About Coram

Coram is committed to improving the lives of the UK’s most vulnerable children and young people.

We support children and young people from birth to independence, creating a change that lasts a lifetime.

Coram is the UK’s oldest children’s charity founded by Thomas Coram in London helping vulnerable children and young people since 1739. Today, the Coram group helps more than one million children, young people, families and professionals every year by providing access to the skills and opportunities they need to thrive.

About Coram Potential Plus

Coram Potential Plus has been supporting children and young people with high learning potential, their families and the professionals who work with them for almost 60 years, initially as the National Association for Gifted Children. Our assessment service supports around 200 families each year, helping parents and schools develop a better understanding of individual children’s strengths and needs and how these can be supported educationally.

Coram Potential Plus is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people. Appointment is subject to appropriate safer recruitment checks.

Coram Potential Plus is looking for experienced education professionals to join our specialist assessment service for children and young people with high learning potential (HLP).

This role may particularly suit an experienced teacher, specialist teacher, SENCO or assessor who is looking to use their professional knowledge and assessment skills in a different and more flexible context.

About the role

Children with high learning potential have diverse learning profiles. Some demonstrate advanced abilities across many areas, while others have significant differences between areas of strength and relative need. Some have special educational needs or disabilities (SEND), and the interaction between high learning potential and additional needs can make a child’s profile particularly complex to understand.

Our Assessors work one-to-one with children and young people to help build a clearer picture of their individual learning profile. They use standardised assessments alongside observation, background information and evidence from families and educational settings, bringing this information together to produce a detailed report and practical recommendations for home and education.

The work requires more than administering tests. We are looking for people who are interested in how children think and learn, who notice patterns and discrepancies, and who can consider assessment findings in the context of the whole child. Just as importantly, our assessors need to be able to put children and families at ease and communicate complex information clearly and sensitively.

Who might this role suit?

You do not need to be an Educational Psychologist, and you do not need to come to us as an expert in high learning potential.

You will, however, need substantial professional experience of working with children and young people, strong analytical and communication skills, and the ability to exercise sound professional judgement and objectivity. You should be comfortable working independently while also engaging with supervision, quality assurance and feedback.

We would particularly welcome applications from people with experience in educational assessment or specialist teaching. Knowledge of high learning potential and dual and multiple exceptionality (twice-exceptionality) would be an advantage.

Previous experience of administering standardised educational or cognitive assessments would be particularly valuable. A relevant qualification in educational or psychometric testing and/or current registration with the BPS Register of Qualifications in Test Use (RQTU) is desirable.

Training and support

Successful applicants undertake a structured programme of training in our assessment approach and processes before being certified to undertake assessments independently. Ongoing professional support, quality assurance and opportunities to develop specialist knowledge are provided as part of the role.

Because this training represents a significant investment by the charity, we are looking for people who are interested in developing this as an ongoing part of their professional work. Once trained and certified, we ask Assessors to intend to remain active in the role for a minimum of two years.

Working arrangements

Assessors are engaged on a casual worker basis and are paid per assessment undertaken.

We are looking for people who would usually have capacity to undertake at least one assessment per week when required. Assessment volumes vary throughout the year, however, and we cannot guarantee a minimum number of assessments or regular weekly work.

Assessments may take place in person at Coram HQ, Bloomsbury, London/remotely, depending on the needs of the child and the requirements of the assessment.
