Job title: Service Manager - Night Shelters

About you

As the Service Manager for our night shelter service, you’ll be at the heart of Glass Door’s mission, delivering the largest network of night shelters in the UK.  This pivotal role offers you the chance to make a real difference by managing a dedicated team across multiple sites, ensuring high-quality, consistent service that supports our guests to build a route out of homelessness.  We’re looking for a dynamic, proactive leader with a passion for problem-solving and a compassionate service delivery.

What you will do as part of our team

The Service Manager is responsible for the following:

Service delivery 

· Lead all aspects of the planning, preparation, and delivery of the night shelter service. 

· Oversee the day-to-day operations of the service, directly engaging with staff and guests to ensure high-quality service delivery. 

· Ensure operational policies are consistently followed, providing guests with a reliable and uniform service experience. 

· Manage the rota across three night shelters to maintain adequate staffing at all times. 

· Manage a fleet of three vehicles used for the night shelters, ensuring their availability and maintenance. 

· Ensure all staff are fully aware of service provisions, requirements, and expectations. 

· Lead the continuous improvement of the shelter service to better meet guest needs. 

· Ensure due diligence is performed, and that reporting and records are accurately maintained. 

· Collaborate with the Head of Operations & Service Development to keep expenditures and income within agreed budget limits. 

· Liaise with casework colleagues to ensure seamless collaboration between night shelter and casework staff. 

· Ensure the night shelters are aligned with other statutory and charity services to best meet the needs of our guests. 

· Conduct and maintain annual general and fire risk assessments for each shelter venue; actively maintain the service-level risk register and contribute to organisational risk register. 

· Promptly raise concerns and safeguarding issues in accordance with relevant policies and procedures.

· Ensure policies and procedures are up-to-date with annual reviews, and provide staff with training and guidance on compliance and best practices. 

Management 

· Manage and supervise a seasonal staff team of approximately 40 individuals. 

· Oversee the full employee lifecycle management, including: recruitment, onboarding, training and performance management. 

· Lead the recruitment and training of seasonal shelter staff. 

· Provide high-quality support and line management to night shelter staff, delivering clear guidance, support, and effective leadership. 

· Ensure excellent performance management, support, and supervision of Night Shelter Managers and staff, including monitoring annual leave and addressing performance issues in line with Glass Door’s policies. 

· Empower seasonal managers to deliver high-quality, safe support and effective guest management in accordance with Glass Door policies and procedures. 

· Regularly monitor the quality of support and service by conducting site visits to the night shelters. 

· Organise and deliver a comprehensive training programme for shelter staff. 

· Facilitate regular supervision and team meetings to promote effective teamwork and communication. 

· Ensure the In-form system is utilised efficiently by shelter staff, with timely updates to reports, and prompt, accurate record-keeping. 

· Provide timely support, advice, and guidance to staff as needed. 

Service Development and Planning  

· Play a lead role in the annual planning of the night shelter service and contribute to the annual services business plan. 

· Drive the achievement of organisational targets and objectives as outlined in Glass Door’s business plan. 

Additional  

· Cultivate positive relationships with guests, staff, professionals, partners, suppliers, and the local community. 

· Provide up to date, shelter specific information as appropriate, for cross organisation usage

· To undertake any other duties that can be reasonably required to meet the operational needs of Glass Door.

Person Specification 

Essential: 

· Proven experience working with and understanding the needs of people experiencing homelessness or similar disadvantaged groups. 

· Experience in leading a service and managing frontline teams.

· Understanding and appreciation of trauma-informed care. 

· Valid driving license for manual transmission with the willingness to drive the Glass Door vehicles. 

· Ability to work independently, with strong decision-making skills and initiative. 

· Highly organised with excellent time-management abilities. 

· Exceptional communication skills, adaptable to various styles and approaches. 

· Strong IT proficiency, including advanced Microsoft Office skills. 

· Willingness to work occasional evenings and weekends, with the flexibility to cover shifts in emergencies. Time off in lieu provided. 

