We are seeking a qualified Solicitor or Legal Executive, to fill the post of Employment Law Manager. We also welcome applications from paralegals with 5 years experience who wish to qualify as a solicitor (England and Wales).

You will be required to provide complex professional legal advice on employment law matters to our management team, national executive committee and members. Managing a team of junior colleagues and supporting their complex casework, you will advise on collective employment law matters and review first stage complaints.

Successful candidates for the Employment Law Manager will be able to demonstrate:

• Proven experience in an employment law field, or qualified solicitor from any UK jurisdiction.

The main duties of the Employment Law Manager role include:

• Delivering legal guidance and representation on employment law issues.

• Advising the union on legal aspects of bargaining or campaigning matters.

You will be committed to professional development, through training, appraisal and the use of technology, you will be able to show how you maintain and share your up-to-date knowledge of employment legislation. An understanding of the political processes in the UK and the role and work of trade unions is essential.

Main duties and responsibilities

1. Key areas

• Undertake training to complete the SQE or specialism in employment law
• Assist in legal research into past cases and documents
• Draft and prepare claims or other legal documents
• Assist in providing legal advice to SMT, NEC, members
• Keep up to date with new developments in employment legislation
• Assist in providing employment law briefings to PCS staff about changes in employment legislation
• Advise members and Reps on wrongful termination and unfair dismissal claims, including reviewing dismissal procedures and advocating for members' rights
• Assist members and reps in cases of workplace discrimination, harassment, or retaliation based on factors such as age, gender, race, disability, or other protected characteristics
• Assist with the development of the Unions policy objectives including the PCS planning process
• Assist with leadership in delivering the unions Legal and Employment Rights strategy
• Provide assistance with the unions bargaining, organising, campaigning, equality, learning and digital agendas
• Manage people and resources in the Legal and Employment Rights Unit
• Provide advice to relevant committees including assisting in the preparation and presentation of reports

2. People Management

The Unifrog platform

Over the last 12 years, the Unifrog platform has grown enormously from its starting point as a simple tool to help students pick their UK university courses and apprenticeships. It now helps young people from 4 years old up to explore their interests, record the great things they’ve done, compare every post-16 and post-18 course in the UK and every undergraduate programme taught in English in the world, find and organise work experience, and draft their application materials.     • Managing inbound product requests that have been logged on our Productlane account;

    • Updating Linear with developments that we aim to work on, are working on, or have launched;

You’ll become an expert in:

• How the Unifrog platform works behind the scenes, with a particular focus on how complex datasets feed into the platform and power our tools;

• Technical tools that are vital for school partners (e.g. SSO and Wonde);

• The needs of all our different user types, including students, teachers, school groups, universities, employers, and parents;

• How to navigate the platform as a user of each type;

• Finding opportunities to improve our platform, particularly when data processing is key to success.

• How our development process works, our product tech stack, and what is needed to make sure it runs as efficiently and effectively as possible;

 

You’ll be part of the team that:

• Collates feedback on the platform, deciding which changes to move ahead with, and how;

• Translates user feedback into clear, actionable requirements;

• Investigates potential bugs and comes up with suggested solutions;

• Communicates platform changes to the Unifrog team;

• Answers queries about the platform from colleagues.

 

Working together

You’ll regularly be working with:

• The Platform and Data Manager, who will support you in your development administration and project responsibilities;

• The Data team, of which you will be a part, alongside whom you will work to maximise the impact of your projects;

• Unifrog’s two co-founders, who lead on the development of the Unifrog platform;

• User-facing colleagues, to understand what our users are asking for, as well to let them know what things have changed on the platform.

We are seeking a project coordinator to contribute research, project management and stakeholder management skills to support key projects advancing the consumer voice in the sustainability transition. This is a critical role in our team, and it comes with significant development opportunities.

The Research and Events Coordinator will work alongside the Strategy and Projects Leads for Clean Energy Futures to manage engagement with the communities of practice that feed into our Clean Energy Futures work. This includes the Member Taskforce on Energy and the Multi-stakeholder Expert Group, comprised of cross-sector experts from business, academia and government.

The Coordinator will also contribute to project delivery through research into energy policy and practice and report writing, as well as joining programme strategy discussions in a strongly collaborative and non-hierarchical environment. We also anticipate the Coordinator working closely with our Insights Lead to conduct desk research and stakeholder interviews to deliver insights components of Sustainability Programme workstreams. 

After an initial 6-month period focused on Clean Energy Futures, there will be opportunities for the Coordinator to broaden their remit to other projects and topics within the Sustainability Programme.

Reflecting this breadth and the opportunities to grow, the Coordinator will initially report into the Director of Sustainability, who will provide guidance and mentoring support.

The ideal candidate is a highly organised, proactive and energetic individual who can demonstrate their knowledge and professional interest in sustainability and an understanding of the importance of consumers in the transition. Support the Insights Lead with consumer insights research and stakeholder interviews. 

• Community coordination and meeting organisation: Support organisation of in-person and online stakeholder workshops or meetings including supporting the development of agendas, invite lists and online and in-person logistical arrangements where needed. This may include project related meetings and representation at other events and high-level global moments such as COP31. 

• Communications support: Draft, provide input to, and disseminate communications (e.g. meeting minutes, research reports, topic briefings) to project stakeholders, ensuring accurate, timely and appropriate communications. 

• Strategic inputs: Contribute your thoughts and ideas to development and delivery of the clean energy futures and wider sustainability work programmes and strategy as needed. 

The overall work of Consumers International: 

• Work collaboratively with colleagues across the organisation to support the implementation of the Strategic and Business Plans.

• Contribute as needed to team meetings and other Consumers International-wide communication and outreach. 

• Embody the culture and values of Consumers International and help us deliver on those.
