Senior Manager - Legal and Compliance 

Location: Remote with occasional pre-arranged travel to Downton, Salisbury, SP5 3RB and other UK locations as required

Hours: Full time, 35 hours per week

About the Role

We're looking for a confident, pragmatic and solutions-focused Governance, Compliance & Data Protection Manager to join our Risk & Compliance Team at Help for Heroes.

This is a unique opportunity to combine legal advisory, governance, compliance, data protection and leadership responsibilities within a purpose-driven organisation that makes a real difference to the Armed Forces community. You'll act as our named Data Protection Officer, provide practical legal advice across a broad range of commercial and operational matters, and help shape the governance and compliance framework that enables the charity to operate safely, ethically and effectively.

No two days will be the same. One day you might be advising on a commercial partnership or reviewing contracts; the next you could be supporting a significant data protection matter, developing governance processes, overseeing fraud prevention activities, or helping senior leaders navigate complex compliance challenges.

This is a role for someone who enjoys working across the organisation, building strong relationships and finding practical ways to manage risk while supporting innovation and delivery.

About You

You'll be an experienced governance, legal, compliance or data protection professional who can balance regulatory requirements with operational realities.

You'll be comfortable working with stakeholders at all levels, confident providing advice, and able to simplify complex legal and compliance issues into practical guidance that people can act upon.

We're looking for someone with:

• Strong knowledge of UK GDPR, the Data Protection Act and related legislation.
• A recognised data protection qualification such as CIPP/E, BCS Data Protection Certificate, Practitioner Certificate in Data Protection, or equivalent.
• Significant experience reviewing, drafting and supporting the negotiation of commercial contracts.
• Experience providing legal or compliance advice on contractual, commercial and operational matters.
• Strong stakeholder management and influencing skills.
• Experience managing or supervising staff.
• Excellent judgement, attention to detail and integrity.
• The ability to remain calm under pressure and manage competing priorities.
• A pragmatic, commercially aware and solutions-focused approach.
• Experience of working within a charity or regulated environment would be an advantage.

About the Team

You'll report directly to the Head of Finance and play a key leadership role within our Risk & Compliance Team.

The team works across every area of the charity, helping colleagues manage risk, meet their regulatory obligations and make informed decisions that protect our people, supporters, beneficiaries and reputation.

You'll lead a small team and collaborate closely with colleagues across all areas of the charity from service delivery to fundraising. Together, we provide trusted advice, practical support and assurance that enables the charity to achieve its mission while maintaining the highest standards of compliance and integrity.
