YEF Detached Youth Work Project Lead
Relationships change lives.
At M13 Youth Project, we believe every young person deserves trusted adults who believe in them, walk alongside them and help them discover who they are, what they have to offer and the difference they can make. For over 30 years, we've built those relationships through detached youth work - meeting young people where they choose to be, listening deeply and creating opportunities for belonging, belief and hope.
We're now looking for an experienced Detached Youth Work Project Lead to join our team and play a central role in one of the UK's most ambitious detached youth work research pilots.
M13 is leading the Greater Manchester consortium delivering the Youth Endowment Fund (YEF) Detached Youth Work Pilot. The Pilot aims to build a strong evidence base for researching detached youth work, combining outstanding frontline practice with rigorous evaluation to shape the future of youth work nationally.
Reporting to the Founding Director, you'll provide the day-to-day leadership of M13's delivery of the pilot. You'll lead a small team of detached youth workers, coordinate operational delivery across intervention neighbourhoods and ensure the project is delivered safely, consistently and in line with the YEF Shared Practice Model and research requirements.
This is first and foremost a practice leadership role. You'll spend much of your week out in parks, streets and neighbourhoods, building trusted relationships with young people through high-quality detached youth work. Alongside this, you'll supervise and support colleagues, oversee monitoring and reporting, build positive relationships with community members and partner organisations, and, together with the Founding Director, work closely with the Centre for Evidence and Implementation (CEI) and consortium partners to ensure the successful delivery of the project.
We're looking for someone who is an experienced detached youth worker, confident leading others and passionate about relational practice. You'll be organised, reflective and proactive, with experience of supervising staff, coordinating projects, maintaining high-quality records and working collaboratively with partners. Most importantly, you'll share our belief that relationships are the foundation for meaningful change.
This is a 35-hour per week, office- and community-based role. (M13's full-time week is 37.5 hours). Your week will include six detached youth work sessions (three afternoons and three evenings), alongside team leadership, partnership working, supervision, monitoring and project coordination. Some flexibility can be offered around when office-based work is undertaken, where operationally possible.
In return, we offer a supportive, reflective and values-led working environment, regular supervision, ongoing professional development, a generous employer pension contribution, TOIL for out-of-hours working, additional Christmas gift leave and the opportunity to contribute to nationally significant research that could shape the future of detached youth work.
If you're an experienced detached youth worker ready to combine excellent frontline practice with leadership, learning and innovation, we'd love to hear from you.
Please submit your CV together with answers to the five questions below, limiting your response to 250 words per question. Please do not exceed the word limit as doing so may affect the scoring of your answers. We encourage you to use examples from your own practice, explaining not only what you did, but why you made particular decisions and what you learned.
We use a blind recruitment process to help ensure fair and equitable recruitment. Applications will be shortlisted against the Person Specification, so please demonstrate how your skills, experience and values meet the requirements of the role. We welcome examples from paid or voluntary roles, and recognise that many skills are transferable.
We exist to be a consistent, trusted presence in communities experiencing deep-rooted inequality.
The client requests no contact from agencies or media sales.
About the role:
Feeling safe shouldn’t stop mattering when the day team goes home. At St John’s Mansions in Islington, you’ll provide a calm, consistent and reassuring presence throughout the night, helping to make sure clients feel safe, respected and supported in their home. You’ll often be the first person someone turns to if something goes wrong overnight, so the way you respond can make a real difference.
As a Night Support Assistant, you’ll take responsibility for the safe and secure running of the service during your shift. You’ll manage access to the building, complete regular patrols and health and safety checks, monitor security, respond to safeguarding concerns and emergencies, and provide a first response to clients who need help. You’ll also support emergency placements where required and make sure significant incidents, concerns and actions are recorded clearly and handed over to the day team.
This is a role that calls for sound judgement, resilience and the confidence to stay calm when situations become challenging. At times you may be lone working, with buddy arrangements and SHP’s out-of-hours management support in place. Throughout your work, you’ll take a person-centred, psychologically informed and strengths-based approach, balancing safety and appropriate boundaries with dignity, choice and independence.
We have two Night Support Assistant opportunities available: one working four nights per week, Monday to Thursday, and one working three nights per week, Friday to Sunday, night shifts are 10pm - 08.15am. Whichever pattern you join, you’ll be part of the wider St John’s Mansions team, with regular supervision, training and opportunities to continue developing your knowledge and practice.

