Julie’s Bicycle is seeking a visionary, collaborative and values-led Chief Executive to lead the organisation into its next chapter.
About Julie’s Bicycle
Julie’s Bicycle is a pioneering not-for-profit organisation mobilising the arts and culture sectors to take action on the climate crisis. For nearly two decades, we have been at the forefront of the creative climate movement, working to put culture and creativity at the heart of climate action. We believe culture has the power to challenge, inspire and move people; to shape how we think, feel and act; and to help transform our future now.
Our work brings together cultural and environmental expertise to support practical action, build leadership, inform policy and strengthen collective impact. Through our programmes, tools, training, consultancy, campaigns and partnerships, we support artists, creative organisations, policymakers and changemakers to respond to the climate, nature and justice crises with confidence, imagination and purpose. To date, Julie’s Bicycle has worked with thousands of organisations and individuals, in the UK and globally, helping to equip people, places and policies with the knowledge and power to drive sustainable change.
Why this opportunity has arisen
This is a defining moment for Julie’s Bicycle. After 19 years of inspirational founding leadership, our Founder and Chief Executive, Alison Tickell, is stepping down from the role. As we approach our 20th anniversary, Julie’s Bicycle is renewing its strategy and theory of change. The climate, nature and justice crises continue to evolve, and so too must the leadership, partnerships and solutions needed to create meaningful change. This creates a significant opportunity for a new Chief Executive to honour a powerful legacy while shaping a bold, clear and ambitious next chapter for the organisation.
What we are looking for
We are looking for an exceptional Chief Executive who can provide strategic and organisational leadership, strengthen Julie’s Bicycle’s voice and influence, and ensure the organisation continues to deliver impact at the intersection of culture and climate. The successful candidate will work closely with an experienced Board and dedicated staff team to refine and deliver our next phase of strategy, sharpen our priorities, build sustainable income and communicate our distinctive value with clarity and conviction.
This is both an outward-facing and deeply organisational role. Externally, our next Chief Executive will be a visible and credible advocate across culture, climate and environmental networks, able to build partnerships, engage funders and policymakers, convene people around shared purpose, and speak persuasively about the role of arts and culture in responding to the climate crisis. Internally, they will inspire, empower and support a talented and values-led team, strengthening leadership capability, systems, decision-making and accountability while protecting the inclusive, creative and collaborative culture that makes Julie’s Bicycle special.
We are keen to hear from experienced senior leaders with a track record of organisational and people leadership, strategic development, partnership building and income generation. We expect our CEO to demonstrate a strong understanding of the relationship between culture, climate and wider social and environmental change, and to bring a deep knowledge and experience of the UK cultural landscape and key institutions and stakeholders, and/or a deep knowledge and experience of national and international climate policy and advocacy environments. However, we are also keen to hear from you if you are passionate about the intersection of culture and climate/environmental issues, but would benefit from a period of phased support to fully immerse yourself in the breadth of issues, sectors and contexts in which JB operates.
This is an opportunity to lead a pioneering organisation with purpose and ambition: protecting what makes Julie’s Bicycle distinctive, strengthening the foundations that will help it thrive, and turning the power of culture into meaningful and lasting climate action.

