Job description

This role offers an opportunity to join our ground-breaking campaign and make a real and significant difference to the lives of hundreds of millions of animals a year.

Crustacean Compassion is a not-for-profit animal welfare organisation which campaigns for the humane treatment of decapod crustaceans such as lobsters, crabs, prawns, and langoustines, based on scientific evidence of their sentience.  Decapod crustaceans are not adequately covered under UK animal welfare legislation. This means that many shocking practices of slaughter, handling and storage which would be illegal in vertebrate animals, such as boiling alive, are permitted.

It is an exciting time to join Crustacean Compassion. This role offers an opportunity to join our ground-breaking campaign and make a real and significant difference to the lives of hundreds of millions of animals a year.  Our campaigning has led to a proposed amendment to add decapod crustaceans to the definition of animal in the new Animal Welfare (Sentience) Bill, currently progressing through Parliament. Despite our small size we are well-respected in NGO and political circles for our reasoned, determined, and creative approach. We have received significant public and political attention which has prompted widespread media coverage, and we are in regular engagement with relevant government departments. Most significantly, our work has resulted in the UK government commissioning an independent review of decapod sentience, in particular their ability to experience pain, and the associated risks to their welfare from their use in industry.

Current position

Working closely with the Campaign Manager, supporting delivery of the strategy and with our suite of animal welfare policies, you will help us produce campaigns and navigate legislative opportunities, provide advice, and represent the interests of decapod crustaceans across animal welfare legislation across the UK.

The role is suited to a person who understands animal welfare, the Blue Economy, and fishing issues; can lead supporter engagement; produce and respond to social media pieces driving engagement; create appealing and factual documents aiding lobbying information; and review internal information to collate reports for senior management.

 Purpose

Supporting the successful delivery of campaign strategies and organisational operations.