About us:
We’re London’s leading homelessness charity – and we get things done.
In a city where hundreds are forced into homelessness every day, our work has never been more needed or more challenging. And we’re not shying away. We’re rolling up our sleeves to make change and helping over 10,000 Londoners every year. We prevent homelessness, provide safe places to live and give people the opportunity to rebuild their lives and transform their futures. And we never give up.
We’re here for Londoners wherever they are on their journey. We start with trust, building relationships that help people feel safe, supported, and ready to move forward. Every day, we put people first in everything we do, challenging injustice and barriers that keep people from the safety, stability and opportunity they deserve. We stand alongside people as they rebuild and shape a future that feels their own.
Joining Single Homeless Project means joining a team that’s bold, compassionate and determined to do better for the people we support and for each other. You’ll work alongside colleagues with lived experience, in a space that’s trans-inclusive, disability-friendly, and actively striving to be anti-oppressive and equitable.

We’re looking for a creative, passionate, skilled content creator and campaigner, to produce content for our social media channels which informs, persuades and mobilises our audiences to take action. Reporting to our Social Media Campaigns Manager, you will create campaigning content which will drive change in the UK, making our country fairer, more respectful and more sustainable.
This role will have a particular focus on producing video content – both as a presenter and editor. We are looking for creators who are experienced in producing content for Instagram Reels and TikTok, knowledgeable about social media trends, comfortable on camera and adept at producing vertical video — and want to use those skills to make a difference on the biggest issues impacting people’s lives across the country.
This job is for you if you’re passionate about making the country fairer, more respectful, and more sustainable – and have the skills and drive to create content and develop social media-led campaign tactics which make people want to get involved, join us and take action. We’re looking for someone who has both the content creation skillset and knowledge of current affairs to translate complex issues into entertaining content. You will have a collaborative approach, be able to build strong relationships across teams and be comfortable working in a fast, reactive environment, where content is often developed, crafted and published in response to breaking news.
There are no formal education requirements for this role. As long as you can show us that you have the skills, we don’t mind where you got them from! We are looking for someone who understands our organisation and theory of change, and shares both our passion for great content and our determination to change the country for the better.
You will have worked at or with similar organisations or built your own profile creating content around social and political issues. You’ll have experience creating both graphic and video content and knowledge of the design and editing tools needed to create social media content.
You will be a sharp copywriter, skilled in writing social native copy and have excellent knowledge of social media trends. You will likely have experience presenting video content – or are keen to develop this skillset and create more content on-camera.
You will have a keen interest in social media, stay across the ever changing social landscape, have lots of content creators you follow and can draw ideas and inspiration from, and believe in the ability to use social media to genuinely change minds and make people take action which matters.
You’ll be passionate about campaigning and have a sharp understanding of the power of social media to mobilise large numbers of people in support of campaigns. As part of this team you’ll regularly be involved in developing campaign tactics as well as content, and helping to upskill the wider team on the opportunities that social media campaigning presents.

About us
38 Degrees is a community of more than a million people who – in a moment away from their busy days – take small actions on issues they care about, which all add up to something bigger, a movement for a better Britain for everyone who calls our country home.
A Britain where we all get a fair chance in life and where the place we were born, or the area we live in, doesn’t decide that chance. Where we protect our planet and hold those in power to account for doing the same, and where we are treated, and treat one another, with respect.
In the space of a week, millions of supporters could be campaigning on anything from protecting our NHS and stopping cuts to Universal Credit, to saving local green spaces and protecting our democracy.
38 Degrees is fiercely independent. We are primarily funded by small donations from hundreds of thousands of members of the public from all over the UK. This independence means we never have to hold ourselves back from taking on those with power and can truly listen to our supporters.
Benefits of working for 38 Degrees
38 Degrees’ approach to total rewards (salaries, rewards and benefits) is rooted in our Compensation Philosophy which defines our principles and the criteria to ascertain whether decisions on pay and reward meet those principles – our ultimate aim is to attract and retain a talented, driven team, and reward all of us for the impactful work we do in a way which is fair, equitable and sustainable, based on this philosophy and our vision to make the UK fairer, more respectful and more sustainable.
38 Degrees employee salaries, rewards and benefits are benchmarked against the UK NFP sector.
38 Degrees’ culture is honest, kind, supportive, courageous, and respectful. We move fast, and frequently change plans to respond to events. We work hard but we also have fun.
We regularly enjoy team away days and social hours.

And thanks to our flexible home working approach and network of offices, we have a staff team that is increasingly based across the UK. A third of us live outside London. And most importantly, you actually want to build something — not just keep an existing programme ticking over.
Experience with trusts and foundations fundraising, youth or family support work, or a background moving from a founder-led organisation toward distributed leadership would all be a bonus, though none are essential.
