Job description

Rays of Sunshine Children’s Charity brightens the lives of seriously ill young people and their families by granting wishes and providing ongoing support in hospital and within the community. Every day of the year the charity gives brave and deserving children across the UK the chance to put their illness on hold and do something they have previously only dreamed of. Our work creates a positive distraction, reduces isolation, improves self-esteem and creates precious memories and smiles.

Reports to the CEO, the role is based in the charity’s office in Finchley

Person Specification

  • Must have a strong financial background with the ability to effectively manage budgets

  • Must have strong leadership skills with the drive to inspire others

  • A proven track record in team leadership including recruitment and employee development

  • The ability to deliver business targets, with a focus on the growth and development of services

  • Sound financial understanding and experience of budget management

  • A thorough knowledge of best practise related to the application of Health & Safety legislation and to the principles of Safeguarding

  • The ability to use own initiative and be a good problem solver

  • Must be caring and empathetic and above all be a good ambassador for the Charity

  • Must be organised, strategic and have excellent time management skills with the ability to prioritise the workload, work to tight deadlines and work calmly under pressure

  • Must have strong oral and written communication skills; in order to develop effective working relationships with Trustees, Volunteers, Children, Parents, Professional Advisors and Corporate Supporters

  • Must have a good telephone manner, be diplomatic, patient and have an understanding of confidentiality and Data Protection requirements

  • Must be able to work unsociable hours on occasions such as evening meetings/functions

    Overall responsibilities

  • Contributing to Rays of Sunshine’s strategic planning process.

  • Developing and delivering innovative and engaging activities and plans.

  • Ensuring the safety, quality, compliance and financial viability of Rays of Sunshine’s services.

  • Leading and motivating your team to ensure a passionate and positive culture

  • Acting as an expert ‘trouble-shooter’, providing expert guidance and leadership to service team

    Management Responsibilities

  • Overall responsibility for managing the service delivery team: wish team, hospital liaison team, engagement team and wish volunteers

  • Responsible for the operations of Rays of Sunshine’s service

  • Responsible for all service budgets

  • Recruitment, training and support for all staff across the service delivery team including monitoring the team’s workload

  • Ensure awareness of the charity across all key referring hospitals nationwide.

  • Ensuring all wish and contact records are kept up to date

  • Implementation and review of wish audits

  • Responsibility for all finance processes within the services team and work with the Finance Manager to ensure accuracy of reporting and accounts.

  • Attend weekly and monthly wish meetings and hospital liaison meetings

  • To be responsible for ensuring best practice on all procedures

  • To maintain and update procedures

  • To ensure the Charity’s guidelines are adhered to and that all services meet the Charity’s agreed standards

  • To deal with any internal /external complaints that are directed at services team

  • Quarterly review of all wishes and services to ensure all are being completed within requires timescales

  • Manage relationships with key suppliers and actively reach out to new suppliers to reduce costs

  • Periodically review all wish granting processes to ensure efficiency

  • To action additional requests for information from RoS Staff members

  • Management of Safeguarding across the Charity.

  • Health and Safety manager for the Charity.

  • Keep CEO updated as and when required

    Service delivery responsibilities

  • To ensure wishes take place within a reasonable timescale and all aspects are properly organised by the office and volunteer teams.

  • To ensure the correct travel insurance is arranged and medical information is received on all foreign travel wishes

  • To monitor and ensure that all involved maintain contact with wish families during the lead up to and in the fulfilment of a wish

  • Implement best practice – supply clear guidelines

  • Monitor quality assurance

  • Increase gifts in Kind

  • Manage relationships with key stakeholders

  • Monitor feedback for all wishes

  • Ensure a professional code of conduct

  • Oversee, review and approve hospital ward wish requests

  • Oversee the delivery of hospital activity days

  • Oversee reporting of feedback from hospital activity days

  • Oversee the strategy and development of engagement opportunities, putting a framework in place in line with the strategic direction of the charity

  • Implement a framework to oversee feedback and impact of all services