· Proactive approach in resolving challenging situations and achieving desired outcomes. 

· Empathetic and professional in handling challenging circumstances.

The Upper Room (TUR) works with a wide range of financially and socially disadvantaged groups including homeless people, people with long-term mental health conditions, asylum-seekers, refugees and ex-offenders – helping them to improve their lives and become productive members of society. Central to our offering is our UR4Meals service, providing free, home-cooked food to people who cannot afford to provide for themselves. We are also very proud of our UR4Driving programme, which supports people recently out of prison with free driving lessons in exchange for community volunteering. Gaining a driving licence greatly enhances their future employability prospects and helps break the cycle of re-offending. The role

Registered Care Manager

The build for this brand-new extra care scheme Harbour Place in Workington is well underway and we are now recruiting for a Registered Manager. You will work with internal and external stakeholders to ensure the new services is mobilised successfully.

We are seeking an Overnight/Weeked Project Worker to join our team. In this crucial role, you will ensure our main site is a safe and welcoming environment and provide support to residents during evenings and weekends.

Your responsibilities will include overseeing the smooth operation of our services, collaborating with team members to ensure residents' wellbeing, and managing evening volunteers. Crisis is the national charity for people experiencing homelessness. In 2024 we embarked on our new 10-year strategy for ending homelessness. We know it is not inevitable. We know together we can end it. 

It is an exciting and important time to be joining us at Crisis. We work with thousands of people across England, Scotland, and Wales so they can leave homelessness behind for good. We have recently adapted the way our services work to maximise our impact in ending homelessness. We have increased our capacity to work with people one to one and strengthened our ability to support those people facing the most barriers to preventing or ending their homelessness. 

Location: Crisis Skylight Birmingham, 303 Rhubarb Building, 25 Heath Mill Lane, Digbeth, B9 4AE.

You will be able to work from home one day per week in line with Crisis’ Hybrid Working Policy. You will be expected to travel around Birmingham and wider West Midlands on a regular basis to meet with partners and stakeholders. National travel i.e., to London Head Office or other Skylights will take place on average once every six weeks.

Crisis Skylight Birmingham has been established in the city since 2010, delivering trauma informed services to our ,clients all underpinned by our commitment to Psychologically Informed Environments and supported by Clinical Psychologists.

We are a dynamic, innovative, and values-led organisation, with the opportunity and flexibility to develop our services to meet the needs of the people we work with. We have just begun to embark on an ambitious, new 10-year strategy, which will see our services evolve to become hubs, delivering best in class services alongside partners, increasing our influence to see systemic change to end homelessness for the people and places we work.  

The Director of Crisis Skylight Birmingham will be responsible for leading and developing strategic partnerships across Birmingham and the West Midlands region. This is an exciting opportunity to develop and lead the service into our new 10-year strategy, influencing key local and national political, community and business leaders, partners, and providers to drive forward our strategic priorities all with the aim of ending homelessness. You will play a key role as a decision marker on the Client Services Senior Leadership Team, along with your counterparts from across the different regions of the UK.

About you 

We are looking for an experienced, innovative, compassionate, bold, collaborative senior leader from the homelessness, health, safeguarding or associated sectors. You will have experience of building relationships with senior leaders to develop strategic partnerships with the aim of achieving strategic objectives including but not exclusively, in areas of change management, strategic development of services,.& leading collaborative partnerships that directly contribute to achieving performance targets  You will have the motivation, commitment, and vision, able to influence a range of audiences and able to articulate a compelling case for change to key decision makers across the West Midlands .  You will be a leader in your field, with experience of operational delivery, ensuring high quality and safe services to vulnerable adults, with the ability to provide clear leadership to your team.

Operations

On-site at Glass Door Night shelter venues in the boroughs of Kensington & Chelsea, Hammersmith and Fulham or Wandsworth

20 October 2024 to late April 2025 

Shifts from 6:45pm or 9:45pm to 7.15am (plus additional time if allocated driver). Hours and days of work will vary according to the needs of the service.

