Job description

Relief Recovery Worker

Southampton

Zero Hours/ Relief

Pay Rate: £13.38 per hour

About Us

This is an exciting opportunity to join a dynamic Charity and Housing Association. The Society of St James (SSJ) has been working in Hampshire for over 50 years, delivering high-impact, person-centred accommodation services to adults and young people experiencing homelessness, problematic substance use, and mental health problems. We believe that every person is of worth and we are prepared to take risks to house and support the most at-risk and socially excluded members of society.

The Impact You’ll Make

As a Relief Recovery Worker, you will provide crucial, flexible cover across our accommodation services in Southampton. You will step in to help individuals with a history of homelessness get back on their feet by delivering floating and accommodation-based housing support. Working in a trauma-informed way, you will help service users make positive changes, build independence, and access key support services across the city.

Who We're Looking For

We are looking for an adaptable, empathetic, and enthusiastic individual who can thrive in a dynamic support environment. You should be self-motivated, calm under pressure, and deeply committed to supporting vulnerable adults with complex needs.

Essential Skills and Qualities

  • Experience: Previous background working with vulnerable individuals, particularly those experiencing homelessness, mental health issues, or substance misuse.
  • Support Delivery: Knowledge of person-centred support planning, harm minimisation, and trauma-informed care.
  • Safety & Safeguarding: Understanding of risk assessments, managing challenging behaviour, and safeguarding vulnerable adults.
  • Communication & Boundaries: Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to maintain professional boundaries and build trusting relationships.
  • Travel Requirements: A valid driving licence is essential for travel between various locations across Southampton; however, we may consider non-drivers for available shifts in other projects within SSJ.
  • Tech Skills: Proficient IT skills for record-keeping and updating client data systems.

What We Can Offer You

SSJ recognises that our staff are our greatest assets. We value and recognise our team, offering flexible working alongside the satisfaction of directly helping people at risk:

  • Pro-rata annual leave entitlement based on hours worked
  • Flexible, casual hours to fit around your availability
  • Comprehensive induction and ongoing training
  • Counselling, financial, personal support, and health/wellbeing services via our Employee Assistance Programme
  • Cycle to Work scheme
  • Discounted laptops and computers via Jamie’s Computers
  • Access to the Electric Car Scheme
  • Blue Light Card eligibility

SSJ are an equal opportunity employer and we encourage applicants from all backgrounds and walks of life.

At SSJ, we recognise the benefits of a supported workplace. SSJ is affiliated with Unite the Union. To learn more about their membership benefits or to sign up, you can visit their official website.

Application Closing Date: Friday 4th September 2026

Due to the high number of expected applicants, we reserve the right to close this vacancy earlier. Should you not hear from us within 14 days of the closing date, please assume you have been unsuccessful on this occasion.
