The role:

About you:

You’ll already have experience within finance business partnering or management accounting, with a track record of supporting budget holders and reviewing financial performance. Head of Finance and Operations

We are working with an established arts and education charity to recruit a new Head of Finance and Operations.

This is a fantastic opportunity to join a small, ambitious organisation delivering a range of artistic, educational and community programmes. The charity receives income from a diverse mix of public funding, trusts and foundations, individual giving, sponsorship and commercial activity.

Sitting within the Leadership Team and working closely with the Director, this is a genuinely broad role encompassing finance, operations, governance, HR and organisational management.

A key part of the role will be leading the charity’s financial management and planning. You’ll manage the annual budget, produce quarterly management accounts and cash-flow forecasts, oversee VAT returns and work closely with external accountants and auditors on the year-end accounts and audit. We are particularly interested in candidates who have previous experience working within a small charity or similarly sized not-for-profit organisation. This isn’t a role where finance sits in isolation – you’ll need to be comfortable getting into the detail, working across different areas of the organisation and balancing strategic responsibilities with the practical realities of working in a smaller charity.

Strong charity finance experience will therefore be important. You’ll need to understand the complexities of restricted and unrestricted funding, be confident managing and reporting against different funding streams and have a good working knowledge of Charity SORP.

Experience of dealing with funders and their different reporting and monitoring requirements will also be particularly useful.

Alongside finance, you’ll oversee a varied operational remit including building and office management, HR processes, organisational policies and governance. You’ll also support the Board and committees, take responsibility for company secretarial duties and maintain relationships with key funders and stakeholders.

This role would suit someone who enjoys the variety that comes with working in a small charity – practical, organised and collaborative, with the confidence to operate at leadership and trustee level while still being happy to roll their sleeves up when required.

Role Overview:

• Support the Credit Controller with receivables adjustments, write-offs and account queries.
• Apply accounting policies in line with relevant accounting standards and ensure they are followed across the organisation, escalating any issues to the Head of Finance.
• Assist with the preparation of the annual financial statements under the Charities SORP (FRS 102).
• Support the annual audit, preparing working papers and responding to auditor queries.
• Prepare and submit ONS returns.
• Assist with the preparation of budgets, forecasts and cash flow forecasts.
• Business partner with cross-functional teams, providing financial expertise, guidance and training as required.

Key responsibilities

Your responsibilities will include:

• Leading on monthly management accounts, forecasts and budget monitoring
• Providing insightful variance analysis and financial commentary

• Maintaining and reviewing key balance sheet and control account reconciliations

About you

We are seeking a fully qualified accountant with a recognised professional qualification such as ACCA, CIPFA, CIMA, ICAEW, ICAS or equivalent.

You will have a strong management accounting background and experience across areas such as management accounts, forecasting, budget monitoring, reconciliations, month-end and year-end processes.

We are particularly keen to speak with candidates who have experience of:

• Producing management accounts and financial reports
• Budgeting, forecasting and variance analysis
• Financial controls and reconciliations
• Audit preparation and supporting audit queries
• Improving financial systems and processes
• Working accurately to tight deadlines
• Advanced Excel and financial data analysis

Experience within a school, academy trust, charity, public sector or similarly regulated environment would be advantageous. Knowledge of academy finance requirements, ESFA returns and school MIS platforms would also be desirable.

You will be a confident communicator who can explain financial information to non-finance stakeholders, challenge appropriately and build strong relationships across an organisation.

About the role 

As our Management Accountant, you’ll play an important role in helping Compassion in World Farming make well-informed financial decisions. Working within our Finance Business Partnering team, you’ll provide accurate and timely management information, support budgeting and forecasting, and help ensure our financial data, coding and reporting structures are robust and reliable. 

As part of this new role, you’ll be responsible for:

• Management reporting and analysis - Preparing monthly management accounts, variance analysis and clear financial commentary.
• Budgeting and forecasting - Supporting annual budgets, periodic forecasts and monthly staff cost monitoring.
• Financial data integrity - Maintaining coding structures, grant records and reporting frameworks in Netsuite.
• Stakeholder support - Helping budget holders and non-finance colleagues understand financial performance, coding and reporting requirements.
• Process improvement - Identifying practical ways to improve reporting, processes and financial insight.

About you

To succeed as our Management Accountant, you’ll bring strong experience in management accounts, budgeting, forecasting and financial analysis, together with the confidence to explain financial information clearly to colleagues who may not have a finance background. 

Skills and experience you’ll need to bring:

• Experience of producing, reviewing or supporting monthly management accounts, including variance analysis and clear commentary.
• Experience of supporting budgeting and forecasting processes, and explaining movements against budget.
• Experience of working with accounting or finance systems, ideally Netsuite or a similar system.
• Strong Excel skills, including lookups, pivot tables, data sorting and analysis.
• Excellent attention to detail and accuracy, with a proactive approach to identifying and correcting errors.
• The ability to communicate financial information in a clear, accessible and supportive way to non-finance colleagues.
• Experience of charity finance, restricted and unrestricted funds, grant coding or donor reporting would be beneficial.

The role is required for 2 days per week, for a period of 6 months.

The Opportunity
Working closely with the Chief Operating Officer and Director of Research and Training, you will play a pivotal role in ensuring financial integrity across the organisation. You will combine strategic financial planning with hands-on financial oversight, leading on budgeting, reporting, forecasting and audit management.
This role would suit an experienced finance professional who enjoys working in a mission-driven, international environment and is comfortable operating both strategically and operationally.

Key Responsibilities
Strategic Financial Leadership

About You
We're looking for an experienced and proactive finance professional who can provide confidence, rigour and strategic insight in an international and fast-moving environment. 

You will bring:

• Significant experience as a Financial Controller, Finance Manager, Head of Finance or similar senior finance role.
• Proven experience managing audits and acting as the lead contact for external auditors.
• Strong experience in financial planning, budgeting, forecasting and management reporting.
• Excellent analytical and communication skills, with the ability to present financial information clearly to non-financial audiences.
• A collaborative approach and the confidence to work closely with senior leaders and Board members.

Essential

• Demonstrable experience managing financial operations and taxation matters in the Netherlands.
• Strong understanding of Dutch accounting standards, tax requirements and regulatory compliance.
• Familiarity with Exact accounting software.
