuring that serving personnel, veterans and their families receive the support they need. Working closely with colleagues across Social Work Services and other specialist functions, you will play a central role in promoting and embedding safeguarding practices throughout the organisation.

About you

You will bring extensive post-qualification experience, gained within safeguarding, together with a sound understanding of current legislation, guidance and best practice.

You will be confident in managing complex safeguarding concerns, providing professional advice and guidance, and supporting colleagues and volunteers to make informed decisions in challenging situations.

You will have the ability to assess risk, exercise sound professional judgement and work collaboratively with a wide range of stakeholders to achieve positive safeguarding outcomes.

Strong communication and interpersonal skills are essential, as you will be building effective relationships across SSAFA and with external agencies, delivering training and supporting colleagues at all levels of the organisation.

You will also be highly organised, with excellent attention to detail and the ability to manage a varied workload while maintaining accurate records.

Our client is a wonderful charity which has been working with and for people with a Learning Disability and autistic people since 1898. Their mission is to work towards being led by people with Learning Disabilities, and they currently deliver a range of high-quality housing, support and activities across local communities.