Human Kind exists because vulnerability isn't the exception — it's part of being human. At some point, all of us need connection, kindness, and somewhere we belong. We're a community organisation built around a welcoming café, a programme of events and activities, and — soon — a peer-led listening service, all designed to make sure nobody in Billericay has to face difficult moments alone.
We're now looking for an experienced operational leader to help take Human Kind into its next chapter.
The Opportunity
This is a genuine leadership role, not a café management job. You'll be responsible for the people, programmes and day-to-day operations that make Human Kind work — from our community café and food offer, to family activities, events, partnerships and volunteers.
You'll move between the strategic and the practical: one morning working with trustees on priorities, the next developing a team member, the next solving an operational problem or meeting a potential partner.
You won't be expected to do everything yourself. You'll build a team where people understand their responsibilities and take ownership — while you focus on the decisions, relationships and direction that only you can provide.
Be clear-eyed about what the first year looks like: it's about getting a firm grip on the operation, building structure and earning trust — before it becomes about bigger ambitions. If you enjoy bringing order to a busy, people-first environment and want to see the results of your work in your own community, this is a rare opportunity to make a lasting difference.
About Human Kind
Human Kind is a community organisation based in the heart of Billericay. We believe food, connection and kindness can bring people together and build a stronger community. Our work includes:
We've built strong foundations. We're now focused on the leadership, structure and sustainable operating model needed to take Human Kind into its next phase — and this role is central to that.
What You'll Do
Your First Year
Your early months will be about getting a clear, honest picture of what's working and what needs to change, and establishing who owns what across the team. From there, you'll strengthen your team's ownership, tighten up reporting and systems, and start building toward a more coordinated, sustainable programme of activity — bringing your own ideas and experience to how that takes shape.
What We're Looking For
Experience with volunteers, café or hospitality operations, or charity-sector leadership would be a bonus, but isn't essential — what matters most is your ability to lead people and build something better.
The client requests no contact from agencies or media sales.
Responsibilities
People and Team Leadership
Line manage the Fundraising Manager, providing regular supervision, support, and performance development
Lead the planning and delivery of all-hands meetings and team development programmes, fostering a collaborative and high-performing team culture
Maintain oversight of team resource mapping, ensuring capacity is well-managed across the organisation
Impact and Evaluation
Lead the design and ongoing development of Routes' impact evaluation framework, ensuring it captures meaningful data about the difference our work makes
Oversee the collection, analysis, and interpretation of impact data throughout the year, using findings to inform programme development and organisational decision-making
Write and produce Routes' annual impact report, communicating our work and outcomes compellingly to funders, partners, and the wider sector
Income Generation
Support the Fundraising Manager with grant applications, funder relationships, and income generation activity as needed
Manage the sales pipeline for the mentoring programme, including prospecting, relationship development, and conversion of corporate and organisational clients
Source and manage CSR partnerships, building relationships with corporate partners and ensuring existing partnerships are well-stewarded
Operations
Lead on the creation, review, and approval of organisational policies, ensuring Routes' policies are up to date, legally compliant, and reflective of our values
Oversee day-to-day office administration and organisational housekeeping
Manage organisational insurance, ensuring appropriate cover is maintained and reviewed annually
Oversee staff IT, laptops, phones, and software subscriptions, including troubleshooting and managing supplier relationships
Draft and manage organisational contracts, including supplier, partner, and service agreements
Lead on the conversion of Routes from a CIC to a CIO, working with legal advisors, the board, and relevant statutory bodies to manage the process
Strategy
Contribute to the development and delivery of Routes' organisational strategy, bringing insight from your areas of responsibility
Lead on the development and implementation of Routes' income generation strategy, working closely with the Fundraising Manager and Co-CEO
Communications
Write thought leadership pieces for the Routes blog, contributing to Routes' voice and visibility in the sector
Leadership Development and Learning
Take ownership of your own professional development, using the annual training budget to attend relevant training, events, and sector learning opportunities that strengthen your contribution to Routes and the wider sector
There are some areas of responsibility that sit under the other Co-CEO, but we would expect the person in this role to maintain some oversight or involvement in to enable smooth co-working between the roles. These are:
Safeguarding: Act as Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) when required, ensuring Routes meets its safeguarding obligations and that staff and volunteers are appropriately supported
Finance: Attend and contribute to monthly finance meetings, planned by other Co-CEO, maintaining a clear understanding of the organisation's financial position and flagging any concerns to the Co-CEO and board
Governance: Attend board meetings, providing updates on areas of responsibility and supporting the board to fulfil its governance function
Person Specification
Experience
Experience in a senior leadership role within the charity, social enterprise, or public sector
Demonstrable experience of managing and developing staff, with a coaching and supportive leadership style

Experience leading teams in challenging, fast-changing and resource-constrained environments
Experience of working with or for communities facing marginalisation, discrimination, or structural disadvantage, and a deep understanding of the barriers refugee and asylum seeking women face in the UK

Strong written communication skills, with the ability to write compellingly for different audiences