We are looking to recruit exceptional individuals with an open, collaborative style and a practical, can-do approach to provide a vital nightly service for our guests as Overnight Project Workers.

While experience of working within the homelessness sector or with similarly vulnerable people would be desirable, an understanding of the needs of people experiencing homelessness and working in a compassionate and flexible manner is more important and essential.

Flexibility is required, as you will be working a shift rota that will include weekends and public holidays. Due to the vulnerable group you will be working with, you will be asked to undergo an enhanced DBS check as part of our safeguarding measures prior to appointment.

Please note:

Some of our Overnight Project Workers are required to have a driving licence and be able to drive a manual vehicle.

However, this post also is still suitable for those that want a non-driving role.

On each shift, one of the two Overnight Project Workers will be an allocated driver and is expected to drive the van back to its local base in Fulham or Wandsworth, depending on the shelter circuit. The allocated driver for the shift will receive an additional hour of pay for this task.

What you will do as part of our team

The Overnight Project Worker is responsible for the following:

Job spec

• Maintaining a friendly, supportive environment and cultivating positive relationships with guests, colleagues, and volunteers.
• Following best practice procedures for the security and safety of the guests and volunteers.
• Diffusing difficult or dangerous situations and summon assistance when necessary. Training will be provided. Writing regular shift reports using the In-Form client relationship platform.
• Carrying out regular checks around the shelter, checking conditions of all areas.
• Ensuring that the van is loaded correctly with shelter provisions and that no Glass Door belongings are left on site.
• Adhering to Glass Door’s operational and health & safety policies in all aspects of your work. Maintaining clear lines of communication with your colleagues including the Night Shelter Manager, Caseworkers, and the Operations Manager.
• Ensuring cleaning protocols are followed and implemented.
• Undertaking any other duties to aid the good running of the project, as required by the Shelter Manager or Operations Manager.
• Accurately reporting observations, interactions, concerns and actions with guests to their caseworker using written reports.
• Setting up and help serve a simple breakfast for guests in the morning
• Ensuring all guests are woken from 6am onwards and leave the building by 7am
• Flexibility is required, as you will be working a shift rota that includes weekends and public holidays.

On occasions you will also be expected to attend training, team meetings and other activities as required. The allocated driver is expected to drive the van back to its allocated base at the end of the shift to which an additional hour of pay applies for this task.

• The day-to-day operation and management of nights shelters in West and Southwest London. Maintaining a friendly, supportive environment and cultivating positive relationships with guests, colleagues and volunteers.
• Welcoming and inducting new guests into the shelter by explaining the shelter policies.
• Supporting volunteer teams at each venue to ensure the smooth running of the project and developing good communication with the Volunteer Co-ordinators.
• Diffusing difficult or dangerous situations and summon assistance when necessary. Training will be provided.
• Ensuring cleaning protocols are implemented by all staff, guests and volunteers.
• Maintaining guest attendance records and shift reports on our iPad-based In-From client relationship platform.
• Following best practice procedures for the security and safety of the guests and volunteers.
• Monitoring guest welfare throughout the shift and responding to any situations or emergencies that arise. Adhering to Glass Door’s operational and health & safety policies in all aspects of your work.
• Maintaining clear lines of communication with your colleagues including Overnight Project Workers, Caseworkers and Operations Manager.
• Conducting a nightly briefing for volunteers and staff before the shelter opens to guests.
• Undertaking any other duties to aid the good running of the project, as required by the Operations Manager. Attending regular meetings with caseworkers to share any relevant information including guest welfare, interactions and other important information.
• Attending 1 to 1 sessions with the Operations Manager on a fortnightly basis.
• Attending the monthly winter services meetings held on Wednesday afternoons
• Accurately reporting observations, interactions, concerns and actions with guests to their caseworker using written reports.
• Ensuring the shelter van is kept well organised and stocks are well maintained.
• Supporting casework team with practical tasks related to guests’ day-to-day activities as requested.
