The Head of Collections will be responsible for delivering the strategic and operational leadership of the Library, Archives and Museum Collections to deliver high quality services together with research resources to support the Society’s strategic objectives to pursue conservation, research, learning and outreach and dissemination of knowledge of the material past. The primary users of the Library and Archives are the Fellowship of the Society, and communicating effectively with the Fellowship is an important part of this role. 

The Society of Antiquaries is seeking an experienced and motivated heritage professional to lead our world-class Library, Archive and Museum collections. This is an exciting time to be joining the Society of Antiquaries. In the autumn of 2024, the Society purchased its premises at Burlington House on a long lease, after years of uncertainty and negotiation. Now, together with the four neighbouring learned Societies, we are joint landlords of both the buildings and the courtyard at Burlington House. 2025 sees the beginning of a major development project Past Matters: the Future at Burlington House and the role of our Collections will be at the heart of this. 

The Society welcomes hybrid and flexible working. For this full-time role, we ask that the post-holder usually works on site for three days per week, including Wednesdays. Daily core hours have a degree of flexibility, to be discussed with the General Secretary.

The Role

The Head of Operations role holder will lead the Facilities, Logistics and Welcome Desk teams in the effective delivery of the day-to-day operational functions. They will also be integral in developing and implementing building and facilities improvement strategies and lead on the SU's compliance measures, including Health and Safety and Governance. This position is essential for the SU in ensuring robust alignment with external legislation and requirements, and ensuring relevant business continuity and risk management across the organisation.

Reporting into the Directors of Social Enterprise and People, Equity and Organisational Development, the role holder will work closely with senior leadership colleagues, and also manage a number of direct reports from their areas. 

We are looking for someone with experience of managing, influencing and motivating different groups of staff, stakeholders and managers to deliver on operational and strategic plans within a complex organisation. Knowledge of managing and reporting on different and multiple legislative frameworks specifically around Health and Safety, Business Continuity and Major Incident planning is required for this role, as is understanding of managing capital projects through working with facilities teams and external contractors.

As Development Manager, you will be responsible for managing and supporting Nottingham Contemporary's ambitious development strategy to increase income, in collaboration with the Senior Development Manager who holds the overall responsibility for targets and strategy. Ensuring excellent stewardship of all supporters and a strong pipeline of donors and funders will be essential.

You will work with the Senior Development Manager to lead on and maximise income from trusts and foundations in particular, in support of Nottingham Contemporary’s core programme.

Main Accountabilities

• Hold oversight of the trust and foundation pipelines and work collaboratively with the Senior Development Manager, Director and programmers to develop and align cultivation strategies and asks
• Develop and implement cultivation and solicitation strategies for trusts and foundations
• Research and lead on writing compelling applications with strong cases for support to trusts and foundations to secure grants in support of the organisation’s goals
• Prepare timely project report templates and reports on the outcomes of donor and funder support
• Support the Senior Development Manager with ongoing prospect research
• Lead on the identification and cultivation of appropriate corporate sponsors, devising carefully tailored and convincing proposals to secure additional funding
• Support with the delivery of a creative programme of cultivation and stewardship events for donors, funders and prospects
• Represent Nottingham Contemporary at internal and external private views, previews, meetings and events

The Person

We're looking for someone who has excellent interpersonal skills, alongside the ability to write compelling cases for support. The ideal candidate will be innovative, pro-active and able to adapt easily as a creative problem-solver. A team player, you'll relish working collaboratively with colleagues to achieve shared goals.

You’ll have a track record in fundraising or relationship management in the not for profit, cultural or other relevant sectors, in particular with trusts and foundations. You’ll have the ability to manage a busy workload to meet agreed deadlines, and your excellent organisational and project management skills will come in handy when organising a range of cultivation and stewardship events for donors, funders and prospects.

Role description

As our philanthropy coordinator, you will play a key role in building new partnerships with philanthropists and high-net-worth individuals, with an immediate focus on the UK, US, and Europe. Your primary responsibilities will include: 

• Designing and executing our philanthropy fundraising strategy. Lead a strategy to identify, cultivate, and solicit high-net-worth individuals (HNWI) —including through Donor Advised Funds, Family Offices, Family Foundations, and other giving vehicles—with an immediate focus on the US, UK and Europe.

The role:

Reporting directly to the COO, the Financial Controller will ensure the provision of consistent, robust financial advice to the Charity as a whole.  This person will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of finance and financial operations, ensuring these are compliant with statutory requirements and appropriate and effective financial controls are in place. They will also maintain a financial planning framework that will facilitate the delivery of the Charity’s financial strategy. This will involve managing one direct report, overseeing all financial reporting and tax compliance, preparing the Charity’s management accounts and the end of year accounts for approval and sign off by the Trustees. In addition, the role will be responsible for managing an annual financial audit process preparing the annual budgets in advance for SLT sign off and providing sound financial advice across all of these areas.

This person will also manage all external relationships with banks, financial institutions, property Investors and auditors wherever Finance is the main issue being dealt with. This person will also oversee all Grants related financial transactions in close collaboration with the Grants department.

The person:

The successful candidate will be a qualified accountant and will be able to provide excellent financial management and reporting for the Charity. They will be confident working with different internal stakeholders and external professional advisors and will be capable of considering their different requirements and priorities in a knowledgeable way. This person will have excellent attention to detail and will be highly organised and a strong communicator across a wide range of audiences. Educated to Degree level or the equivalent (ACCA, CIMA, ACA or CIPFA), this person will have excellent interpersonal skills, strong written and verbal communication and will be up to date on all MS Office packages and financial software including SAGE being essential.

Candidates with prior experience of working with endowed Trusts, Foundations or Charities or who have worked in Charities that have income derived from a permanent endowment (either partially or totally), will be of particular interest, so please draw attention to this when applying.

This person will have demonstrated substantial financial management experience at a senior level in the Charity or Not-for-Profit sectors, with extensive knowledge of UK Charity Accounting Standards (SORP, Charity Commission compliance and VAT). Also experienced in strategic financial planning, preparing complex financial statements, budgeting and cashflow forecasting, and have good knowledge of financial planning in a Funder or Grant-Maker setting. Main Responsibilities:

As Specialist Administrative Support to the Board of Trustees, you will play a vital role in supporting the Board when the central governance team is unavailable or not engaged. Your responsibilities will include coordinating board meetings, preparing and circulating agendas and papers, taking minutes, and maintaining accurate records. You will act as a key liaison between the Board and senior leadership, ensuring timely communication, follow-up on actions, and compliance with governance standards. The role also involves drafting documents, supporting policy reviews, managing regulatory submissions, and providing general administrative support to ensure the Board operates efficiently and effectively.

We are recruiting for an experienced Area Manager to oversee 12 dedicated shop teams in Greater London and South East England.