Highly organised, with the ability to manage a broad and varied portfolio without dropping the ball
Comfortable working with data, both quantitative and qualitative, and using it to draw meaningful conclusions
Strong relationship-building skills, with the ability to build trust quickly with a wide range of stakeholders including funders, corporate partners, board members, and colleagues
Sound understanding of CIC/charity governance and good practice, and the ability to make confident decisions independently while knowing when to consult
Values and Approach
Deep personal commitment to gender equality, racial justice, and the rights of refugees and asylum seeking people
Understanding of the importance of implementing trauma informed practices and a commitment to accessible working practices for all
A collaborative leadership style that builds trust, shares power, and brings out the best in others
Comfortable with ambiguity and change, able to hold complexity without becoming overwhelmed by it
Honest, transparent, and accountable, someone who says what they mean and follows through on commitments
Energised by working in a small, values-led organisation where everyone mucks in
Additionally, it would be desirable for you to be trained as a Designated Safeguarding Lead, but training on this can be provided.
A Note on Experience
We know that leadership experience takes many forms, and that people from marginalised communities, including those with lived experience of the asylum system, are often underrepresented at senior levels in the charity sector despite having exactly the qualities and understanding this role requires. We warmly encourage applications from people who may not follow a conventional career trajectory but who can demonstrate the skills, values, and commitment we are looking for. If you are unsure whether your experience is the right fit, please do get in touch before applying, we would rather have that conversation than miss out on the right person.

The Environmental Funders Network (EFN) is a community of funders, philanthropy advisers, and fundraisers working together to transform environmental philanthropy and support more impactful funding for the environment in the UK and around the world. Through its research, networks, convening and programmes, EFN helps the environmental funding community to learn, connect and act effectively together, strengthening collaboration and increasing the scale and impact of environmental funding.
EFN is now seeking a new Executive Director at an important moment. Environmental philanthropy has grown significantly, creating a larger and more diverse funding community and real opportunities for greater impact. At the same time, environmental action and those who fund it are operating in an increasingly complex and contested political and public environment. As EFN finalises its next strategy and turns to implementation, there is an opportunity to become more intentional about where it can add greatest value, sharpen its priorities and strengthen how it understands and demonstrates the outcomes and longer-term impact of its work.
The Executive Director will provide strategic and organisational leadership, working closely with the Board and a talented multidisciplinary team (13 staff representing 9.3 FTE) to translate EFN's strategy into focused action. They will provide clear and confident internal leadership, setting priorities, making thoughtful decisions and creating the conditions for the team to thrive, while strengthening EFN's financial sustainability and organisational resilience. They will foster a culture of reflection, learning and improvement, ensuring evidence and insight inform EFN's priorities and programmes.
Externally, the Executive Director will be a compelling ambassador and outstanding relationship-builder, able to build trust across a diverse community – from major international foundations to smaller funders, philanthropy advisers, fundraisers and NGO leaders. They will attend daytime and evening events regularly in London and periodically around the country and will bring the environmental literacy and political awareness to understand the changing context in which funders are operating, using EFN's distinctive role as a connector to build relationships, share knowledge and enable collaboration and collective action.
The ideal candidate will bring strategic leadership experience and can turn vision into focused delivery. They will be a skilled relationship-builder - able to listen, convene, influence and galvanise a diverse community around a shared purpose - low-ego and collaborative in approach. The successful candidate will have led and developed high-performing teams with an inclusive culture, embedding a genuine commitment to justice, equity, diversity and inclusion. You will combine strong organisational, financial and governance skills with an entrepreneurial mindset, and have experience generating income and building sustainable partnerships. Experience within philanthropy, foundations or membership networks is highly valuable but not essential.
Above all, EFN is looking for someone with a genuine passion for environmental and social change, who understands the interconnectedness of today's environmental challenges and is excited by EFN's distinctive role: helping funders and fundraisers learn from one another, strengthening collaboration, and increasing the impact of environmental philanthropy.
This is an exceptional opportunity to lead an influential network at a formative point in its development, helping EFN give the environmental funding community the knowledge, networks and agency to learn from one another, collaborate more effectively and increase the impact of environmental philanthropy.
