Job description

The Active Wellbeing Society (TAWS) is a community benefit society and cooperative working to develop healthy, happy communities living active and connected lives.

Our vision is for a society where people have the autonomy, capacity, resources and skills to become the architects of their own destiny; where our individual wellbeing is recognised as being bound up in our collective responsibility to and dependency on each other; and where all of us feel empowered as agents of social change to make a difference – whether at an individual level or more widely.

By working collaboratively with communities we aim to bring about sustainable change on an social, environmental and economic level; to do the social knitting required to create stronger and more resilient communities and to support communities to identify, mitigate and remove the barriers that prevent them from living active and connected lives.

You will be responsible for accelerating and influencing the development of low traffic neighbourhoods. You will work closely with communities, interest groups and policy makers referring to best practice. You will plan and deliver a programme of activity within the community that forwards the case and demonstrates the impact of low car neighbourhoods upon wellbeing. You will be passionate about this topic, the city of Birmingham and focused on making a positive change. You will already be an active member of the community with the drive to make a safer and greener place to live for all of us. You must reach out to local communities in areas of low car ownership and high air pollution levels to understand issues at ground level. You will also support communities to develop compelling local visions for low traffic neighbourhoods and help mobilise grassroots action.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • The low traffic neighbourhood worker will work with local people and organisations to develop and promote a low traffic vision for our city.
  • Help design coherent delivery plans at street level and make positive steps towards reducing traffic in the long term.
  • Speak at public events, where necessary, about the need to cut traffic and pollution across Birmingham.
  • Work with communities and system leaders using positive disruption to gain support for and to implement low traffic neighbourhoods.
  • Set up and host public meetings in priority communities including Lozells, Kings Heath and Moseley.
  • You will be passionate about this topic and will easily build relationships in the community.
  • Actively bring people together to create solutions and connect people for a bigger purpose.
  • Understand and use asset-based community development approaches to community development.
  • Work with communities to understand priorities and co-design initiatives relating to low traffic neighbourhood outcomes. This should also include working ‘with’ not ‘doing to’ communities and community organisations.
  • Ensure plans and approach are linked to and influencing system change through system leadership at community level.
  • Demonstrate innovation, leadership and delivery in this field of work.
  • Work in partnership and collaboration with wider stakeholders, community group/organisations and activists.
  • Project manage contracts including making recommendations where necessary.
  • Act to encourage, develop and shape a community who actively support low traffic neighbourhoods.
  • Write campaign content that is accessible and meaningful for local communities.
  • Any other duties as reasonably required in line with your role.

Essential Requirements:

  • Strong personal connection to Birmingham.
  • Proven experience of being active in your community on social and/or environmental issues.
  • Strong people skills and experience of working with volunteers, colleagues and project partners.
  • Good standard of written and spoken communication skills.
  • Ability to take initiative and work independently, as well as part of a team.
  • Excellent organisational and time management skills.
  • Adaptability across your day job, bags of enthusiasm and a keen appetite for learning.
