Community Outreach Worker

Introduction

The Urban Partnership Group has partnered with Hammersmith and Fulham Arts Festival to launch an innovative climate action project.

The project will be focused on 6 new residents led “Eco Councils”. We expect most of the Eco Councils to be neighbourhood based, involving 6 – 12 active members and engaging many more local people. Activity budgets will be available.

With support, each Eco council will choose a topic to work on each year. They will be introduced to a range of potential topics through academic experts, but the choice will be theirs. They will then develop an action plan intended to involve local people to take action, which will make a difference on that topic in their local area.

Crucially, each Eco council will also work with an artist. That artist will have a budget to make work collaboratively with the eco council which helps make the topic accessible to local people. Part of the purpose of the project is to explore the ways in which that might most effectively happen. 

An annual exhibition will showcase the work of the councils and form the basis for a more strategic discussion between residents and local decision makers.

We are now looking for a skilled and committed community development worker to lead on setting up these neighbourhood eco councils and providing ongoing support to them across the lifetime of the project.

Reports to: CEO, Urban Partnership group. The postholder may also be asked to attend partnership management meetings.

Location: London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham (LBHF)

Hours 3 days a week

Length of contract: 3 years

Salary: £25,000

1. Job Purpose

• To engage and work collaboratively with individuals, families, community groups and local organisations to establish and support Eco Councils across the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham (LBHF).
• To support those Eco councils in developing action plans, collaborating with artists and engaging local people in practical campaigns to tackle a specific aspect of sustainability each year.
• To work with other staff members and other stakeholders to promote the project locally and to achieve strategic engagement with local decision makers.
• To work with the Eco councils to develop strategies for long term sustainability

The postholder will promote environmental awareness, inspire community participation in the green agenda, and support the development of sustainable initiatives that improve residents’ quality of life and enhance the local environment.

2. Key Responsibilities

•  With the support of senior staff in both organisations and with other community groups and stakeholders, engage with residents in 6 areas of the Borough to establish Eco councils.
• Work with each Eco council to develop a transparent and inclusive way of working including a communication strategy with local people and other community groups.
• Collaborate with the scientific experts to introduce a number of topics to each eco council and support them in selecting one.
• Collaborate with the artistic director to introduce artists to the Eco councils and facilitate discussions with artists to identify which artist each group will work with each year and agree the approach the artist will take.
• Support the Eco councils to develop an action plan in collaboration with their artist and then to implement it, ensuring that the plan is achievable and the outputs and outcomes measurable.
• Work with the project manager, Artistic Director and other colleagues and stakeholders to arrange and promote an annual exhibition.
• Work with the project manager, Artistic Director and others to develop and promote formal and informal training for eco councils as required.
• Ensure compliance with safeguarding, confidentiality, health and safety, and data protection policies and procedures.
• Participate in team meetings, training sessions, supervision and wider community development activities.
• Identify and monitor community needs, barriers to participation and emerging issues, reporting concerns to the relevant team leader as appropriate.
• Maintain accurate records of outreach activities, community engagement, referrals and outcomes.

3. Qualifications and Experience

Essential

• Previous experience in community outreach, community development, support work, social care or a related field
• Experience of working with diverse communities, including vulnerable individuals and families,
• Experience of organising community activities and engaging volunteers

Desirable

• Previous experience of managing volunteers
• Previous experience of supporting community led environmental projects

Skills and Competencies

• Excellent written and oral communication skills
• interpersonal skills and relationship building skills
• Ability to work independently, use initiative and contribute effectively as part of a team.
• Strong organisational, administrative and record-keeping skills.
• Cultural awareness and a commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion.

Desirable

• Knowledge of the green agenda, environmental priorities and sustainability initiatives within LBHF.

5. Other Requirements

• Willingness to work flexible hours, including occasional evenings and weekends, to meet community needs.
• Ability and willingness to travel within the borough as required.
• Satisfactory enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check, where applicable, and satisfactory references.
• Commitment to promoting environmental sustainability, community empowerment and inclusive participation
