About us
We are a world-class visitor attraction and leading science research centre. We use the Museum's unique collections and our unrivalled expertise to tackle the biggest challenges facing the world today. We care for more than 80 million objects spanning billions of years and welcome more than five million visitors annually and 16 million visits to our website.
Today the Museum is more relevant and influential than ever. By attracting people from a range of backgrounds to work for us, we can continue to look at the world with fresh eyes and find new ways of doing things.
We employ 1100 staff in a variety of roles, all united by our vision of a future where people and planet thrive. We need everyone to have the passion and drive to help us with our mission to create advocates for our planet and inspire millions to care about the natural world.
This role is specifically working as part of the Distributed System of Scientific Collections UK programme.
UK natural science collections hold more than 140 million items. These are an unrivalled source of data about how the Earth and its natural systems formed over 4.56 billion years, with the potential to support research that addresses some of the critical issues facing the world, including biodiversity and climate change. They contain evidence of the changes in the natural world including the impact of human life on our planet over the past few thousand years. The scientific, commercial, and societal benefits of these collections are currently constrained by the limits of physical access, and by highly fragmented digitisation efforts with less than 10% digitally available.
DiSSCo UK is a consortium of UK natural science collections, led by the Natural History Museum in partnership with the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) and UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), who are developing a national infrastructure to support the digitisation and use of the UK’s natural science collections to support this critical research.
This will take the form of a 10-year programme focused on digitisation of critical mass of collections as FAIR data, made available through a well-supported backbone of technology infrastructure, with continued development and application of innovative approaches such as greater use of Artificial Intelligence and robotics. Investment of the order of £155m over ten years from 2026-27 is expected to unlock at least a four-fold economic return on investment, as well as efficiency savings for UK and global researchers, and the potential for research innovation and studies that have not previously been possible – underpinning a future in which both people and planet thrive.
Diversity and inclusion matter to us.
Our vision is of a future where both people and the planet thrive. Diversity is one of our core values and we strive to build a workplace where everyone feels a sense of belonging. All new staff who join us learn about the importance of diversity and inclusion to the Museum and how to contribute to creating an inclusive environment.
We know we have more to do, but we are committed to ensuring that everyone who works at the Museum feels they can thrive and feel valued and respected.
About the role
The Collection Assistant plays a vital role in ensuring collections are accessible, well-organised, and prepared in advance of digitisation activities. Working closely with digitisation teams, curators, and collection managers, you will help scale up operations for the accessibility and transparency of important scientific collections.
This position is an excellent opportunity to contribute to a nationally significant programme of work during a key phase of DiSSCo UK’s rollout. We encourage applications from candidates (both internal and external) who fulfil most of the key competencies and are willing to support training and personal development opportunities to fill any knowledge gaps.
This role is based within the Museum’s Digital, Data and Informatics (DDI) Department and reports to the relevant Unit Lead (Entomology or Botany).
This is a fixed term role until 31 March 2028.
About you
Are you passionate about making natural science collections accessible to researchers, policymakers, and the public worldwide? DiSSCo UK is seeking enthusiastic and detail-oriented Collection Assistant to help transform the Natural History Museum’s physical collections into high-quality digital records.
We are looking for a proactive and organised Collection Assistant to support the preparation, care, and movement of natural science collections for digitisation.
We are looking for strong communicators with excellent attention to detail, who can team up with both DiSSCo UK and NHM curatorial teams. You will have a pragmatic approach to problem solving and escalating issues in a timely manner. Above all, you thrive in a team environment, are enthusiastic about collections data and their organisation and place collaboration at the heart of your work.

About the role:
Weekends can be a particularly important time in supported accommodation. With fewer services open and less structure around the day, having a consistent, trusted member of staff available can make a real difference to someone’s wellbeing, confidence and ability to keep moving forward.
As a Weekend Support Assistant at St John’s Mansions, you’ll provide practical, person-centred support to residents, helping them build the skills and confidence they need to live more independently. Working from agreed support and risk plans, you might help someone manage their money or accommodation, access appointments and community services, develop everyday living skills or stay engaged with activities and goals that matter to them.
You’ll also play an important role in keeping the service safe and well coordinated throughout the weekend. You’ll respond to changing needs, safeguarding concerns and unexpected situations, maintain accurate records and make sure important information is clearly handed over to the wider team. You’ll need to be approachable and compassionate, while also confident in setting boundaries, using your judgement and knowing when concerns need to be escalated.
You’ll join an experienced team where you can develop your knowledge of supported housing, safeguarding, recovery-focused practice and working alongside people experiencing multiple disadvantage, with access to training, supervision and ongoing development.
We have two roles available, 1x 37.5 hrs per week and 1x 22.5 hrs per week. Exact working patterns will be discussed in interview.
About you:
- You can build positive, respectful relationships with people while maintaining clear professional boundaries.
- You’re able to encourage and motivate people to build confidence and independence, rather than simply doing things for them.
- You can stay calm, think clearly and respond appropriately when situations change or become challenging.
- You’re organised and reliable, with the ability to prioritise work, communicate clearly and keep accurate records.
- You understand, or are keen to develop your understanding of, homelessness, mental health, trauma, substance use and the barriers people can face when trying to move forward.
About us:
We’re London’s leading homelessness charity – and we get things done.
In a city where hundreds are forced into homelessness every day, our work has never been more needed or more challenging. And we’re not shying away. We’re rolling up our sleeves to make change and helping over 10,000 Londoners every year. We prevent homelessness, provide safe places to live and give people the opportunity to rebuild their lives and transform their futures. And we never give up.
We’re here for Londoners wherever they are on their journey. We start with trust, building relationships that help people feel safe, supported, and ready to move forward. Every day, we put people first in everything we do, challenging injustice and barriers that keep people from the safety, stability and opportunity they deserve. We stand alongside people as they rebuild and shape a future that feels their own.
Joining Single Homeless Project means joining a team that’s bold, compassionate and determined to do better for the people we support and for each other. You’ll work alongside colleagues with lived experience, in a space that’s trans-inclusive, disability-friendly, and actively striving to be anti-oppressive and equitable.
We’re not perfect, but we’re real. We listen. We learn. And we push forward, together. Because this isn’t just a job. It’s a chance to lead with empathy, spark change, and help build a London where no one is left behind.

The role will involve coordinating meetings, briefings and actions; supporting Committee and governance processes; helping to keep key organisational projects on track; and providing practical support across operational activity.
You will also play an important role in the wider rhythm of the organisation, helping to coordinate team meetings, collaborative sessions, away days, staff engagement activity and actions arising from staff feedback.

You will be someone who can anticipate what is needed, take ownership of tasks through to completion and build strong relationships with colleagues, Trustees, advisers, partners and suppliers.
Our team is small, values-led and ambitious. We value collaboration, kindness, accountability and a willingness to get stuck in. Experience in governance or the charity sector would be helpful but is not essential. We are more interested in finding someone with strong EA or senior coordination experience, excellent judgement and the ability to bring structure and pace to a busy environment.
At Rays of Sunshine, we brighten the lives of seriously ill children and their families through magical wishes, hospital services and our wider Wish Community. This is an opportunity to use your skills in a role where the quality of your work will directly support the effectiveness and impact of the charity.
Applications will be reviewed as they are received, with interviews held on a rolling basis on or before 8 October 2026. An immediate start is desirable, so early applications are encouraged.
