Community Advice Works is an established community charity based in New Cross in South
East London. As the only charity in the London Borough of Lewisham offering a general
drop-in advice service, we are a critical source of support to vulnerable residents. We have
built a strong reputation within the Borough for providing high quality, independent, person-
centred welfare and housing advice. The organisation employs several part-time staff and
has a team of volunteers. In addition to providing advice we currently deliver a domestic
violence project at Guys and St Thomas’ Hospital.
Like many charities in the advice sector, CAW is going through a process of change. We are
looking for an experienced and community-driven individual with a strong set of managerial
and interpersonal skills, preferably with a background in advice work, to maintain the strong
structures and reputation for excellence that we have developed.
As service manager, you will work with our friendly staff and trustee team to deliver our vital

Key duties
- Staff and volunteer management
- Line manage staff by providing support and supervision as needed, conducting regular performance reviews, and identifying staff training needs
- Oversee recruitment, training, and management of volunteers to ensure they are properly supported and equipped to help meet CAW’s service goals
Service delivery
- Ensure high quality and timely service delivery in line with the Service Level Agreements with our various service partners
- Identify any issues with service delivery and help develop cost-effective solutions to them as appropriate
- Compile and maintain accurate statistics on service performance to share with funders and CAW trustees
- Develop and maintain positive relationships with our key service partners through regular engagement, including attendance at regular service partnership meetings
- Engage regularly with our funders and other key stakeholders to build and maintain positive working relationships, and provide them with timely reporting on our service performance as needed
- Update service level agreements with existing funders, and draft new agreements as needed

Administration and Finance
- Ensure day-to-day administrative processes are functioning smoothly, and that necessary policies and procedures are up to date

Fundraising and Marketing
- Help identify new funding and other revenue-raising opportunities
- Support the work of the fundraising sub-committee in preparing funding applications
- Work with trustees and external vendors to ensure CAW website is kept up-to-date
- Work with trustees and external vendors (as appropriate) to develop a social media presence for CAW
- Identifying and supporting efforts to increase CAW’s profile in the local community and to build relationships with key local stakeholders as appropriate Governance
- Prepare monthly reports for the trustees on service performance

Person specification
Essential criteria
- Minimum of 3 years’ experience in a managerial role
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Strong teamwork and interpersonal skills, including ability to manage a diverse range of working relationships in an effective, empathetic but professional manner
- Experience of working in a busy environment, managing competing work pressures and prioritising tasks appropriately to ensure key deadlines are met

To maintain good practice standards, provide timely information and advice to local churches, and operate a robust casework service. To sustain and further develop a comprehensive safeguarding training programme that delivers nationally approved training effectively and with impact.
We are seeking to appoint two experienced Safeguarding Officers on a permanent contract; altogether 1.3 full-time equivalent between the two posts, with hours being negotiable with successful candidates.The post holders will have a relevant professional qualification and be able to demonstrate a proven track record of direct safeguarding practice with vulnerable adults or children or both. The role
The role is a 12 month fixed term contract and sits in our people team, supporting the charity by providing a professional, comprehensive and proactive recruitment service. To work closely with the HR advisors, the HR coordinator and as necessary, the HR and organisational development manager, to support recruitment and selection-based projects.
As the first point of contact for all recruitment related queries from recruiting managers and candidates, you’ll be responsible for uploading vacancies and supporting information onto our online advertising platforms and manage recruitment activity as a key user of our recruitment applicant tracking system (ATS). About the role
£18,975 for 22 hours, FTE salary is £31,051
In this varied and rewarding role you will develop and coordinate our team of volunteers and Sessional Workers (zero hours youth workers). You will be instrumental in defining our volunteer strategy moving forward and identify other participation opportunities such as work experience placements, university placements, internships and apprenticeships.
You will also help develop internal engagement activities and participate in external awareness raising and fundraising activities, to support both volunteering and fundraising.
This role is for 22 hours per week, which will ideally be worked over 4 days. There is the option of hybrid working. This new role will lead on Platform’s People and Process functions as we progress through the next stage of our exciting restructure process.
We are a flat-structured organisation that makes decisions collectively. We are currently developing and designing a new organisational structure based on sociocracy where staff are supported to work more collectively and strategically across our seven programs.
The focus of this role will be on transforming and strengthening our HR systems and processes to centre compassion, care and liberation. As well as delivering the day-to-day HR functions within our small organisation, this role will lead on the long-term design and implementation of a People Strategy and a Learning and Development Strategy, supporting our staff to develop their own roles while growing as a team within our new structure. Key priorities for this work will be:

This role will sit within our new ‘Resourcing Circle’ - working with the Finance and Fundraising staff and liaising with our Board of Trustees.
We are looking for someone passionate about radical HR practices, who is excited to help us develop a structure that empowers and adequately resources our team to deliver their work.
Details:
Hours: 4 days: 32 hours per week based on a 40 hour week, flexible hours possible.
Contract: Permanent, subject to 6 months probation.
Salary: Baseline salary as of March 2024 is £42,248 pro rata (£33,791 at 4 days a week) and is subject to Platform’s Socially Just Waging System.
Location: Oxford House, Derbyshire Street, London, E2 6HG, but remote working is possible. Most Platform staff are supported to work from home most of the time, but all permanent members of staff are expected to attend in-person monthly meetings, and other in-person meetings when required.

Duties and responsibilities:
People work

Working within the Resourcing circle to manage all aspects of our People work

Leading the development of a People Strategy, Wellbeing Strategy and Learning and Development Strategy

Managing recruitment, selection and contracting

Managing all employee on and off boarding procedures ensuring the company meets its statutory obligations and delivers an effective probationary process

In collaboration with line managers, developing and managing performance appraisals, probationary reviews and annual reviews

Providing necessary HR administration and remaining up to date on employment legislation (training provided) ensuring that any changes are communicated in a clear and timely manner

Developing and managing our organisational policies and procedures in line with Platform’s values

Support the Fundraising and Finance Manager in a collaborative review and redesign process of our Socially Just Waging System

Leading a collaborative review of our line management process and overseeing its implementation

Coordinating the anti-oppression working group, and bottom-lining the development, delivery and monitoring of the anti-oppression strategy

Provide general operational coordination to the staff team on a day to day basis.

Manage the office, ensuring everyone has the supplies and equipment they need, the post is well managed, and the office is well organised and safe

Board of Directors

Prepare reports for the board meetings and subgroup meetings, providing advice and recommendations where necessary.

Attend board meetings and subgroup meetings (involves a few hours of work in the evening, outside normal working hours, which you’ll be able to claim back).

Pro-actively participate in sociocratic, consensus decision making in our team meetings, contributing to the general strategic development of Platform.

About the role
Reporting to the CEO and managing a talented team of 2 HR Business Partners and 1 HR & Recruitment Administrator you will:
- Develop and implement HR strategies, processes and services aligned with our overall strategy and vision
- Develop Staff Wellbeing strategy and oversee the Staff Wellbeing Action Group
- Lead the HR function and team and be a pro-active member of the Senior Management Team
- Ensure high quality delivery of HR responsibilities including policies and processes, HRIS, resourcing, reward, employee services, management development, employee relations and learning
- Be the appointed competent person to advise on Health & Safety across the organisation, this includes ongoing monitoring via KPI’s and internal audits and leading the Health & Safety committee meetings

- Previous experience across most HR disciplines such as recruitment and retention, wellbeing, learning and development, and HR administration as well as navigating complex HR issues
