About the role
We have an exciting opportunity to join our team in London as a Data Engineer.
This role will enable us to get the most out of our data and systems, by shaping our modern Microsoft Fabric based data platform, demonstrating our impact and driving decision making.
As a small organisation with a low volume, but a high diversity of data, we’re looking for someone who can develop end to end solutions - with a range of skills such as extraction, transformation, modelling, reporting, analysis, requirements gathering, training and data communication. We don’t expect the successful candidate to be an expert in every area, but to apply their expertise to make this role their own, actively learn on the job and deliver significant value from data.
By integrating data systems and building effective data models, this role will help us generate complete pictures of our environment, enabling positive experiences and strong decision making. This role will also help staff learn to engage with data and AI tools.
The main responsibilities of this role are:
1. Own the Microsoft Fabric based Data Platform, by actively identifying areas for improvement, shaping the roadmap, and delivering enhancements.
2. Design, develop and maintain data flows, models, reports and data tests, with a high standard of reliability, security and accuracy.
3. Create and run training sessions for staff to learn how to use data and AI, and provide mentoring or guidance for staff who want to self-serve.
4. Ensure the data platform complies with our data protection policies and privacy legislation, and support the Technology & Data team in handling GDPR requests, DPIAs and breach reporting.
5. Be an active member of our helpdesk by effectively and compassionately responding to data queries, requests and tickets.
6. Maintain useful and accurate documentation and data definitions to ensure the long term maintainability of the data platform.
7. Any other tasks as reasonably requested by Head of Technology & Data.
About You
We’re looking for someone who can work with people to understand what they need and then work with data to make that happen.
The successful candidate will have:
-
Data skills in one or more of architecture, engineering, visualisation, modelling or reporting.
-
Experience creating well designed and effective semantic models and measures (preferably in Power BI).
-
Experience working directly with end users to explore their needs, prioritise competing demands and manage stakeholders to align vision.
-
Experience using AI and LLMs to benefit Data Engineering workflows.
-
Knowledge in, or demonstrate ability to quickly learn, PySpark, SparkSQL, Delta tables, notebooks, pipelines and Git.
-
An ability to integrate data using REST or oData API endpoints.
-
An ability to implement data tests and monitoring processes that flag data quality issues before they impact users.
-
Agile project experience or management.
An ideal candidate would also have:
-
Experience with Dynamics 365, Business Central or Grant Management Systems.
-
Data architecture experience.
-
Advanced AI experience, such as creating tools that use LLM API endpoints or conducting ML analysis.
-
Experience creating and using CI/CD pipelines to enable automation, automatic testing and safe releases.
