About MediCinema

Our key strategic objective is to reach and impact more patients with our programmes by building more cinemas and our communications will be targeted as such towards the health sector.  This runs alongside informing and engaging current and new supporters, corporate partners and families by telling them about the impact we make.  We are currently going through a website redesign with the new site to be launched in the next month.

MediCinema is a growing national registered UK charity that improves the wellbeing and enriches the quality of life of NHS patients and their families through the power of the shared cinema experience and the magic of film. We achieve this by building and running specially equipped cinemas inside hospitals, screening the latest films for free for patients of all ages. Our services help patients and their families by reducing feelings of isolation, anxiety and stress, improving emotional, mental and physical health and increasing patient resilience.

Our purpose-built cinemas are designed to accommodate patients in hospital beds and wheelchairs, on drips or with monitors.  Patients are looked after by trained volunteers who accompany them from the wards to the cinemas, and by two nurses who are present at each screening.   We have strong support from the film and cinema industry who provide their films for free and engage in fundraising activities for MediCinema.   Through our long-standing partnership with Disney, we also devise and provide activities on the wards along with special screenings.

Our cinema-based programmes make a real impact during challenging times, shown by our regular feedback surveys from attendees.  94% of those asked tell us it helps to reduce feelings of isolation, 93% tell us it helps reduce anxiety and stress, and 56% reported that going to the MediCinema helped to reduce their pain.

We’ve had more than 300,000 people through our doors since MediCinema was founded in 1999 at St Thomas’s Hospital and have six MediCinemas across the country. A new site is due to open in 2024 at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital.
