Job Purpose

This provides the platform for the continued investment in the legacy programme ensuring a strong pipeline is developed to support the research ambitions of the Charity.

The Legacy Casework officer is responsible for working on the case load of open legacy cases, taking responsibility for pecuniary, residuary legacies, and contentious cases, with the support of the Legacy Casework Manager (LCM).

The role requires experience and understanding of legacy administration, including knowledge of the legislation and precedents, ability to guide lay executors, review estate accounts, answer audit queries related to casework, and support the LCM to ensure the charity receives its entitlement, as per the Charity Commissions regulations.

It is also the responsibility of the Legacy Casework officer to ensure that the Legacy Admin CRM, First Class, is accurately representative of each case and all cases are in line with data protection principles.

Main duties and responsibilities of the role:

Legacy administration

· Manage legacy cases assigned by LCM from notification to receipt.

· Record new legacy cases and all appropriate information, including income, using databases, setting up regular reviews in line with the Charity’s policy until the completion of the administration.

· Send correspondence to the solicitors, executors and next of kin including all relevant information, with support of LCM where necessary.

· Ensuring the charity receives its full entitlement, satisfying legal requirements by requesting copies of all relevant documentation, as outlined by the LCM.

· Assisting with the end of the Charity’s financial year auditing and accruals process, by attending and supporting LCM in audit meetings, as and when required.

· Reporting on notifications, highlighting any trends in notifications and/or gifts to LCM and Head of Legacy and In-Memory Giving.

· Advising, and supporting the LCM, in development of legacy casework processes and policies.

· Sign receipts for legacies as a delegated officer of ARUK.

Team support

· Inputting into annual planning and development of legacy and in memory marketing plans.

· Being actively involved in cross-functional activities as required, including matrix working.

 

What we are looking for:

· Experience of using First Class

· Qualified or working towards Certificate in Charity Legacy Administration/ Equivalent probate legal background

· Ability to manage multiple caseloads and remain calm under pressure.

· Excellent communication skills (written and oral)

· Excellent attention to detail, with the ability to analyse data to spot trends

· Delivers a high level of service to stakeholders, both internal and external

· Able to work as part of a team and autonomously when required

Ways of working: As part of our Agile ways of working you will be required to work approximately 2 days a week from the office, which is subject to the requirements of the role and the business needs. Flexibility on where you work can be split between working from home and our office.

Finance Manager Job Description

Brent Mencap has been passionate about a healthier and fairer Brent since 1979. We’ve developed and run successful housing, employment, health, advice, wellbeing and self-advocacy services. During austerity and Covid we diversified, successfully taking on NHS work with people with long-term health conditions. We provide social prescribing support and health and wellbeing coaching to patients for Brent GPs. In 2024-25 we helped over 18000 people. We’re a leading partner on the Brent Health Educators Programme.

Our income has substantially  increased from £382k in 19/20 to £1.71 million in 23-24. We’ve had to adapt quickly, developing and retaining a much larger staff group, using our data better and improving our marketing.

Brent Mencap offers fantastic free creative and wellbeing activities for people with a learning disability, autism and long-term health conditions. These have flourished since Covid. People love yoga, poetry, singing, gardening, Breathe and Move, self-advocacy, campaigning, awareness raising, CREATE art activities for young people, external trips and parties. Small grants, donations and our reserves fund this while we get longer term funding. Our self-advocates want us to focus on paid employment, youth services and making Brent Council use accessible information properly.

Our current finance manager has been pivotal to Brent Mencap’s recent growth, adapting to paying more people, dealing with complicated invoices, making sure we get paid promptly, being as diligent about a project budget worth 5k as our overall budget and supportive with staff  wage queries. While there is lots of data input, reconciling, processing purchase orders, the role involves real involvement in project development, monitoring with other managers and face-to-face involvement with users and staff. It’s never boring and definitely not for the faint hearted!!

As Finance Manager for Brent Mencap, you will have a key leadership position. You will be responsible for the strategic and operational oversight of our finances, ensuring compliance with all statutory requirements while ensuring our services are sustainable through sound financial planning. You will work closely with the Executive Director and Trustee Board to provide accurate insights and projections that support long-term growth and resilience.

You will play a pivotal role in reviewing and maintaining our robust finance and administrative system and procedures, managing risks and ensuring our charity finances can support delivery of our mission. Pensions

SARC operates a company pension scheme. SARC will contribute 4% towards the scheme. Staff are encouraged, but not required, to make a contribution to the scheme which they can do up to the HMRC limit of contributions.

Annual Leave

The annual leave entitlement with pay for full time staff is twenty-five days in each year rising annually to a maximum of thirty days.

The Centre is closed on Bank Holidays and during the period between Christmas and New Year paid time-off is granted.

Thanks to funding received from Building Communities Trust Invest Local Programme, The Coalfields Regeneration Trust are currently looking for a dynamic person to support community action within the community of Cefn Golau. This role will require you to support the delivery of projects and programmes of work identified in the Cefn Golau Driving Change Plan working with the Building Communities Trust Invest Local Officer, Cefn Golau Together, residents, volunteers, groups, stakeholders and partners. The role will be to manage and develop a community venue with the aim of sustaining community activities and services beyond the Invest Local funding. You will also work with partner organisations to address any gaps in provision identified with the local community.
